IsDBI announces winners of AI hackathon for Islamic finance
The Islamic Development Bank Institute (IsDBI) has announced the winners of the first-of-its-kind Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hackathon in Islamic Finance, organized to showcase the potential of AI-powered tools to support the progress of the global Islamic financial industry.

The awards were announced and presented to the winners during the 19th IsDB Global Forum on Islamic Finance on 20 May 2025 in Algiers, Algeria, on the sidelines of the IsDB Group Annual Meetings.
As the Islamic finance industry evolves to meet the demands of a dynamic global economy, the practical adoption and harmonization of Financial Accounting Standards (FAS) - particularly across jurisdictions - remains a challenge. At the same time, Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing how financial services are designed, delivered, and governed.
Recognizing this opportunity, IsDBI launched the AI Hackathon to explore how emerging technologies can strengthen the adoption of Islamic finance standards, particularly those issued by the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI). The Hackathon focused on developing AI-powered solutions that make these standards easier to implement, more accessible, and globally aligned.
Dr. Sami Al-Suwailem, Acting Director General of IsDBI, presented the awards to the top three winners, namely:
• First Place - Khilan Team
• Second Place - Al Buraq Team
• Third Place - BANKAI Team
The winning projects stood out for their technical excellence, creative design, and potential for real-world application in the Islamic finance ecosystem.
In his comment on this occasion, Dr. Sami Al-Suwailem, stated: "This Hackathon reflects our commitment to advancing the Islamic financial industry using state-of-the-art technologies. We are proud to support the next generation of thinkers and builders shaping the future of Islamic finance through AI."
The Hackathon is a pioneering initiative dedicated to applying AI in solving key challenges in Islamic financial services. It highlighted the role of AI in enhancing standardization, compliance, and innovation in the US$4+ trillion Islamic finance industry. The competition brought together talented students, developers, researchers, and entrepreneurs from around the world to co-create practical, Shariah-compliant digital solutions.

France's Eramet says it will work with Gabon despite manganese export ban
PARIS, June 2 (Reuters) - French miner Eramet ( opens new tab, the main shareholder in Gabon-based manganese mining firm Comilog, said it will aim to safeguard the 10,460 Gabonese jobs sustained by Comilog and Comilog railway transport unit Setrag, despite Gabon's announcement of an export ban on manganese starting in 2029. Eramet said it "takes note of the Gabonese government's intention to ban crude manganese exports from January 1st, 2029. This move is described as part of the country's stated ambition to strengthen its industrial base, initiated by H.E. President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema and his Government". It said it acknowledged the government's move and, as the main co-shareholder in Comilog, will continue to work with the authorities "in a spirit of constructive partnership and mutual respect". In August 2023, Eramet temporarily halted manganese mining operation following a military coup that ended 56 years of rule by former President Ali Bongo. In April 2025, Gabon's Constitutional Court confirmed that coup leader Brice Oligui Nguema won the oil-rich Central African nation's presidential election. In October 2024, Eramet sharply cut 2024 production targets for its manganese mine in Gabon - the world's biggest - citing a downturn in the manganese market. Eramet's Comilog subsidiary processes some manganese, which is mainly used to produce carbon steel, locally in Gabon but mostly exports its mine production as ore.

South African rand gains before manufacturing PMI, vehicle sales data
JOHANNESBURG, June 2 (Reuters) - The South African rand gained some ground against a weaker dollar in early trade on Monday, ahead of a purchasing managers' index (PMI) survey for the domestic manufacturing sector and vehicle sales figures. At 0602 GMT, the rand traded at 17.9475 against the dollar , about 0.2% firmer than Friday's closing level. The Absa PMI for May is set to be released at 0900 GMT and will shed light on manufacturing conditions in Africa's most industrialised economy. Local investors will then turn their focus to vehicle sales (ZAVEHY=ECI), opens new tab data due around 1200 GMT, giving a snapshot of consumer demand for big-ticket items. Nedbank economists said they expect annual growth in new vehicle sales to have accelerated from 11.9% in April to 20.4% in May, reflecting last year's low base and easing financial conditions due to interest rate cuts. The dollar last traded about 0.2% weaker against a basket of currencies as U.S.-China trade tensions continued to simmer and investors turned defensive ahead of U.S. jobs data. South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond was little changed in early deals, with the yield up 0.5 basis points at 10.16%.
