Interview with Justin Sebastian of #100DaysofSpaces

Justin Sebastian, 31, an architectural and interior design photographer from Kochi in Kerala has been fielding innumerable calls from architects, interior specialists, design students and homeowners thanks to #100DaysofSpaces. This is an Instagram series that he began in February, a disciplined photographic study of India's diverse architecture through 100 projects.
Sebastian is on project no.64 now, his initial plan to complete the series in 100 days having been updated to include work commitments. The commerce graduate started his journey in photography at the Light and Life Academy in Lovedale, Ooty, in 2016. With a keen eye for light, form, and texture, his photography goes beyond traditional documentation, offering a poetic interpretation of spaces. His work spans residential, commercial, and public architecture, showcasing both contemporary designs and traditional elements.
With the many projects he has worked on and his eye for lines, light and shadows, it's no wonder he has a long list of collaborators. Constantly on the move with his trusted Nikon equipment — his favourite is a Nikon Z7II paired with a 24-70mm lens — the photographer took some time off to share a few insights. Brutalist architecture is seeing a revival, he says, referring to the style characterised by raw, exposed concrete and geometric shapes. More from him:
Question: How established was architectural photography during your initial days?
Answer: In 2016, though architectural photography was well-established, a specialisation in architecture and interior photography was not widespread. While other photography genres were prominent, there were very few contemporaries in this field with expertise in post-production and other technical aspects. However, the scenario shifted after the [COVID-19] pandemic. There was a notable surge in this field, with even architects turning to architectural photography. With the promise of substantial payment, rise in creative experiments by architects, and the evolving preferences of customers, the creative horizons of photography have also widened.
Q: What is the objective behind #100DaysofSpaces?
A: #100DaysofSpaces (@justin_sebastian_photography) was a challenge undertaken to document 100 unique projects in 100 days. I have given myself a deadline to complete this by August. The response has been 'insane' and I have recently expanded to include UAE projects too.
Q: What are the building features or materials used in these projects that get your attention?
A: There is a growing emphasis on sustainability and biophilic design — not just in homes but in commercial spaces too — integrating natural elements, thereby prioritising wellness, even in cities like Hyderabad and Bengaluru, as well as in semi-urban areas. Designers are experimenting with ventilation and large windows to maximise the use of daylight in accordance with the geographical conditions of the site. Also, there is an increase in the use of textured plasters, natural stones, exposed brickwork, and jaali designs. An example of this can be notably seen in The Kenz House project by Srijit Srinivas Architects, an award-winning architectural studio [in Thiruvananthapuram]. It is a net-zero energy home wrapped in exposed burnt brick with lattice perforations, giving a spacious feel. Another recent significant trend is brutalist architecture [as seen in Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation — a revolutionary 1952 apartment block in France — and the IIT Delhi's buildings].
Q: Could you share some unusual moments on the job?
A: About 90% of the projects I've worked with are biophilic spaces. What fascinated me the most was the session for [Gurugram-based] Saka Studio's project, Varadarajan House — a residence nestled in the picturesque landscape of Coorg. After heavy rain that lasted for an hour in the evening, an inexplicable, magical light touched the landscape and blended well with the earthy tones of the house. The antique furniture, accessories, and deep terracotta laterite added to the aesthetic. Another memorable shoot was for Malpe Beach House in Karnataka, designed by [Bengaluru-based] Thomas Parambil Architects, set amidst a river and the Arabian Sea. It was another phenomenal experience.
Q: What colour schemes or materials do you see becoming common in contemporary homes?
A: The use of terracotta, muted greens, beige, and off-white is widely popular these days, along with materials such as natural stone, cane, wood, and rattan. Clients prefer warm tones over flashy colours. Realistic tones and matte finishes are in demand. The firm Workers of Art [in Kochi], which uses recycled and repurposed materials in almost all aspects of its design, mostly incorporates pop-out colours and brutalist designs. It's exciting because people are no longer limiting themselves; they're willing to break all conventional patterns of how spaces are supposed to look.

