Controversial new five-star Gold Coast hotel set to open

The much anticipated Mondrian Gold Coast is finally about to open – two years after its target date.
But anticipation can be a double-edged sword: there's excitement at the arrival of a new five-star hotel that marks the entry of a prestige hospitality brand into not just the Queensland market, but Australia's. And then there's trepidation from locals, who have expressed their concern over the development that the hotel inhabits, a harbinger of the high-rise change happening in Burleigh Heads.
Mondrian Gold Coast is half of a two-tower development that rises to 25 storeys – the other half being a luxury residential apartment complex. It takes up 80 metres of Burleigh beachfront formerly occupied by three older-style unit blocks.
The 'points of difference' Mondrian Gold Coast offers include 208 rooms claimed to be twice the size of the average hotel room in Australia, alongside 132 studios, 76 suites, private beach houses, and the 'Sky House' presidential suite.
The hotel will feature an all-day Italian restaurant, a lobby bar, seafood restaurant, and pool club overlooking Burleigh Beach.
Of course, there's also the Mondrian name. Now managed by Ennismore, a subsidiary of the giant Accor hotel and resort group, its legacy is pure rock 'n roll.
In 1985, a nine-storey 1950s apartment complex on West Hollywood's Sunset Strip was converted to a hotel, and the legend was born.

Well-known siblings open Italian venue at popular foreshore

Tonight marks a triumphant return for the Humzy family to Rockingham foreshore, with the opening of Italian restaurant Rocco. The Humzy siblings Hisham, Ben and Rana are well-known in Rockingham and have already received strong support and positive feedback ahead of their comeback to the local dining scene. 'We're already at complete capacity for opening night,' oldest sibling Hisham said. 'But we're good at what we do and we like being thrown into the deep end, so we're very excited for the doors to open.' Taking back their original location on Rockingham Beach Road, the family-style upscale restaurant returns to where Hisham first opened Lavoro Italian before selling it in 2022. Hisham said when he started Lavoro 10 years ago, the menu was very westernised because people didn't understand authentic Italian food. Nowadays, he said Rockingham diners had a far better palate and widened their horizons, which they were excited to cater for at the new restaurant. 'We've gone down a much more authentic route for the menu. All of our ingredients are sourced locally or imported straight from Italy,' he said. 'It's the best feeling ever to be back in this spot again and I can't wait to show the locals what we've done with it.' Middle child Ben has worked alongside head chef Stefano Ragusa to curate a menu of old-school Italian soul food with upscale twists. The pair said they couldn't pick out what they were most excited for patrons to experience during the opening. 'I think the whole show just perfectly complements each other,' Ragusa said. The interior's renovation process took three months to complete and was designed by Rana Humzy. With one of Australia's largest fully wood-fired pizza ovens on show at Rocco's open concept kitchen, Hisham said the chefs will have nowhere to hide from patrons — which was just fine. 'Not many people do an open kitchen nowadays but that's the confidence level we've aimed for,' he said. 'We want to give our customers that sense of familiarity with whoever is cooking their food and make dining here a real experience.' Youngest sibling Rana is behind the restyled restaurant interior, which she says is all about a warm and inviting atmosphere with a family appeal. 'I think what's been most fulfilling about all of this, and the reason why we've poured our hearts and souls into this place, is because of the love our family has received from the community— it's been unbelievable and I really hope we don't disappoint,' Rana said. 'We won't,' Hisham interjected.

Six delicious getaways and food events worth travelling for

Carnival Corporation's cruise brands have long championed the 'Chef's Table'; an intimate, multi-course dining experience, often hosted by the ship's executive chef. Now Carnival's Holland America line is upping the ante with the launch of the Koningstafel, or 'King's Table'. Starting with a cocktail reception, the experience combines a behind-the-scenes galley tour with a wine-matched feast, with dishes including butter-poached lobster and herb-roasted lamb loin – all for a supplementary fee of $149 per person. Available on select ships, with a full-fleet rollout slated for 2026. See A taste of Italo-Australian history at the Finger Wharf Ovolo Woolloomooloo is honouring the area's heritage with a new Italian-inspired high tea, Dolce & Mare (sweet and sea). The menu pays homage to the Italian immigrants who settled in and around the suburb after World War I, with many turning to the maritime industry for work, so expect savoury bites like mini-lobster rolls and nonna-approved desserts including limoncello ricotta cake. The high tea runs Thursday to Saturday, with a choice of bottomless tea ($89pp), a glass of prosecco ($99pp) or a glass of champagne ($118pp). The menu marks a quiet shift away from Ovolo Hotels' plant-based 'Veg Pledge' across Australian properties, with the exception of Lona Misa restaurant at Ovolo South Yarra, helmed by pioneering vegan chef Shannon Martinez.
