PM Anwar offers condolences to family of Singapore's former First Lady
KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended condolences to the family of Singapore's former First Lady, Noor Aishah Mohammad Salim, who passed away today at the age of 91.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Anwar described her passing as deeply touching, noting her pivotal role in Singapore's early nation-building years. Noor Aishah was the widow of Yusof Ishak, Singapore's first President.
'Noor Aishah was more than just the companion to a national leader — she was an icon of loyalty and grace, a role model for women across the region. Her humility served as a bridge between leaders and the people,' he wrote.
As such, the Prime Minister said he, along with the people of Malaysia, extends heartfelt condolences to Noor Aishah's family.
'May her soul be blessed with Divine mercy and placed among the righteous,' he said.
According to a statement from the Singapore Prime Minister's Office, Noor Aishah passed away at 4.28 am today at the Singapore General Hospital.
She will be laid to rest on Tuesday at the Kranji State Cemetery, beside the grave of her late husband. — BERNAMA

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the exemption covers all institutions, including preschools, primary and secondary schools, vocational education centres, institutions of higher learning and general training institutes. Advertisement 'After receiving numerous views from (private) education and training institutions, the Madani Government has sought the best solution to train our young people. 'This (exemption) is intended to allow them to focus on improving quality,' he said when officiating at the highlight of the National Training Weeks (NTW) 2025 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium grounds, here, Saturday. Also present was Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. At the same time, the Prime Minister directed the Secretaries-General of the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma) to monitor and ensure that these training institutions offer quality training following the granting of the levy waiver. 'Also monitor private companies with high profits to ensure they give something back to their workers,' he added. Under the Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad Act 2001 (Act 612), employers are required to pay a levy to the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), an agency under the Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma), for training and skills development. Anwar also stressed the need to train the younger generation in new fields using current methods, in line with the Madani Economic Framework, and not remain stuck in outdated training approaches. He said these include areas such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and chip manufacturing. 'Malaysia's semiconductor industry is not small — the country is regarded as a hub and base for the Asean region. Nearly all of the world's largest semiconductor and AI companies are based in Malaysia,' he said. Meanwhile, Kesuma, in a statement, said the levy exemption amounts to RM46 million. Anwar pledges RM6m for national sepak takraw academy, hails youth as key to Malaysia's future
KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last night pledged his support for the establishment of a national sepak takraw academy by the end of this year, during the National Youth Day celebrations at Dataran Merdeka. He said Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh had requested RM6 million to develop the academy, and while acknowledging the sizeable amount, he said the government would try to allocate the funds, recognising the sport's potential to grow in popularity. 'Sepak takraw has gained great recognition, not just locally but internationally. Almost every village plays the sport, and it is deeply rooted in our culture. I support the proposal for a national academy and will ensure it becomes a reality,' said Anwar. Despite the steep funding request, he said the project would move forward soon. Anwar also reaffirmed the government's commitment to youth development through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), noting the increasing interest in the field with nearly 500,000 enrolled students and 140,000 new applicants this year alone. With major tech conglomerates such as Microsoft, Google, and Nvidia establishing operations in Malaysia, Anwar said these companies were drawn not only by strong government policies but also by the country's talented youth. 'These companies tell me our economy is stable, but the real reason they are here is because of our youth. Their work ethic and commitment are what attract investments,' he said to rapturous applause. He added that the Madani government is also taking steps to raise wages and ensure fair pay, especially for young workers in government-linked companies. 'We don't just talk — we act. Salary reforms, public responsibility schemes, and job creation efforts are all designed with youth in mind,' he said. In closing, Anwar reiterated the government's zero-tolerance policy on corruption and urged young people to stay vigilant against political manipulation and divisive rhetoric. The National Youth Day celebration is taking place at Dataran Merdeka until today.
