Woman sets herself, her 3-year-old son ablaze in Kapurthala village, both die
The woman and her son were rushed to a local hospital following the incident, but were declared brought dead.
Acting on the complaint of the deceased's family, police arrested her father-in-law and mother-in-law for abetting her suicide.
Kapurthala Sadar police station SHO Prabhjot Kaur said the woman got married five years ago. Her husband had been living in Dubai for the past two years, while she was living on the first floor of her in-laws's house.
The woman's family complained to police that she was subjected to constant mental and physical harassment by her in-laws due, driving her into depression.
On Thursday, neighbours noticed smoke emanating from the first floor of the house. The neighbours, along with the woman's in-laws, broke down the door and found her and her son ablaze, the SHO said.
They transported the duo to a local hospital, but they succumbed to their burn injuries, police said.
On the basis of the victim's family, police lodged an FIR under Sections 108 (abetment of suicide) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the BNS against the deceased's in-laws, and arrested her father-in-law and mother-in-law.

LUDHIANA: Sadar police on Tuesday arrested a man for abetment to suicide after his wife allegedly took her own life by consuming a poisonous substance at their home on 3 August. It is alleged that the woman was beaten and harassed by her husband following a family dispute, which drove her to the extreme step. The deceased has been identified as Poonam, 23, who was married to Jogendra, 24. The couple were residents of Mehmoodpura village and originally hailed from Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh . An FIR was registered under Section 108 (abetment to suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on the statement of Poonam's mother, Tarawati. According to ASI Jagtar Singh, the investigating officer, Poonam had married Jogendra, while her sister was married to Jogendra's brother. Poonam and Jogendra had been living in Ludhiana, while the other couple stayed in Uttar Pradesh. Recently, Jogendra's brother discovered that his wife was allegedly having an affair and decided to divorce her. Jogendra supported his brother's decision, but Poonam opposed it. This reportedly led to a dispute between the couple. It is alleged that Jogendra thrashed Poonam on 3 August, following which she consumed poison. She was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The police informed her parents, who live on Bahadurke Road. Based on their statements, police registered a case against Jogendra and arrested him. He works as a gardener and has two children from the marriage.

Youth arrested for impersonating Railway Police Officer (RPF) SI, intimidating locals in Varanasi
VARANASI: As part of the ongoing campaign to arrest wanted criminals, the Sigra police team on Tuesday arrested a youth who claimed to be an RPF SI, showing an ID card with the Indian Railway logo and his photo. A case was registered against him under sections 205, 319 (2), 318 (4) BNS. According to reports, while the Sigra police team led by Sanjay Mishra was conducting a check on suspicious persons and vehicles in Jawahar Nagar, they received information that a person in Nehru Market, wearing police boots and a holster with a pistol on his waist, was claiming to be a Railway Police officer and was intimidating shopkeepers and people. Acting on this information, the Sigra police team reached Nehru Market and saw a person wearing a white PT T-shirt, grey jeans, and police boots with a holster on his belt, in which a pistol was visible. The police caught him. Upon questioning, he identified himself as Amrit Ranjan, a resident of Bihiya, Bhojpur, Bihar. He claimed to be an RPF SI and showed an ID card with the Indian Railway logo and his photo. Finding this suspicious, he was interrogated strictly, and he admitted that he was not a policeman but was posing as one to intimidate people. When asked about the pistol on his waist, he said that it was a fake pistol he put on.

Man Allegedly Beaten To Death Over Rs 200 Loan Dispute In UP: Cops
Gonda: A 22-year-old newly-married man was allegedly beaten to death over a Rs 200 loan dispute, sparking protests from family members who placed his body on the Gonda-Lucknow highway, police said on Tuesday. The dead Hriday Lal, a mason from Laxmanpur Jaat village, had lent Rs 700 to a villager, Ram Anuj. A heated argument broke out between them on August 1 when Lal demanded Rs 200 back. The dispute turned violent, and he was allegedly attacked with sticks by Anuj, his brother Ram Kishore, son Jagdish, and nephews Pankaj and Chandan. Lal, who was taken to Lucknow for treatment, succumbed to injuries on Monday. When the body was being brought back from Lucknow in an ambulance on Monday evening, the family tried to block the Gonda-Lucknow highway at Balpur by keeping the body on the road. Police deployed from four local police stations intervened, cleared the blockade using mild force, and ensured the body was taken to the village. Initially, the family refused to conduct the last rites, demanding strict action and 'bulldozer action' on the homes of the accused. The cremation was eventually conducted late Monday night under police supervision, Kotwali Dehat Station House Officer, Sanjay Kumar Singh said, adding all named accused have been arrested and charged under relevant BNS sections. Postmortem was conducted in Lucknow, and further legal action will follow based on the report, he added. Police force has been deployed in the village to maintain peace. Lal had been married just a month ago, his family members said.
