Hugh Jackman's ex-wife Deborra-Lee Furness calls their split a 'profound wound' and says she has gained 'wisdom' from the "traumatic betrayal" and divorce.
Deborra-Lee Furness has spoken out for the first time since her divorce from actor Hugh Jackman was finalised, describing their separation as deeply painful. The 69-year-old Australian actress and philanthropist issued a statement acknowledging the emotional toll of the split after nearly three decades of marriage.
'My heart and compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal," she said in a statement provided to PEOPLE and first shared by The Daily Mail.
Furness and Jackman, now 56, were married in 1996 and remained one of Hollywood's most enduring couples until they announced their separation in 2023, ending 27 years together.
She referred to the breakup as 'a profound wound that cuts deep," but expressed faith in the healing process. 'However I believe in a higher power and that God/the universe, whatever you relate to as your guidance, is always working FOR us," she said. 'This belief has helped me navigate the breakdown of an almost three-decade marriage."
Furness explained that through the process, she gained clarity and strength. 'Even when we are presented with apparent adversity, it is leading us to our greatest good, our true purpose. It can hurt, but in the long run, returning to yourself and living within your own integrity, values and boundaries is liberation and freedom."
She added that she no longer takes such life events personally. 'We are all on our individual journeys and I believe that the relationships in our lives are not random. We are drawn to people, we invite them in, in order to learn our lessons and to recognize and heal the broken parts of ourselves…I remain grateful," she concluded.
In January 2025, Jackman was spotted enjoying a casual evening out in Santa Monica with his former Broadway costar Sutton Foster, who also went through a divorce in late 2024. Foster later praised Jackman in an interview, calling him 'one of the greatest guys ever."
Furness and Jackman first publicly confirmed their separation in September 2023 with a joint statement. They share two children: Oscar and Ava.
