Jammu region on high alert, protests break out in several locations after attack on tourists in Pahalgam
Jammu region has been put on high alert, and protests have broken out in several locations on Tuesday after the militant attack on tourists in south Kashmir's Pahalgam earlier in the day.
The area where the attack took place is adjacent to Kishtwar district's Chatroo area, where security forces and the police had on April 10-11 killed three militants, believed to be foreigners. A large quantity of arms, including M-4 and AK series rifles, ammunition and explosives were seized from them.
Expressing concern over the killing of tourists in Kashmir, the Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the main organisation of traders and industrialists, has given a call for Jammu bandh on Wednesday.
While people in Doda town held a demonstration and burnt effigies late in the evening, the Kishtwar unit of Sanatan Dharam Sabha gave a call for bandh on Wednesday in protest against the attack.
In Jammu city's Gujjar Nagar area, people from the Muslim community came out in large numbers, raising slogans against Pakistan. They described the attack on tourists as an attempt to damage the image of the Kashmiri people's hospitable nature.
Bhaderwah's Anjuman-e-Islamia president Riaz Ahmed Najar condemned the attack, describing it as a 'murder of humanity'. He demanded stern action against those involved in the attack.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha also condemned the attack, saying: 'Anti-terror ops launched to neutralise terrorists. Entire nation is angry & blood of our forces is boiling. I want to assure the nation that perpetrators of Pahalgam attack will have to pay a very very heavy price for their heinous act. My heartfelt condolences to bereaved families.'
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed shock and anguish over the attack, describing it as an 'abomination'.
'This attack on our visitors is an abomination. The perpetrators of this attack are animals — inhuman and worthy of contempt. No words of condemnation are enough,' he said.
Sunil Sharma, senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the J&K Legislative Assembly, accused Pakistan of trying to create unrest in India. 'It has been targeting the Hindu community in the Jammu region to create division in the region,' he said, adding that the harm inflicted is irreversible and expressing confidence that security forces would neutralise every culprit.
J&K Congress president Tariq Hameed Karra also condemned the attack and accused the BJP of misleading the nation on the situation in Kashmir.

Back to back security review meetings are being held in Kashmir for safe and secure Amarnath Yatra. In the past six days over a half a dozen security meetings were held in the Valley for the safe and secure Amarnath yatra which begins next month. Today, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha also chaired a high-level security review meeting ahead of Amarnath yatra. The Lieutenant Governor took a comprehensive review of the security apparatus and measures deployed by the security agencies to ensure safety of the pilgrims. Sinha directed for seamless coordination among the Civil Administration, Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board, J&K Police, Army, Security Forces, and all the other crucial stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and successful holy pilgrimage. 'The Lieutenant Governor reviewed the working of the security grid and various significant steps being taken by Army, CAPFs and J&K Police to ensure foolproof security for the Yatra. The Lieutenant Governor also reviewed the contingency plan, deployment of police and security personnel, preparedness and response mechanism of line departments and emphasized on better coordination among all stakeholders involved in yatra management,' the J&K government spokesman said. Sinha on Wednesday had urged devotees to visit in large numbers as foolproof security arrangements are in place for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. Sinha, accompanied by senior officers, performed the 'Pratham Puja', which marked the ceremonial beginning of the annual Amarnath Yatra. Sinha also took stock of the arrangements at the Shrine. This year, Amarnath Yatra will commence on July 3, simultaneously from both the routes – the Pahalgam track in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district-- and it will culminate on August 9 on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. The security will be further beefed up this year due to the attack on tourists in Pahalgam on April 22 when terrorists killed 26 tourists at Baisran, Pahalgam. More CRPF companies will be deployed on the yatra routes and the entire trek on both Pahalgam and Baltal routes are being searched on a daily basis. Even J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah recently said a safe and secure yatra will be the top priority of his government.

