NewVines International Founder on How Shifting Cultural Mindsets Can End Generational Poverty in Africa

In most parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, the roots of poverty run deep. Virgil Hughes, founder of NewVines International (NVI), has spent the last decade working with communities in Kenya, Uganda, and the Ivory Coast. His conclusion? To truly break the cycle of poverty, funding alone isn't enough. What's required is a profound shift in mindset, as well as in culture.
"It took me a while to realize it," Hughes reflects. "But what we're really seeing is culture change and mindset shift. That's what breaks generational poverty. You can't provide enough money to fix this. People need to be encouraged to do it themselves."
This faith-based nonprofit headquartered in Virginia operates on that exact premise. Through biblically grounded teachings, financial training, and deep engagement with local churches, NVI empowers individuals not just to improve their financial conditions but to fundamentally rethink their relationship with work, money, and responsibility.
The tight-knit communal cultures of rural Africa evolved from necessity. In regions threatened by natural predators and economic instability, mutual resilience became essential for survival. That has fostered beautiful traditions of sharing and interdependence. And, along with that, unintended barriers to financial independence.
"In many African communities, there's an unspoken expectation that people should unconditionally share whatever they have," Hughes explains. "While interdependence plays an important role in communal living, without boundaries, people can become dependent and mired in poverty, keeping everyone at the lowest level."
Hughes offers the example of a woman with a professional job. Her family knows exactly when she gets paid. And by the next day, her paycheck is gone, handed out to relatives. She's left with nothing, and no one is expected to explain how they used her hard-earned money. "That mindset," he explains, "is a cultural artifact of survival-based living, but it doesn't work in a modern economy driven by fiat currency. It becomes a system where no one is able to build financial security."
Another cultural challenge lies in the absence of clear property rights or personal responsibility. Hughes recounts a story of a young man who damaged a leader's property. Despite the costly repairs, there was no expectation for the man to repay any of the damages. "The cultural issue was not who caused the damage, but who's most able to actually pay for it. That kind of thinking removes personal accountability and reinforces a cycle where actions have no consequences," he states.
Rather than impose Western cultural norms, NVI takes a different approach, bringing biblical wisdom into the center of community development. "We're not exporting American values. It wouldn't make sense for us to. Instead, we're sharing biblical principles and then working with people to apply those principles in their cultural context," Hughes explains.
At the heart of NVI's approach is a spiritual reframing. For example, Proverbs 31 becomes a practical roadmap for transformation. Hughes recounts how one woman in the Adopt-a-Widow program said, "You've taken us from being Proverbs 14 women, foolish and making poor decisions, to being Proverbs 31 women: wise and full of purpose." Christian ethics, Hughes argues, are inherently conducive to financial flourishing. Integrity, accountability, wise stewardship, and generosity are all teachings that translate into long-term stability. But, he says, these must be taught and internalized. "Biblical ethics are by their very nature development-oriented," Hughes says. "Through these teachings, individuals internalize a sense of right and wrong. And this alters the foundational relationship with money, work, and even others."
NVI's work is grounded in shifting a 'victim mindset' toward a belief in self-empowerment, particularly important in post-colonial societies where people still carry the psychological weight of historic oppression. Hughes explains, "You don't just 'get over' colonization in one generation. But what we're seeing through our training is that people are beginning to say: I can do something about my future. And that itself is a huge mental leap."
Its training is highly practical. NVI teaches people to save, budget, and make intentional financial choices. "We had men stand up and say they didn't realize gambling was wrong," Hughes shares. "They were wasting money without even thinking about it. Our teachings helped them become aware."
One of NVI's budgeting principles is "Give yourself a small reward, but only after you've set money aside for your bills and emergencies." These teachings are changing daily habits and bringing structure to lives where survival has been the only priority.
NVI's programs currently reach many churches across western Kenya and eastern Uganda. Its most notable initiative, Adopt-a-Widow, allows donors to sponsor women who have lost their husbands, often survivors of abuse or severe poverty. For $50 a month, donors help fund a kitchen garden and NVI training. After a year, participants begin small businesses, supported by 'Table Banking' and communal savings groups.
Hughes recently visited one of these groups. He says, "What I found was stunning. Women who once described themselves as 'in darkness' were now running small businesses and teaching budgeting to their grandchildren. One woman said she no longer spends a shilling on vegetables; she grows and sells her own." These groups, Hughes notes, are self-reinforcing. Once people start to experience change, they support each other. "They don't need us as much anymore. That's the goal," he adds.
With centers in Kenya, Uganda, and The Ivory Coast already thriving, NVI is expanding efforts into Togo and Tanzania. "Our goal," Hughes says, "is to create hubs of transformation where people can come, receive training, and take it back to their own communities. We're here to equip Africans to uplift Africa."
Truly, NVI is untangling the deep-rooted cultural narratives that keep people locked in poverty. "This isn't about imposing a new culture," Hughes says. "It's about revealing truths that lead to flourishing and watching people rediscover their dignity, their responsibility, and their given potential." That's the mission Virgil Hughes and NewVines International are living out one village, one training, and one mindset at a time.

