How Wall Street powered to a record high and what comes next

Anthony Matesic works on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange in New York, Wednesday, April 30, 2025. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig) A trade war. A real war with bombs dropped in the Middle East. A barrage of insults hurled by the president of the United States at the head of the U.S. Federal Reserve. The stock market has powered through all of that in the past few months to set a new record Friday and reward investors who stayed their ground through a volatile stretch. The S&P 500 closed at an all-time high of 6,173. While Wall Street can take a bow — and breath a sigh of relief — there's no let-up ahead. The pause U.S. President Donald Trump put in effect for many tariffs expires in early July. Second-quarter profit reports and upcoming economic indicators could reveal more about the impact of the tariffs that did go into effect. The Fed could face a tricky decision on interest rates. Here's a look at what's happened in markets and what could lie ahead. Tariff shock Trump appeared in the Rose Garden on April 2 and announced steeper-than-expected tariffs on almost all U.S. trade partners. He especially targeted China, eventually raising the duties on imports from China to 145 per cent. Beijing retaliated by raising tariffs on U.S. goods to 125 per cent. Within just four days, the S&P 500 fell about 12 per cent, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost nearly 4,600 points, or about 11 per cent. Trump shrugged off the stock market drop but he couldn't ignore the signs of trouble in the bond and foreign exchange markets. Tumbling prices for U.S. government bonds raised worries that the U.S. Treasury market was losing its status as the world's safest place to keep cash. The value of the U.S. dollar also sank in another signal of diminishing faith in the United States as a safe haven for investors. Time to pause On April 9, Trump announced on social media a '90-day PAUSE' for most of the tariffs he'd announced, except those against China. The S&P 500 soared 9.5 per cent for one of its best days ever. In May, the administration struck a trade deal with the United Kingdom. Then came the biggest news: The U.S. and China said that they were temporarily rolling back most of the tariffs they'd imposed on one another. The countries have indicated they've reached a deal, but details are scarce. Markets briefly got spooked when Trump threatened tariffs against the European Union, but he decided to hold off — until July 9 — as the countries negotiate. War and oil The trade war was pushed out of the headline by a real war this month as Israel and Iran attacked each other. The price of oil spiked, threatening to boost inflation and slow the global economy. A U.S. strike on Iranian nuclear facilities was followed by a cease-fire and oil prices dropped sharply. Relieved, Wall Street resumed its climb toward a new record. Trump and the U.S. Fed Trump wants the Fed to lower interest rates. The Fed says it needs to see the impact of Trump's tariffs before it can act. The president has taken to regularly bashing Jerome Powell, whose term as Fed chair expires next year. According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump could name his nominee to replace Powell unusually early, in an attempt to undermine him. The drama could influence trading in the bond and foreign exchange markets, and by extension on Wall Street. The bottom line Strong profit reports for the first quarter helped offset the pressure from tariffs. Soon, companies will report results for the quarter ending June 30. While Wall Street analysts have lowered their expectations for earnings growth for the companies in the S&P 500, they still forecast solid growth of five per cent, according to FactSet. The average quarterly profit growth over the past five years is 12.7 per cent. Some companies withdrew profit forecasts amid the uncertainty created by tariffs, making forecasting even trickier. Tariffs redux? In a sign that stocks are still sensitive to trade developments, the S&P 500 fell briefly Friday afternoon after Trump said he was halting trade negotiations with Canada over its plans to continue with its tax on technology firms. The '90 day PAUSE' with most countries ends July 8. There's considerable uncertainty about what's going to happen after that. Trump's so-called reciprocal tariffs -- aimed at countries with which the United States runs trade deficits and ranging from 11 to 50 per cent -- could snap back into place, something that risks spooking the markets. The president could also say that his negotiators are making progress with some or all of the targeted countries and give them another reprieve. Members of his administration seemed to indicate this week that there is some flexibility in the deadline.

Astera Labs or Broadcom: Which Stock Leads in AI Infrastructure Now?

