Miri MP: Opposition should be constructive, not obsessed with power
MIRI (July 25): The Opposition should play a more constructive role in Parliament, instead of constantly stirring political instability in their desperate bid to return to power, said Miri MP Chiew Choon Man.
In a statement, he criticised the planned 'Turun Anwar' rally set for tomorrow, calling it 'an irresponsible move, only reflecting the opposition's obsession with power'.
'After more than two years as the Opposition, they still fail to act like a responsible and functioning Opposition.
'They are not willing to wait for the next general election and are instead, trying to topple the government through backdoor means,' he said.
Chiew said that instead of offering policy alternatives or voicing important issues, the present Opposition continued to exploit racial and religious sentiments to divide the people.
'Even in Parliament, some of them never offered constructive ideas. When given the chance to raise local issues, they would often use the opportunity to blindly attack the government.'
According to Chiew, the Opposition had never presented any alternative budget despite several national budgets being tabled since the Unity Government took over.
He also pointed out the lack of a serious shadow cabinet.
'This shows they are not serious about improving the country. They are only interested in power for their own gain.'
Chiew further criticised the Opposition's track record when they were in power, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said the people had to raise white flags due to financial hardship, while the government at that time pushed for state elections despite health risks.
'Now that the Madani Government is focused on rebuilding the economy and solving past problems, the Opposition should support stability rather than create more unrest through rallies and slander.
'Democracy should be about healthy competition during the elections, not changing governments through manipulation.
'Let's move past political drama and work together for a more united, stable, and progressive Malaysia,' said Chiew. Chiew Choon Man constructive Miri MP opposition parliament

Air Kelantan to settle RM61 million electricity arrears to TNB in stages
KOTA BARU: The Kelantan government has acknowledged that Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (Air Kelantan) owes Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) RM61 million in outstanding electricity bills and will settle the amount in stages. State Infrastructure, Water and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Dr Izani Husin said the arrears were partly due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Movement Control Order, which hindered bill collection, coupled with some residents withholding payment during frequent water supply disruptions. "TNB has met with us to discuss possible solutions, but no agreement has been finalised. "We will discuss further to determine a repayment schedule. With Air Kelantan's improved management, we are confident the debt will be cleared according to the agreed timeline," he told reporters after the weekly state executive council meeting at Kompleks Kota Darulnaim today. He added that Air Kelantan had previously settled older electricity arrears according to schedule, but several districts were found to still have outstanding amounts. Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof revealed that Air Kelantan's arrears with TNB had reached about RM61 million as of June 30.
