Carnival faces another brawl; Royal Caribbean has slide accident
Unruly passenger behavior is becoming a common theme in the cruise industry.
Although people tend to point to Carnival Cruise Line anytime there's a report of cruise passengers behaving badly, Royal Caribbean has seen its fair share of altercations, too.
In today's world, the proof is often in the video posted on social media. And social media loves a fight. In April, Carnival Cruise Line received a lot of negative attention when a wild brawl broke out among 24 of its passengers in a Galveston cruise terminal.
Now, just days after an even bigger brawl broke out between vacationers at Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, another Carnival cruise passenger clash was caught on video at a Long Beach, Calif. terminal.
Although cruise lines make it clear that they won't hesitate to ban passengers for participating in physical altercations, these recent incidents are leading more cruisers to call for cruise lines to take it even further. Some cruisers think cruise lines should maintain a common, industry-wide 'Do Not Sail' list — meaning if you get banned from one cruise line, you're banned from all.
Doug Parker shared a clip of Carnival's latest cruise terminal brawl, as well as details on a scary slide accident that occurred on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, on the Aug. 8 edition of Cruise News Today.Royal Caribbean passenger injured as Icon of the Seas slide breaks
Cruise News Today Transcript:
This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker.
Good morning, here's your cruise news for Friday, August 8th.
A passenger on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas was injured on Thursday when part of the Frightening Bolt waterslide broke mid-ride.
Yeah, this footage here is scary — from Sunny Side Soul on Facebook — shows the aftermath of water pouring on the deck after the piece of the slide fell down.
Now a Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Cruise News Today, 'Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off the water slide as the guest passed through the slide.'It went on to say, 'the guest is being treated for his injuries. The water slide is closed for the remainder of the sailing pending an investigation.'
A witness on board told us that no one was in the area below when the piece of the slide fell. The cause of the break has not been confirmed.
The Frightening Bolt waterslide is located on deck 15 of Icon and is touted to be the tallest drop slide at sea, part of the Category 6 Waterpark.

Another cruise passenger fight breaks out at Carnival terminal
And a fight shockingly broke out at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal just before passengers started boarding the Carnival Firenze for a four-night sailing.
Video posted to social media from the X account @rororowyaboatz shows the scuffle just before entering the cruise terminal.
Now this isn't the first terminal fight. Carnival Jubilee guests got into it this past April after a seven-night western Caribbean cruise, leading to a few arrests.
This news follows a fight this past weekend at Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay where a wedding party got into it at the main lagoon.Let me ask you, should there be a universal 'Do Not Sail' list like the airlines have for flying? Let me know in the comments.
And the photo of the week comes from Andrew of the MSC Meraviglia in The Bahamas here. Great photo here, Andrew. You can send yours in photos@cruiseradio.net. All photos are subject to broadcast.

Astronaut Kellie Gerardi will be Star of the Seas godmother
ONBOARD THE STAR OF THE SEAS -- Royal Caribbean International CEO Michael Bayley said that commercial astronaut, tech professional and influencer Kellie Gerardi will replace Diana Ross as godmother of the line's second Icon-class ship. Speaking at a press briefing on the ship's preview sailing Aug. 15, Bayley recounted how disappointing it was that the superstar singer would be unable to be the godmother and how Royal landed on a replacement. Royal hit on what Bayley called a "brilliant" idea, considering the ship is called the Star of the Seas and it sails out of Port Canaveral on Florida's Space Coast. "Why don't we find ... someone who's been to space," Bayley said, "and can really embody what Royal Caribbean is doing in terms of adventure and excitement." Gerardi is the 90th woman in space, having served as payload specialist on a Virgin Galactic mission in 2023. She is scheduled to lead an all-female suborbital spaceflight for Virgin Galactic next year. In her Virgin Galactic bio, the company called her an "aerospace and technology professional, payload specialist and popular science communicator." She has a large following on social media, with 1.4 million followers on Instagram and nearly 1 million on TikTok. Royal Caribbean had announced Ross as godmother in June, but the line on Thursday said that she would be unable to fulfill the role. Bayley said the ship's christening would proceed as scheduled on Aug. 20. Before announcing Gerardi, Bayley joked that someone had suggested Sailor, the golden retriever that is the Star's Chief Dog Officer, be the godmother. "I thought that was a great idea, but I was on my own," said Bayley.

Puerto Rico cashes in on Bad Bunny as thousands flock to the island for his concerts
VEGA BAJA, Puerto Rico — Tourists slipped into borrowed red polyester vests from the Puerto Rico supermarket where Bad Bunny once worked, grinning as they posed for photographs in the superstar's old uniform. They listened intently as his former boss recalled how he loved classic salsa songs. 'He always liked going to the parking lot to gather the shopping carts because it seemed that he felt free there and would sing,' said Delza Vélez, the head of HR at Econo, the supermarket.
