Rosmah secures damages over TikTok black magic allegation

By: FMT Text Size: PETALING JAYA: The Kuala Lumpur High Court has ordered a TikTok user to pay Rosmah Mansor RM100,000 for defaming her by claiming she was involved in black magic and bomohs (shamans). Justice Ahmad Shahrir Salleh made the decision after the defendant, Ku Hilmie Ku Din, 35, failed to file a memorandum of appearance to respond to Rosmah's suit by the stipulated date. During the proceedings, held online via Zoom, Shahrir said the wife of former prime minister Najib Razak had successfully established her claim against Ku Hilmie, Berita Harian reported. The RM100,000 was for both general and aggravated damages, he said. 'The claim for exemplary damages is not allowed since there is no solid evidence to support such an award,' the judge added. Rosmah filed the lawsuit on Sept 19, 2023, seeking RM1 million in damages from the TikTok account holder for a loss of reputation over his claim. She claimed that the defendant had, six months earlier, uploaded a video on his TikTok account containing false and defamatory statements about her. The impugned statements accused her of committing sinful acts and being involved in rituals involving the devil and bomohs. They also accused her of practising polytheism. Rosmah said the statements damaged her reputation as the wife of Malaysia's sixth prime minister and a patron of various charitable organisations in the country. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, he said numerous complaints had been received regarding misconduct and illegal activities at several tourist locations, which could affect the industry's safety reputation. He recently led a joint inspection operation in Tawau involving his ministry's licensing and enforcement division, the Immigration Department, police, and other agencies. The two-day operation included checks on 30 tourist buses and vehicles, 15 tourism business premises, 40 boats, and four jetties, resulting in summonses for nine offences. Findings revealed that some companies, appearing locally owned, were operated by foreign investors, including those from China, and were involved in unlicensed activities such as operating water chalets, aquaculture, and homestays on agricultural or farming land. Tiong urged local authorities to take swift action against unlicensed operators and stressed that while foreign investment is welcome, it must comply fully with Malaysian laws and regulations. Police probe clash with protesters outside parliament
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have launched an investigation into a scuffle between demonstrators and officers during a protest at Jalan Parlimen today, after videos of the incident went viral on social media. Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said TikTok footage showed participants provoking and charging at law enforcement personnel who were on duty to maintain order during the memorandum submission. "One officer sustained injuries as a result of the clash and has received medical treatment," he said in a statement. An investigation has been opened under Sections 353 and 427 of the Penal Code for using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging duties, and for committing mischief resulting in damage to property. Fadil reiterated that the police uphold the public's constitutional right to assemble peacefully, but warned that firm action would be taken against anyone inciting unrest or engaging in excessive provocation.

Russia starts restricting some calls on Telegram and WhatsApp, Interfax says
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russian authorities are taking measures to restrict some calls on Telegram and WhatsApp, the messaging app owned by Meta Platforms, Russia's Interfax news agency cited Russia's communications regulator Roskomnadzor as saying on Wednesday. Meta and Telegram did not immediately respond to requests for comment. President Vladimir Putin last month signed a law authorizing the development of a state-backed messaging app integrated with government services, as Russia strives to reduce its dependence on platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram. Russia has long sought to establish what it calls digital sovereignty by promoting home-grown services. Its push to replace foreign tech platforms became more urgent as some Western companies pulled out of the Russian market after Moscow launched full-scale war in Ukraine. "In order to counteract are being taken to partially restrict calls on these foreign messengers," Interfax quoted Roskomnadzor as saying. "No other restrictions have been imposed on their functionality." Roskomnadzor said that the owners of both Telegram and WhatsApp had ignored repeated requests to take measures to stop their platforms being used for activities such as extortion and terrorism.
