Yunus changes tack on India's Northeast, calls for ‘plan for Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan & Seven Sisters'
'We are the only guardian of the ocean,' he had said at the time, inviting Chinese investment to Bangladesh, pitching it as a gateway to the region. He went further, suggesting that this geographical placement offered a 'huge possibility' for China and also asserted that the region could become 'an extension of the Chinese economy'.
He made the comments Monday during a meeting with Indira Rana, Deputy Speaker of Nepal's House of Representatives, currently in Dhaka to attend an event hosted by the Embassy of Nepal. 'There should be an integrated economic plan for Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and the Seven Sisters. We have more to gain together than apart,' Yunus was quoted as saying. This marks a notable shift from his earlier remarks in March during a visit to Beijing, where he described India's Northeast as 'landlocked'.
New Delhi: Following an earlier statement labelling India's Northeast as isolated and 'landlocked' in his investment pitch to China, Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus appears to have now changed tack—calling for a unified cross-border economic integration plan involving Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and the 'Seven Sisters' states in India.
'From Bangladesh, you can go anywhere you want. The ocean is our backyard,' Yunus declared.
Now, the chief adviser to the interim government in Dhaka is positioning the same geographical region as a potential corridor of shared prosperity, rooted in mutual interests and resource sharing.
He further hailed the Bangladesh-Nepal-India Tripartite Power Sales Agreement, signed in October last year, as a promising model for deeper energy integration. The agreement enables the transfer of 40 MW of Nepalese hydropower to Bangladesh via India.
His earlier remarks on the Northeast had drawn sharp criticism in India, given their geopolitical implications. India's Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, responded by reaffirming the strategic importance of the Northeast within regional frameworks, calling it a connectivity hub for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC)—a grouping that includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
Moreover, his remarks triggered outrage among Indian political leaders, particularly in the Northeast.
Following this, in what was seen as a direct rebuke, India's Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) canceled a 2020 transshipment agreement that allowed Bangladeshi goods to move through Indian territory en route to Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar.
'The transshipment facility extended to Bangladesh had over a period of time resulted in significant congestion at our airports and ports. Logistical delays and higher costs were hindering our own exports and creating backlogs' Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, had said at the time.
Further, at the BIMSTEC Summit held in Bangkok in April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged Yunus with only a brief handshake and used the summit to reinforce that India's Northeast is not a peripheral outpost but a central player in BIMSTEC's future.
Tensions escalated further following the Pahalgam terrorist attack, when ThePrint reported controversial comments by retired Bangladeshi Major General A.L.M. Fazlur Rahman. Rahman in a Facebook post suggested that in the event of a war between India and Pakistan, Bangladesh should seize the opportunity to capture India's Northeast with Chinese support.

Ladli Behna aid to be hiked on Rakshabandhan: CM
Bhopal: CM Mohan Yadav has announced that the monthly assistance under the Ladli Behna Yojana will be increased on the occasion of Rakshabandhan , with a long-term goal of raising it to Rs 3,000 over the next five years. At present, beneficiaries receive Rs 1,250 per month. Addressing a public gathering in Jabalpur district on Saturday, Yadav also announced a Rs 1,400 crore irrigation project, the Gomukh reservoir, which will benefit over 25,000 farmers across Jabalpur and Mandla districts. The project will bring irrigation to nearly 15,000 hectares in Jabalpur and 10,000 hectares in Mandla. He added that the tribal region is being gifted with institutions like the Sandipani School and the ITI, which shall play a transformative role in the lives of students and help shape a brighter future for them. Widespread outrage over derogatory remarks against Amaravati
Mangalagiri: A recent incident involving a channel analyst and journalist making highly derogatory remarks about Amaravati has sparked widespread outrage, with many alleging a well-organised conspiracy behind the comments. Public and official circles are urged to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The controversial statements, which targeted the capital region, its residents, particularly women, and the rich historical and Buddhist heritage of the area, cannot be dismissed as mere individual opinion. The channel, far from disassociating itself from the comments or condemning them during the discussion, allowed them to be aired without challenge. This inaction suggests a deliberate attempt to insult and ridicule Amaravati and its people with vile language, according to a statement from Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. The Deputy Chief Minister's statement highlights a concerning lack of historical awareness among those engaging in 'vile propaganda' against Amaravati. The region boasts a profound historical and spiritual significance, with inscriptions from the Maurya and Ikshvaku dynasties, and Kakatiya rulers. Chinese traveler Xuanzang's writings attest to the region's flourishing Buddhist heritage. 'This is the land where Acharya Nagarjuna walked,' the statement read, emphasising that Mahayana Buddhism, along with other traditions, thrived here, making it a sacred place for Buddhists. The Amaravati school of sculpture found patronage in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asian countries where Buddhism spread. 'Have those making such vile comments ever considered the sentiments of people who believe in these faiths?' the statement questioned. The statement further accuses previous rulers and their associates of consistently attempting to tarnish Amaravati's image through malicious remarks, likening the capital to a 'cremation ground' and branding it with casteist labels. Farmers who donated land for the capital were allegedly harassed with false cases and suppressed politically when they protested for the capital to remain. Notably, 32 per cent of the farmers who contributed land belong to SC and ST communities. The previous government is accused of filing SC/ST atrocity cases against these very farmers who were protesting for Amaravati to remain the capital. Additionally, 14 per cent were BC farmers, 20 per cent from the Reddy community, 18 per cent Kamma, 9 per cent Kapu, and 3 per cent Muslim farmers. The recent derogatory comments made on the TV channel are seen as an insult to all women in the capital region, irrespective of their caste or community (SC, ST, BC and others). 'The malicious intent of this group appears to be to cast a negative light on a region being developed as a people's capital,' the Deputy Chief Minister's statement concluded. It vowed that the State government will act decisively against individuals involved in such conspiracies and malicious propaganda, and those behind them. Police are expected to take legal action against those who made the vile remarks.