Assam govt orders shoot-on-sight order to quell communal tension in Dhubri
1 2 Guwahati: Faced with communal tension in border town Dhubri and provocative posters on integration of Dhubri district with Bangladesh appearing, the Assam govt on Friday issued shoot-at- sight orders. The govt is also rushing in Rapid Action Force (RAF) and CRPF personnel in the district after mob clashes ensued over objectionable objects being found near a place of worship. Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who visited the district on Friday said that at least three posters were retrieved by police at Dhubri which were pasted at various locations by one organization "Nabin Bangla." "Since last one week the law and order at Dhubri has been challenging. A communal group is trying to create disturbances which the government will not tolerate," Sarma said. Sarma later posted on X, "I visited Dhubri and directed law enforcement officers to follow zero tolerance against elements who desecrate….." places of worship. "In Dhubri, a particular group has become active with the intent to damage our temples. We have issued SHOOT AT SIGHT ORDERS," Himanta wrote. A day after Bakrid on June 7, an animal part was found in front of a place of worship, following which both Hindus and Muslims appealed for peace and harmony. The next day again the incident was repeated, and stones were thrown at night, Sarma added. Sarma said that for Bakrid, thousands of cattle were brought from West Bengal by a 'new beef mafia' in Dhubri. "I have ordered an inquiry into this. I have directed the authorities to arrest who has started this cattle trade,' Sarma said. He said that next year, he will be present at Dhubri on the day of Eid and stay the next day as well. "We are fully committed to ensure enforcement of law and order in the district and defeat all communal forces," he added. Dhubri district has the highest Muslim population in the entire state constituting 90 percent of the district's total population, majority of whom are believed to be of Bangladeshi origin. Kin back home fear for safety of J&K students stranded in Iran
The Israeli attack over Iran has triggered panic across the student community studying in Iran and their families back in India, including J&K, with the majority of them demanding evacuation from the region. Hundreds of students of Jammu and Kashmir are studying in various universities and educational institutions of Iran and are scared after Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian soil and killed several of its top military leaders, including the chief of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami. The students said that the attack happened around 3 to 3.30 am during the night triggering chaos and panic. Tabiya Zahra, a 2nd year MBBS student from Kashmir currently studying in Tehran University, said that they were awoken by the sounds during the night which they first thought were thunder strikes. 'We were sleeping when we heard sounds like there were thunder strikes but soon there was chaos. The university authorities told us to go to the basement as these were attacks. Everybody is scared and tension is palpable,' Zahra told HT from Tehran. She said there was panic among the 40 Indian students, majority of them from Kashmir, who were staying in the dormitory she was in. She said that there were hundreds of other international students from India like them studying in various universities of Iran and they want to go home. 'Please evacuate us as soon as possible. There is tension and our families back home are also scared as there is uncertainty. There is also fear that the communication may get snapped as many SIM cards of students are not working any more,' she said. The students said that they were provided emails from the Indian embassy in Iran in which they had to provide the information of individual students. 'So far there has been no forward movement as the air spaces are closed,' she said. Badraan Jeelani, a resident of Srinagar whose sister is doing MBBS in Tehran University, said that they want safe return of their loved ones. 'They were in panic as the blasts happened close to a building near their university. We got to know about the situation at around 4 am. Everybody is worried. We are also in touch with some other parents. We want the Government of India to start some evacuation process so that our loved ones return home safely,' Jeelani said. Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has written to the Union Minister for External Affairs, Dr S Jaishankar, seeking urgent intervention for the evacuation of hundreds of Kashmiri students stranded in Iran amid the attacks. The association expressed its concern regarding the dire situation faced by hundreds of Kashmiri students currently studying in Iran, following the unprecedented escalation in hostilities between Iran and Israel. 'This volatile security environment has left thousands of Indian students, the majority of them from Kashmir valley, extremely vulnerable and exposed to immediate danger. These students had travelled to Iran to pursue professional education, particularly MBBS, due to the country's economically viable academic infrastructure. Now, they find themselves in the middle of an active military zone, fearful for their lives,' wrote Nasir Khuehami, national convener of the JKSA. According to Khuehami, there are some 1,500 students from Kashmir studying in Iran. He said many of these students are enrolled in colleges and universities that are situated close to vital military installations and strategic sites while some students are even located in cities where direct Israeli airstrikes have been reported. 'Numerous students have contacted the Indian Embassy in Tehran seeking support, relocation, or evacuation. However, they have not received any reassuring response or concrete information about what the next steps will be. They remain in a state of confusion and despair, with no clarity about evacuation plans, safety protocols, or emergency assistance,' he said. The association requested the Ministry of External Affairs to establish dedicated and responsive communication lines between Indian students in Iran and the Indian Embassy in Tehran. 'We also request the formulation and immediate preparedness of a comprehensive evacuation plan. If the situation continues to escalate or critical infrastructure comes under sustained attack, timely evacuation could be the difference between life and death,' the JKSA said. 'We hope this urgent appeal will receive your immediate and compassionate attention. The students from Jammu and Kashmir studying in Iran are our responsibility. Their safe return home must be a national priority,' it said.