For years, successive governments have had the 'Look East' policy to work with the South East Asian nations and offer a counterbalance to China's influence in the region. In 2014, this 'Look East' was converted to 'Act East' with a focus on economic connections, defence co-operation, and most importantly, people-to-people connect. The people-to-people connect part has greatly benefited the airlines, with the winners being Indian carriers in some cases, while foreign carriers in others. The change has been drastic from pre-COVID times to today and has been fuelled by the need from ASEAN to replace or hedge Chinese tourists, who remained away for a longer period due to restrictions in place by the Chinese government on travel. This meant that tourism-heavy economies like Thailand started offering incentives like free visas for Indians to travel, leading to a spurt in tourist traffic. Overall, the India-ASEAN market has been a mix of new connections, increased services and a growth like no other. Data obtained from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, exclusively for this article, shows that there has been a giant leap in connectivity, with Indian carriers also benefiting from this. In December 2019, the last full month of operations in the world before COVID started taking its toll, India did not have a connection with Brunei, Laos, the Philippines and Cambodia among the 10 ASEAN nations. Today, Royal Brunei operates a thrice-a-week service to Chennai; Air Cambodia flies twice a week to Delhi; Air India is starting flights to Manila in September while Laos remains the only blank spot right now. Among all the countries and connectivity, the India-Vietnam connectivity has seen a new high. From just 21 flights a week in December 2019, the connectivity has now gone up to 82 weekly flights. However, only 21 out of these are operated by Indian carriers — 14 by IndiGo and seven by Air India. The rest are being operated by the two Vietnamese carriers, Vietnam Airlines and VietJet. Their network in India has spanned to Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Delhi and Hyderabad to connect to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, after having tried a few other variations. Overall, the seats went up nearly four times, and frequencies have gone up three times. While the India-Vietnam sector has seen the foreign carriers rule over Indian ones, the story is exactly opposite to Indonesia. By December 2019, all the Indonesian carriers had pulled out of India where multiple variations like non-stop and one-stop flights via Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok had been tried to connect Jakarta and Bali to points in India. On the other side of COVID, IndiGo and Vistara (later Air India) have 21 weekly frequencies to Indonesia, with IndiGo operating a daily flight to Jakarta from Mumbai and to Bali from Bengaluru while Air India operates to Bali from Delhi. The India-Malaysia market has remained more or less the same, with a slight drop. There are 42,124 weekly seats each way across 222 frequencies between India and Malaysia. While IndiGo reduced its presence at Kuala Lumpur, it added flights to Penang and Langkawi from Chennai and Bengaluru respectively, while Air India returned to Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysian carriers have shrunk 11 per cent even though they have tried multiple options having maxed out on seats to metros due to bilateral restrictions. The India-Singapore market comprises 57,611 weekly seats across 247 flights this August, a slump of 10 per cent compared to 2019. The Singaporean side has shrunk by 8 per cent since 2019, while the Indian side has remained constant. August also sees seasonal variations to Singapore and often sees drop in capacity by seats or frequencies. The biggest gainer for seats in the market between pre-COVID and today has been Thailand. This also is the biggest market among the three nations by seats on offer. There was an addition of 35 weekly frequencies and a growth of 10 per cent in connectivity between India and Thailand. The connectivity recalibrated with new points being connected, like Surat-Bangkok, Pune-Bangkok, Bhubaneshwar-Bangkok, Bengaluru-Krabi, Kolkata-Phuket, among others. The Indian carriers grew close to 25 per cent in the India-Thailand market, taking a fair share even after the fall of Go Air, while the Thai carriers shrank about 5 per cent. The total seats on offer each week between India and Thailand stands at 71,350. The people connect is driven by affordability and opening up of new connections, making it far easier to visit tourist destinations like Krabi, Phuket, Langkawi, Penang or Bali. The total cost, often a true measure of holiday expenditure, dictates the travel plans and Indonesia, Vietnam or Thailand stand out compared to the Maldives, where there was a diplomatic row last year, or European destinations which not only are expensive but also have challenges and lead time issues for visa. The strategic dependence on Indian tourism bodes well for the country as a whole, even when we struggle to attract as many foreigners and the international traffic is dominated by Indians travelling abroad.

