"Weapons" maintained top spot during second weekend, scaring off newcomer "Nobody 2"
'Weapons' scared its way to the top of the box office in its debut and managed to stay there during its second box office weekend, beating out 'Freakier Friday' and newcomer 'Nobody 2.' Zach Cregger's horror earned $25 million in 3,450 North American theaters, a 43% drop from its first weekend. The highly anticipated film benefitted from strong audience reviews and social media trends to attract large crowds. 'Freakier Friday,' which lost the battle for first place to 'Weapons' during its double premiere, also maintained its second spot, bringing in $14.5 million domestically. The films' staying power comes during a slower box office weekend, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for the data firm Comscore. Both films also prevailed against 'Nobody 2,' the R-rated action sequel. The Bob Odenkirk-led film earned $9.25 million across 3,260 North American theaters in its debut weekend. 'August came on strong last year, so it makes comparisons tough,' Dergarabedian said, noting the box office success of movies like 'Deadpool and Wolverine' and the horror sci-fi 'Alien: Romulus' that premiered this time last year. This summer is unlikely to hit the $4 billion benchmark, but succeeded in provided movie goers a dynamic and diverse slate of movies, he said. "I can't find a genre that's not represented or a demographic that wouldn't be attracted to one of these films out there," Dergarabedian said. 'It's just that eclectic mix of films with appeal to every demographic.' 'Nobody 2' follows the pandemic success of the first in the series, 'Nobody," which released in 2021. In the sequel, Hutch Mansell, the assassin-turned-nice-guy, played by Odenkirk, returns to the big screen, this time taking a much-needed family vacation that goes awry. The calm weekend turns anything but as Mansell uncovers a corrupt town. Jim Orr, president of domestic distributions at Universal Pictures, said he hopes the movie's reaction scores — a 89% Audience score and B+ CinemaScore — point 'to a long and successful run at the domestic box office.' 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps" took the fourth spot during its fourth weekend in theaters, bringing in $8.8 million domestically. The film stumbled at the box office after its initially strong $118 million debut. Another sequel, 'The Bad Guys 2,' took fifth place with $7.5 million during its third weekend in theaters. Notably, Dergarabedian said, international movies made a splash in the top 15 this weekend. 'Coolie,' an Indian action thriller, debuted domestically and snatched the tenth spot, followed by 'War 2,' another Indian action movie, at number 11. The domestic re-release of 'Shin Godzilla," a Japanese film that initially premiered in 2016, came in at the 12th spot. Top 10 movies by domestic box office With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. 'Weapons,' $25 million. 2. 'Freakier Friday,' $14.5 million. 3. 'Nobody 2,' $9.25 million. 4. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' $8.8 million. 5. 'The Bad Guys 2,' $7.5 million. 6. 'Superman,' $5.3 million. 7. 'The Naked Gun,' $4.8 million. 8. 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' $2.9 million. 9. 'F1: The Movie,' $2.6 million. 10. 'Coolie," $2.4 million.

Zack Wheeler's Phillies teammates react after shocking diagnosis out of the blue: 'It's scary, we're praying for him'
The Philadelphia Phillies are rallying around starting pitcher Zack Wheeler, who now faces a disturbing diagnosis. Wheeler has been diagnosed with a 'right upper extremity blood clot' and will be placed on the 15-day injured list by the team. The news was delivered by general manager Dave Dombrowski and head athletic trainer Paul Buchheit in Washington, DC after the Phillies fell to the Nationals 2-0. 'There's not a whole lot we can say on it at this time,' Dombrowski said, 'but I commend Paul and the doctors for finding this because it could've been a much more trying situation than what it is.' Buchheit confirmed that the clot is located in Wheeler's throwing shoulder. Wheeler initially had a start in August pushed back due to shoulder soreness before making two on-schedule appearances. But, he noticed a decrease in his velocity and only tossed five innings on Friday night against Washington. 'Zack had been feeling better after his right shoulder soreness, but yesterday some symptoms had changed,' Buchheit said. 'He felt a little heaviness. The doctors here were great in helping to diagnose and expediting that diagnosis this morning.' No definitive prognosis has been reached and doctors don't believe the clot was responsible for his previous shoulder soreness. Wheeler us set to be evaluated in Philadelphia next week. His Phillies teammates are all concerned and reacted with worry to the jarring news. Fellow starter Taijuan Walker said, 'It's obviously scary. ... Obviously, we're praying for him, trying to keep in contact with him. But I know that he knows we're all here for him.' 'I shot him a text,' said star slugger and NL MVP front-runner Kyle Schwarber. 'Sounded like everything was getting the tests done and things like that. It's a scary situation, right? … Just want to get him back in here and hear from him. 'Hopefully, it's not anything too serious. I don't know what the prognosis is going to be or what they're going to have to do. I don't know if it's surgery. 'I don't think anyone knows right now. … But get him in here and get him healthy. I think that's the biggest thing. 'Baseball is baseball. When it comes to someone's health like that, we need him healthy first. He's got a family, so we want to get him feeling good for them and get him back to speed whenever we can.' It also throws a wrench in the plans of manager Rob Thomson to run a six-man starting rotation. But that's not the main thing on his mind at the moment. 'We don't know the timeline,' Thomson said. 'I'm thinking a lot about Zack and his family because it's not a hamstring injury or something like that. But I feel good about the depth that we have. If we have to go to a (six-man rotation), it could be (Andrew) Painter, it could be somebody else. We've just got to carry on. People have to step up.' Wheeler signed with Philadelphia in December 2019 and has been a star for them ever since. He's posted a record of 69-37 and averaged a 2.91 ERA in his time in the City of Brotherly Love. So far this season, he has an ERA of 2.71 and a record of 10-5.

WNBA fans fearing the worst for Caitlin Clark after coach gives concerning injury update
One of the faces of the WNBA may not play again in the regular season in a shocking development to Indiana Fever fans as Caitlin Clark 's return to the court does not appear to be imminent. Fever head coach Stephanie White gave the latest update on Clark's health on Sunday, as she will miss her 13th straight game against the Connecticut Sun, and 23rd overall this season, with a groin injury. Now, it is not a given Clark is back by the end of the regular season, with Indiana still to play 10 games before a possible postseason game. 'That's the hope. The hope is that she's back,' White said of Clark's timetable for a return before the playoffs. White's previous update on Clark came earlier in the week, where she stayed tight-lipped about when her best player could be back on the court. 'It's day-to-day right now, we're putting no timetable on it. [She is] going through the rehab process, and then we want to reintegrate her from a strength and conditioning standpoint and then get her back to basketball activities.' 'So we're taking it one day at a time, really slow rolling it, slow playing it this time. The most important thing for us is Caitlin's long-term health and getting her back to 100% before we put her back on the floor.' Clark has been limited to only 13 appearances this season, a whimper compared to her stellar rookie season with multiple injures, which began in May. The Fever are 8-5 with her in the lineup and 10-11 without her in WNBA action. The team did win the WNBA Commissioner's Cup without her, with that contest not counting toward the league standings. Indiana is in seventh place in the WNBA standings, in the middle of the logjam for the final playoff spots. The Fever are 1.5 games ahead of the ninth-place Los Angeles Sparks to stay in the WNBA playoff race, while also 1.5 games back of the Phoenix Mercury and Las Vegas Aces, who are in a tie for fourth place. Indiana's regular-season finale is on Sept. 9 against the Minnesota Lynx, who also happen to be the team's next opponent on Friday after Sunday's matchup against Connecticut.
