Shreyas Iyer won't be blamed for breaking TV sets, glass bottles after Asia Cup snub: Wait for how long, Ajit Agarkar?

Hindustan Times13 hours ago
A Rage Room is a private space where aggrieved individuals can express their frustrations in a liberatingly physical manner. Draped in protective equipment, they are presented with a curated line-up of breakable items – glass bottles, old television sets, ceramics – that they can smash to smithereens to let off steam. Had Shreyas Iyer sought out a Rage Room on Tuesday, he would have been perfectly entitled to do so. Shreyas Iyer was not picked for India's Asia Cup squad
Shreyas had good cause to believe he'd be back in India's Twenty20 plans when the national selectors met in Mumbai to pick the 15-member squad for the Asia Cup, in the desert sands of the Emirates next month. With six months to India's defence of the World Cup grabbed spectacularly in Bridgetown in June last year, the process of fine-tuning preparations for the big bash begins with the continental showdown. Shreyas must have felt the volume of work he had put in, especially during IPL 2025, was sufficient for him to return to the T20I scheme of things for the first time since December 2023 (when he played the last of his 51 games), but Ajit Agarkar and his fellow wise men deigned otherwise.
There were numerous compelling reasons for Shreyas' inclusion: 604 delightful runs while leading Punjab Kings to the final in this year's IPL, at an average of 50.33 and a fabulous strike-rate of 175.07, easily the best among the ten highest run-getters (Shreyas sat at No. 6). His experience and expertise against the turning ball on the same surfaces where his middle-order composure and nous were pivotal to India's success in the 50-over Champions Trophy in February-March. His recent emergence as an accomplished player of the short ball, which had troubled him no end until a year and a bit back. His ability to take the fight to the bowlers from the off, a character trait T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir are strong advocates of. His tactical awareness and leadership bucket that Suryakumar could have dipped into in a tight corner. His electric agility and excellent fielding, anywhere on the park. And yet, here is Shreyas, not only missing from the 15-man party but also omitted from the reserves.
Have you hit the Rage Room yet, Shreyas?
Agarkar was, inevitably, questioned about the 30-year-old's continued non-inclusion. 'It's unfortunate that he misses out,' the former India pacer replied. 'It's no fault of his, neither ours. He has to wait for his chance.'
Wait for how long, Ajit? How much Iyer (pardon the terrible pun) must Shreyas go to warrant a T20 comeback?
India's desire to back multi-skilled players and to strike a balance between left- and right-handed batters isn't a secret, which is perhaps why Rinku Singh (in the 15) and Riyan Parag (in the reserves) have stolen a march over Shreyas, pretty much a specialist batter like Suryakumar and his deputy Shubman Gill. Whether Rinku's left-handedness (and very occasional off-spin) and/or Parag's admittedly decent assortment of spin are worth more than Shreyas' class and quality can be up for debate but in the eyes of those that matter, they certainly seem to be for now.
Even though he has been playing senior representative cricket for more than a decade, Shreyas is still only 30 and should by no means be staring at a premature end to his international T20 career. After the Asia Cup, India will play 15 guaranteed matches leading into the World Cup to be jointly staged in India and Sri Lanka in February-March. Those three five-match faceoffs – at home against South Africa and New Zealand, which will sandwich a showdown in Australia in the winter – will be used to allow the chosen ones to settle into their roles and put role clarity to optimal use. Barring the unforeseen (or the miraculous, if you are Shreyas), it is hard to see him being reintegrated with the T20 set-up in the immediate future, which is a big shame because he has so much to offer the Indian team now that he has become a more rounded all-format batter.
Perhaps one of the factors that worked against Shreyas is that he is at his best at Nos. 3 and 4, currently locked in by Suryakumar and Tilak Varma (in whichever order). Hardik Pandya or Axar Patel at No. 5 are game-breakers and India have further firepower in the form of Jitesh Sharma and Shivam Dube, which means a lot of rejig would have had to be undertaken to accommodate Shreyas, no matter how impressive his recent numbers might be. The persistence with those who have done the job in the last 12 months is commendable, but when an exception has been made for Test captain Gill, it begs the question whether that same privilege couldn't have been extended to Shreyas as well.