If one is inclined to study computer science abroad, they are likely to have recommendations to go to America. One of the main reasons is the fantastic tech industry, which has employed millions, including thousands of Indian students. With that being said, the American tech industry has been struggling since the COVID-19 pandemic; in fact, thousands of people have been laid off from major companies, including Google, Microsoft, and Meta, as well as many small tech companies. Now, the question arises: Amid these massive layoffs, should one still go to the USA to pursue a computer science degree? Read below. There are still plenty of jobs in the tech sector in the United States, even if the sector itself is going through major upheavals. It is not just a hunch; it is actually confirmed by the data coming from the US government. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for computer science graduates in the US is growing at a rate of 26% per year, much higher than the average. Generally, people with a master's degree are given priority in job opportunities. 'Employment of computer and information research scientists is projected to grow 26 percent from 2023 to 2033, much faster than the average for all occupations,' reads the statement on the official website of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nevertheless, a question emerges: how come there is still a demand for jobs in spite of layoffs happening in the tech market? The short answer is that, although the demand for entry-level positions has decreased, given the growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The demand for mid and upper-level professionals still exists. There are lots of companies looking for AI professionals and machine learning engineers. Most of the jobs are going to people who have the skills needed to perform, especially around AI. This suggests that obtaining a computer science degree is a valuable investment. However, during this time, you also need to acquire specific skills. You will have a bit of an easier time securing a job at AI-centric companies. One must continue to learn important skills to minimize the chance of losing your job.

Contractor found using subpar steel in Chilla elevated road: Noida authority

The contractor building the Chilla Elevated Road, a key link between Mayur Vihar in Delhi and the Mahamaya Flyover on the Noida Expressway, is using substandard steel for the pillars, the Noida authority said on Friday. The authority expressed strong dissatisfaction with the contractor and issued a notice for violating approved construction norms. (HT Archive) The discovery was made during a site inspection on Friday by Noida authority's chief executive officer Lokesh M, who was accompanied by officer on special duty Mahendra Prasad, general manager AK Arora, SP Singh, and other officials. The inspection revealed that the UP Bridge Corporation (UPBC), responsible for building the elevated road, was using steel that did not meet the authority's standards. 'We found that UPBCL is using substandard steel in the construction against the approved norms. We have strictly directed the agency to use the steel approved by the authority. We have also issued a notice to UPBCL seeking their reply against this anomaly,' said Lokesh M. The CEO also instructed the civil department to impose a penalty on the agency for project delays and for failing to complete work on time. Despite seeking more time, the agency has made unsatisfactory progress on the ground, officials said. The 5.6km Chilla Elevated Road project was launched in March 2025 to reduce daily congestion on the Delhi-Noida Link Road. The ₹893 crore project is expected to be completed in three years and will offer direct connectivity between Mayur Vihar and Greater Noida, Noida Sector 37, Kalindi Kunj, and Faridabad, among other locations. The road aims to ease chronic traffic bottlenecks between Noida Sector 14A and the Mahamaya Flyover, offering relief to thousands of commuters during peak hours. The project was first conceptualised in 2012, but faced delays due to funding issues from the Public Works Department (PWD), realignment around a GAIL gas pipeline, and Covid-19-related disruptions. After Delhi government approval in 2018, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath laid the foundation stone in January 2019. In addition to this project, the CEO also reviewed the golf course in Sector 151A, a new building in Sector 96, the approach road for a new bridge across the Hindon between Sectors 145 and 146, the nearly finished Bhangel elevated road, and roads in Sector 18, officials said. He also directed the water works department to involve IIT Delhi in a detailed city survey to find solutions for recurring waterlogging, which causes trouble for residents during rains, according to officials.
