The midfielder collapsed in pain and received treatment from physios, with fan fearing he had injured his anterior crucial ligament.
Those fans have now been realised and Maddison will undergo surgery on his right knee.
Recovery from the operation will keep the England star out for months and he is at risk of missing the entire season.
Spurs boss Thomas Frank confirmed after the match it was a "bad injury".
Maddison, 28, subsequently underwent tests on his knee after returning from Asia.

Arne Slot says Liverpool ‘need to be better' after Community Shield defeat
After his Liverpool team lost the Community Shield in a penalty shootout to Crystal Palace, their manager, Arne Slot admitted the difficulty of bedding in the summer's new signings. August 11 - Philadelphia Eagles guard Landon Dickerson was carted off the field with a leg injury during Sunday night's open practice. Dickerson was listed on the injury report on Saturday with a knee injury. He was not listed on the report on Sunday. Dickerson was injured on a pass play and remained down on the field for several minutes. He was unable to put any weight on the right leg. Dickerson was a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
