Stefanik lights into Hochul on migrant crime in New York during fiery exchange
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), in a contentious exchange during a House Oversight Committee hearing Thursday, slammed New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) over recent crimes committed by undocumented migrants in the state.
Stefanik invoked an executive order immigration signed by Hochul, along with a number of recent crimes committed by those who were in the country without authorization, including the burning of a woman on the New York City subway last year.
'This is Kathy Hochul's New York. It's one of the many reasons why you're hemorrhaging support from hardworking New York families,' Stefanik said. 'They're horrific crimes that are committed on your watch. You signed this executive order on your first day in office. You signed it again and again this January.'
'We deserved a governor who stands up for New Yorkers, who doesn't put illegals first but actually puts New Yorkers first,' she continued.
The exchange took place at the Oversight Committee hearing on sanctuary states on Thursday, featuring Hochul, along with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D).
Stefanik several times spoke over Hochul during the fiery back-and-forth as the New York governor struggled to recall specifics of the cases but repeatedly told Stefanik she condemns the 'horrific' crimes Stefanik cited.
She said New York cooperates with Immigration Customs Enforcement.
'Rather than you going after the viral moment, I suggest you look at the facts,' Hochul responded.'No, no, no. I'm standing up for New Yorkers.'
Most scientific research on the connection between immigration and crime has found that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than their U.S.-born peers.
Stefanik, who is not on the Oversight Committee but appeared on the dais at the hearing as a member of House GOP leadership, is considering a run for New York governor.
Hochul is facing a potentially tough reelection bid in New York next year, four years after she won election in the blue state by single digits.
A Siena College poll released last month showed 55 percent of New York voters said they want 'someone else' in next year's gubernatorial race, while 36 percent said they prefer Hochul, marking a shift of negative 10 points since the same poll last month.

Judge blocks plan to allow immigration agents in New York City jail
NEW YORK -- A judge blocked New York City's mayor from letting federal immigration authorities reopen an office at the city's main jail, in part because of concerns the mayor invited them back in as part of a deal with the Trump administration to end his corruption case. New York Judge Mary Rosado's decision Friday is a setback for Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, who issued an executive order permitting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies to maintain office space at the Rikers Island jail complex. City lawmakers filed a lawsuit in April accusing Adams of entering into a 'corrupt quid pro quo bargain' with the Trump administration in exchange for the U.S. Justice Department dropping criminal charges against him. Rosado temporarily blocked the executive order in April. In granting a preliminary injunction, she said city council members have 'shown a likelihood of success in demonstrating, at minimum, the appearance of a quid pro quo whereby Mayor Adams publicly agreed to bring Immigration and Customs Enforcement ('ICE') back to Rikers Island in exchange for dismissal of his criminal charges.' Rosado cited a number of factors, including U.S. border czar Tom Homan's televised comments in February that if Adams did not come through, "I'll be in his office, up his butt saying, 'Where the hell is the agreement we came to?' ' Adams has repeatedly denied making a deal with the administration over the criminal case. He has said he deputized his first deputy mayor, Randy Mastro, to handle decision-making on the return of ICE to Rikers Island to make sure there was no appearance of any conflict of interest. Rosado said that Mastro reports to Adams and 'cannot be considered impartial and free from Mayor Adams' conflicts.' Mastro said in a prepared statement Friday the administration was confident they will prevail in the case. "Let's be crystal clear: This executive order is about the criminal prosecution of violent transnational gangs committing crimes in our city. Our administration has never, and will never, do anything to jeopardize the safety of law-abiding immigrants, and this executive order ensures their safety as well," Mastro said. City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, who is running in the Democratic primary for mayor, called the decision a victory for public safety. 'New Yorkers are counting on our city to protect their civil rights, and yet, Mayor Adams has attempted to betray this obligation by handing power over our city to Trump's ICE because he is compromised," she said in a prepared statement.

Tucker Carlson slams ‘warmongers' Sean Hannity, Rupert Murdoch amid Israel-Iran strikes
Political pundit Tucker Carlson doubled down on his criticism of Israel's strikes against Iran, rebuking several media figures, including his former colleagues at Fox News, over what he described as their push for President Trump to engage in the region. 'Who are the warmongers? They would include anyone who's calling Donald Trump today to demand air strikes and other direct US military involvement in a war with Iran,' Carlson wrote in a post on the social media platform X. 'On that list: Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Rupert Murdoch, Ike Perlmutter and Miriam Adelson. At some point they will all have to answer for this, but you should know their names now,' he continued. Hannity and Levin both work for Fox News, which is owned by Murdoch. Politco reported earlier this week that Levin ramped up his criticism of Iran alongside GOP insiders, including Perlmutter, who urged Trump to support Israel's attack during a private lunch at the White House. On Friday, Levin responded to Carlson, denying that he advised Trump to 'bomb' Iran. 'You're a reckless and deceitful propagandist, and that's the best I can say,' he wrote on X. 'You promote antisemitism and conspiracy nuts.' Iran lost three top military leaders, six nuclear scientists and dozens of senior commanders as a result of Israel's attack on their nation late Thursday. Iran responded with a round of ballistic missiles sent toward Israel after Trump said the U.S. would increase the pressure on Iran if a nuclear deal wasn't soon reached. 'There has already been great death and destruction, but there is still time to make this slaughter, with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal, come to an end…,' Trump posted on Truth Social. 'I told them it would be much worse than anything they know, anticipated, or were told, that the United States makes the best and most lethal military equipment anywhere in the World, BY FAR, and that Israel has a lot of it, with much more to come — And they know how to use it,' he continued. In recent weeks, Carlson alongside Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, have warned of the threat of nuclear warfare. 'While the American military may not have physically perpetrated the assault, years of funding and sending weapons to Israel, which Donald Trump just bragged about on Truth Social, undeniably place the U.S. at the center of last night's event,' Carlson wrote earlier in the day. 'Washington knew these attacks would happen. They aided Israel in carrying them out. Politicians purporting to be America First can't now credibly turn around and say they had nothing to do with it.