" Sochke Mooh Kholna": Jasprit Bumrah's Critics Sent Clear Message After "We Lost vs England When He Played" Remark

Jasprit Bumrah, despite being the best bowler of the current generation, came under criticism after he missed two out of five matches against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy despite being fit. Following India's Asia Cup squad announcement, ex-Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif welcomed pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's return to the T20I set-up following a mixed outing in England where he struggled with fitness in the fourth Manchester Test, telling his critics to "open their mouths carefully" on the "promising diamond of India". Bumrah will be returning to the T20I set-up after over a year of heavy red-ball grind, which saw him also feature in tours to Australia and England. Following a record-breaking tour to Australia with 32 wickets, Bumrah took 14 wickets in three matches during the England tour, including two five-wicket hauls, but his lack of success with the new ball throughout the series and fitness issues during the fourth Manchester Test raised questions over his workload once again and whether he would play the Asia Cup for India in T20I format. Speaking about the pace spearhead's return, Kaif pointed out how Bumrah's critics pointed out that whenever he played a Test during the recently concluded England tour, India did not win. "Sochke mooh kholna (Open your mouth carefully) because you mentioned that whatever matches we played in England, we lost when he played. You better look at how many matches he has played and India won them, go and find out that as well, regardless of the format. When he plays, how many times does he give match-winning performances? Go and find that stat as well. Bumrah is a promising diamond of India. You do not report him. There are no stains on him," he said on his YouTube channel. Kaif said that as he had said in one of his previous videos, Bumrah could not be seen playing Tests for too long after his recent injury struggles, he could play white-ball games as the workload would be lesser and recovery time would be good enough too, especially if he gets rest during matches against smaller teams like Oman, UAE. "I already said that Bumrah might not be seen playing long in Tests, but in white-ball cricket, if India comes in the Asia Cup final, then he might play seven games. He will bowl 28 overs (four overs per match), and I am speaking about a two or three-week-long tournament. There is no problem in bowling 28 overs; he will get time to recover. You can rest him in one odd match against Oman or weaker teams. After workload management and a break, he will be used. I think he would not face any issues in bowling four overs. You need Bumrah in T20 because he can change the course of the game with his bowling," he added. Kaif, however, was disappointed with no Mohammed Siraj in the team sheet, saying that he will be missed because of his form, having emerged as the leading wicket-taker during the England tour with 23 scalps in five matches and bowling lengthy spells in each game. "There is no Mohammed Siraj as well, and he will be missed because of the form he was in, the way he bowled in England, bowled longer spells in each game. By bowling that much, you have the bowling form. He plays IPL and picked up wickets as well. If you see, he is bowling exceedingly well in the first 10-12 matches. So, I am surprised he was not in the 20-member side," he said. "I am disappointed because he finished the series 2-2 on his own. We know how well he bowled, and when you have the form, you want to back that bowler, and that is why I am disappointed not to see him in the Asia Cup. He is an equally brilliant bowler even in white-ball cricket," he added. During IPL 2025 for the Gujarat Titans (GT), he took 16 wickets in 15 matches at an average of 32.93, with best figures of 4/17. For India, he has taken 14 wickets in 16 T20Is at an average of 32.28, with best figures of 4/17. His last T20I for India came against Sri Lanka in July last year. India will kick off their campaign against the UAE on September 10, while the high-voltage game against Pakistan is scheduled for September 14, with both fixtures set to be played in Dubai. India will play their final group stage fixture against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. After the group stage, the tournament will proceed to the Super 4, where the top two teams from each group will qualify. If India finishes at the top of Group A, then all of their Super 4 matches will be held in Dubai. If India finishes second, then one of their Super 4 clashes will be held in Abu Dhabi and the remaining two in Dubai. The Super 4 stage will run from September 20 to 26. Dubai will host the final, which is scheduled for September 28.

Is BCCI above national interest? Aaditya on proposed India-Pak match in Asia Cup

Agency: Mumbai, Aug 20 (PTI) Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Wednesday wrote to Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya against a proposed match between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup and asked whether the BCCI is above the national interest. The letter said many nations have been isolated in sports over a cause that is for the greater good of humanity. Terrorism is one such cause that prevents either of our nations from progressing peacefully. In the past decade, time and again, the country and its citizens have faced terrorist attacks based out of Pakistan, and the Union Government has reiterated it constantly, Thackeray stated. Recently, the Prime Minister also said water and blood cannot flow together from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Yet, only because of BCCI's insistence and desire for the money and ad revenue, probably, it holds the 'sindoor", and lives of our jawans as negligible, he said. 'Yet, sadly enough, and shamelessly, the BCCI is sending a team to play Pakistan in the Asia Cup. Is the BCCI above national interest? Is it above the sacrifice of our Jawans? Is it above the Sindoor of those who faced the attack in Pahalgham?" Thackeray said. 'We sent out delegations to the world, saying Pakistan is behind Pahalgam. Now, will we send out delegations to the world to justify why we are playing cricket with them?" Thackeray asked. It is truly a shameful act, when Pakistan has backed out of playing hockey in India, citing security reasons, that the BCCI plays Pakistan for selfish interest, the former Maharashtra minister said. The two marquee India versus Pakistan games will be held in Dubai during the upcoming Asia Cup, which is scheduled to start in the UAE from September 9. India and Pakistan will square off on September 14 in Dubai and one more time, potentially on September 21, at the same venue. The final on September 29 will also be held in Dubai. The tournament will be held in T20I format, keeping in mind the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