In the high-speed connectivity semiconductor market, Astera Labs ALAB and Broadcom AVGO are two names rapidly gaining prominence, particularly in PCIe and CXL retimers that power AI and cloud infrastructure. As AI workloads continue to increase, both companies are well-positioned to benefit. So, which connectivity chip stock is the better buy right now? Let's find out. Why Astera Labs is a Compelling Buy Right Now First-to-Market Advantage in PCIe 6 and Strategic Product Ramp in 2025: Astera Labs has established a first-mover edge in PCIe 6.0 connectivity, with Aries 6 retimers and smart gearboxes already shipping and Scorpio switches likely in volume production as projected earlier. Leo CXL controllers are also in pre-production sampling with hyperscalers. These products are qualified for next-generation GPU-based AI racks and management expects volume ramps in the second half of 2025, signaling a key inflection point in silicon content per rack. Rack-Scale Strategy and UALink Create Long-Term Growth Tailwinds: Astera Labs is expanding its TAM through a rack-scale connectivity strategy that combines high-value hardware with differentiated software. Its Scorpio X- and P-series switches and COSMOS suite enable deeper system integration, telemetry, and fleet-level optimization, driving higher ASPs and software-based lock-in. UALink 1.0, an open, high-speed interconnect, marks a structural shift. Astera plans to sample UALink-compatible products in 2026, targeting a multibillion-dollar opportunity by 2029 that aligns with its portfolio and leadership in AI infrastructure. Strong Operating Leverage Despite R&D Investment Surge: With Astera aggressively ramping up investment, the first-quarter adjusted R&D spending rose 14.2% year over year. The company delivered an adjusted operating margin of 33.7%, demonstrating tight cost control and clear operating leverage on higher product volumes. Furthermore, gross margin was 74.9%, reflecting stable ASPs and favorable mix, even amid preproduction shipments. With $925 million in cash and positive operating cash flow, Astera is also capitalized to pursue sustained innovation without near-term dilution risk. Broadcom's Key Progress in the Semiconductor Space AI Networking Momentum With Ethernet-Based Portfolio: AI networking revenues grew more than 170% year over year and now account for 40% of Broadcom's AI-related revenues. The company's Ethernet-first approach, leveraging Tomahawk switches, Jericho routers and NICs, has made it the preferred vendor for scale-out and scale-up AI clusters among hyperscalers. The newly launched Tomahawk 6, boasting 102.4 Tbps switching capacity, allows hyperscalers to flatten AI networks into just two tiers, reducing latency, power and cost. XPU Custom Silicon Gaining Critical Mass: Broadcom is scaling up its custom AI accelerators (XPUs) for at least three major hyperscaler customers, each expected to deploy around 1 million clusters by 2027. With rising demand for inference, some deployments may begin as early as late 2026. This growing XPU business strengthens customer relationships and adds a high-margin revenue stream. High-Margin Software Growth and Strong Capital Returns: Broadcom's infrastructure software revenues grew 25% year over year in the second quarter of fiscal 2025, fueled by strong adoption of its voltage-controlled filter (VCF) platform post-VMware acquisition, now used by 87% of its top 10,000 customers. This high-margin, recurring software business complements its chip segment and supports private cloud and AI workloads. Broadcom also delivered $10 billion in EBITDA (67% margin), $6.4 billion in free cash flow and returned $7 billion to shareholders, highlighting its capital-efficient model and strong value creation. ALAB, AVGO Outperform Sector and Benchmark in Three Months Over the past three months, Astera Labs and Broadcom shares have rallied 61.2%% and 60.1% respectively, significantly outpacing the broader sector 's 18.6% gain and the S&P 500's 9.5% rise. Average Target Price for ALAB and AVGO Suggest Upsides Based on short-term price targets offered by 14 analysts, ALAB's average price target represents an increase of 10.4% from the last closing price of $89.63. Based on short-term price targets offered by 30 analysts, AVGO's average price target represents an improvement of 10.8% from the last closing price of $264.65. Buy ALAB Now While both Astera Labs and Broadcom are well-positioned to ride the AI infrastructure wave, ALAB presents a more focused trajectory. With a first-mover lead in PCIe 6.0 and CXL connectivity, likely volume ramp-ups in the second quarter of 2025, and early bets on UALink, Astera is set for an inflection in revenues and margin expansion. In contrast, Broadcom's non-AI chip segments remain a headwind, with its fiscal second-quarter non-AI semiconductor revenues down 5% year over year and expected to stay flat. Given ALAB's Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) versus AVGO's Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), Astera Lab currently stands out as a relatively stronger player for investors seeking targeted exposure to next-gen AI connectivity. ARM Holdings' Valuation Running Ahead of Fundamentals Amid AI Hype

Arm Holdings plc ARM has attracted immense investor attention, thanks to its perceived position at the heart of the AI revolution, given that its architecture underpins a vast number of chips used in everything from smartphones to emerging AI devices. However, its current valuation warrants a closer look. ARM trades at nearly 85X forward 12-month earnings, a significant premium to the broader semiconductor industry average of 33X. While the company's strategic relevance is undeniable, the elevated multiple reflects expectations that may take time to materialize in financial results. Arm-based chips are shipped at an impressive scale, over 30 billion units annually, yet the company generates relatively modest revenues per chip. In fiscal 2024, Arm reported $4 billion in total revenue, with $2 billion derived from royalties. This places the average royalty rate at about 6.5 cents per chip, while overall per-chip revenue stands at approximately 13 cents. Arm's strength lies in its broad ecosystem and power-efficient designs, which position it well for long-term trends in AI, IoT, and mobile computing. However, its current revenue model, driven primarily by low per-unit royalties, indicates a need for more substantial near-term monetization. Investors may want to consider locking in gains while the stock remains priced for perfection. Further upside may depend on a clearer path to stronger revenue and earnings growth. Beyond ARM: NVIDIA and Qualcomm are Better Valued While ARM's valuation may prompt caution, investors looking for semiconductor exposure with clearer financial traction might consider NVIDIA NVDA and Qualcomm QCOM. NVIDIA, with a forward 12-month P/E of 32, continues to dominate the AI accelerator space, with strong revenue and earnings growth, driven by surging demand for its GPUs. The company's leadership in AI infrastructure makes NVIDIA a favorite among growth-oriented investors. Meanwhile, Qualcomm, trading at just 13x forward earnings, offers a more diversified chip portfolio spanning smartphones, automotive, and IoT. Its solid royalty business and increasing footprint in AI-powered edge devices position Qualcomm for steady expansion. Both NVIDIA and Qualcomm have demonstrated the ability to monetize their innovations more effectively than ARM, making them compelling alternatives. ARM's Price Performance, Estimates The stock has surged 28% year to date, significantly outperforming the industry 's 11% rally. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for ARM's earnings has been on the decline over the past 60 days. ARM stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).
