Sri Lanka seizes largest cocaine haul at main airport
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's customs authorities arrested on Friday (May 30) a woman and seized the largest haul of cocaine ever detected at the country's main international airport, an official said.
The unnamed 38-year-old Thai woman was carrying nearly 10kg of cocaine stuffed into three soft toys, Customs Additional Director-General Seevali Arukgoda said.
"This is the biggest attempt at cocaine smuggling stopped by Sri Lanka Customs at the airport," Arukgoda said in a statement.
Customs officials at Bandaranaike International Airport posed for photos with the cocaine, which had been neatly stuffed into just over 500 plastic capsules, with an estimated street value of US$1.72 million.
The seizure follows three other hauls this month totalling nearly 60kg of synthetic cannabis.
Three foreign nationals – from Britain, India, and Thailand – were arrested in separate cases.
The Briton, identified as Charlotte May Lee, 21, a former cabin crew member from London, was produced before a magistrate on Friday and further remanded until June 13, court officials said.
She was arrested on May 12 when officials discovered that her two suitcases were packed with 46kg of kush, a synthetic drug.
All four suspects, including the Thai woman arrested on Friday, could face life imprisonment if convicted.
Sri Lankan authorities have previously seized large quantities of heroin off the country's shores, suggesting the island is being used as a transit hub for narcotics destined for other locations.
In October, a Sri Lankan court sentenced 10 Iranian men to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to smuggling more than 111kg of heroin. In 2023, nine Iranians received life sentences in a separate drug smuggling case.
Sri Lanka's largest single seizure of narcotics occurred in December 2016, when Customs found 800kg of cocaine in a transhipment container of timber addressed to a company in neighbouring India.

FBI announces new probes into Dobbs Supreme Court leak, White House cocaine incident
WASHINGTON: The FBI will launch new probes into the 2023 discovery of cocaine at the White House during President Joe Biden's term and the 2022 leak of the Supreme Court's draft opinion overturning Roe v Wade, a top official announced on Monday (May 26). Dan Bongino, a rightwing podcaster-turned-FBI deputy director, made the announcement on X, where he said he had requested weekly briefings on the cases' progress. Both incidents have been popular talking points on America's right. The discovery of a small bag of cocaine in a cubby near the entrance to the West Wing two years ago drew excited commentary from Republicans, including then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who said it was implausible the drugs could belong to anyone beyond Biden and his son Hunter - even though the Biden family was away from Washington at the time. A White House spokesperson said then that the allegations were "incredibly irresponsible." The publication of the Supreme Court's opinion ending the constitutional right to abortion in Politico on May 2, 2022, provoked condemnation from Trump, who called the source of the leak "slime" and demanded that the journalists involved be imprisoned until they revealed who it was. Indonesia seizes two tons of methamphetamine in its biggest ever bust
JAKARTA: Indonesian authorities seized about two tons of methamphetamine off Sumatra island in the biggest seizure of drugs in the country's history, its narcotics agency said on Monday (May 26). The agency linked the drugs to a syndicate in the Golden Triangle - an area where northeastern Myanmar meets parts of Thailand and Laos, which has a long history of producing drugs for distribution as far as Japan and New Zealand. Marthinus Hukom, chief of Indonesia's narcotics agency, told reporters that after five months of surveillance authorities last week sent ships to stop a vessel called "Sea Dragon Tarawa" and discovered the methamphetamine in boxes. Hukom said the drugs were thought to have come from a syndicate in the Golden Triangle and were destined for Indonesia as well as other Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia and the Philippines. Four Indonesians and two Thai nationals were apprehended on the ship, he said. "This seizure is the biggest drug discovery in the history of drug eradication in Indonesia," he said. The latest seizure comes after Indonesia's navy seized a ship carrying nearly two tons of methamphetamine and cocaine worth US$425 million around the same area in the west of the archipelago earlier this month. One Thai national and four Myanmar nationals were also detained. A record 190 tons of methamphetamine was seized in East and Southeast Asia in 2023 as organised crime groups exploited weak law enforcement to traffic drugs, mainly via the Gulf of Thailand, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime said in a 2024 report.