Africa has everything it takes to become a "renewable superpower", UN head Antonio Guterres said Thursday, as he called for greater investment in green energy across the resource-rich continent. Guterres spoke at a three-day development conference in Japan attended by African leaders, where Tokyo is offering itself as an alternative to China as African nations reel from a debt crisis exacerbated by Western aid cuts, conflict and climate change. "We must mobilise finance and technology, so that Africa's natural wealth benefits African people, we must build a thriving renewables and manufacturing base across the continent," Guterres said at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD). "Green power in Africa lowers energy costs, diversifies supply chains and accelerates decarbonisation for everyone." China has invested heavily in Africa over the past decade, with its companies there signing deals worth hundreds of billions of dollars to finance shipping ports, railways, roads and other projects under Beijing's Belt and Road global infrastructure initiative. But new lending is drying up, and developing countries are grappling with a "tidal wave" of debt to both China and international private creditors, the Lowy Institute, an Australian think tank, said in May. African countries have also seen Western aid slashed, in particular due to President Donald Trump's dismantling of the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Guterres warned in his speech in the Japanese port city of Yokohama that "debt must not drown development" and that Africa needed increased concessional finance and greater lending capacity from multilateral development banks. He also urged greater investment in climate solutions. "Africa has everything it takes to become a renewable superpower, from solar and wind to the critical minerals that power new technology," he said. Attendees at TICAD included Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Kenyan President William Ruto. Ruto said on social media platform X that Kenya was in talks with Japanese automaker Toyota for the provision of 5,000 "e-mobility vehicles" as part of the country's "commitment to clean energy". In his opening address at the forum on Wednesday, Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced a plan to train 30,000 people in artificial intelligence in Africa over three years and to study the idea of a Japan-Africa Economic Partnership. Before the meeting kicked off, Ishiba also announced a vision for a distribution network that links African and Indian Ocean nations. Both Tinubu and Ramaphosa, speaking on X, said they wanted a shift from aid to investment partnerships.

The Trump administration is in talks to take a 10% stake in the struggling chipmaker. Some say it makes perfect strategic sense, but critics argue that it could set a risky precedent. The White House has confirmed that the Trump administration is in talks with Intel about acquiring a stake of up to 10% in the chipmaker. "The president wants to put America's needs first, both from a national security and economic perspective," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Tuesday, after days of media speculation over a possible deal. Although it would be unusual for the US government to take a stake in such a large company, but it would align with President Donald Trump's trend of intervening in the free market during his second term. Chipmakers Nvidia and AMD recently agreed to pay around 15% of their sales in China to the US government. Another example was the recent sale of US Steel to Japan's Nippon Steel, a deal which gave the US government a so-called "golden share," giving President Trump sweeping veto power over US Steel's corporate decisions as well as the right to appoint a board member. There was also the announcement last month that the US government would become the biggest shareholder in the US's only operational rare earths mine, owned by MP Materials. "The Trump administration is really taking a broad view of what is possible for US government interventions in the private sector and very much pushing the limit," Geoffrey Gertz, senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, told DW. He describes the recent moves as "unusual," drawing a distinction between other administrations' attempts to stimulate entire sectors and Trump's more personal, targeted approach. "They're cutting one-off deals with individual companies," he said. "That's quite a different approach from setting industry-wide industrial policy standards or guidelines." Yet there is plenty of support for Trump's approach, particularly when it comes to sectors seen as strategically important in the US's ongoing rivalry with China, such as semiconductors and rare earths. Sujai Shivakumar, director of the Renewing American Innovation program at the Center for Strategic & International Studies in Washington DC, says the global semiconductor industry is not a "level-playing field" given the massive state support provided in countries like China and elsewhere. "Intel is more than just a company, and I think the decision to invest should be applauded," he told DW. "It's time to understand that this kind of industrial policy is now the norm across advanced economies and that governments are providing this form of extensive support," he said. "If we hold to this myth of a purely pure market here in the US, it risks ceding the ground for one of the most strategic industries of the century." Meanwhile, Gertz says it is not "inherently wrong" for the government to invest in Intel. "I do think there are strategic sectors and there is a case for active industrial policy, again, particularly these areas where there's national security spillovers," he said. Both the Biden and Trump administrations shared the goal of boosting the US's capacity to build advanced chips, needed for practically every aspect of the modern, high-tech industry. The Biden administration introduced the CHIPS Act in 2022, legislation that received bipartisan support. It earmarked substantial federal assistance and grants for companies such as Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC) and Samsung, with the aim of boosting production on US soil. Given that Samsung is from South Korea and TSMC is from Taiwan, Intel represents the most obvious prospect in terms of production within the US. However, the company has been beset by problems in recent years. It has struggled to compete with TSMC in manufacturing the most advanced semiconductors for external clients and has also not captured a share of the market for AI data chips, dominated by Nvidia. Its revenues have been sluggish, and its share price has plunged. Trump, who has been critical of the CHIPS Act, called for Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan's resignation earlier this month. However, his approach changed after meeting with Tan, when the move to invest in the company gathered steam. Sujai Shivakumar says Intel is the only US-headquartered firm within striking distance of regaining US dominance in advanced chipmaking and believes the company's potential justifies the US government stepping in. "It needs commercial demand for its products to be viable, but it needs that viability to secure demand," he said. "So it's stuck in this rut. And unless there's a strong signal that it can actually find the traction to get out, it's going to be spinning its wheels." Bloomberg reports that the deal could entail the US government taking an equity stake in exchange for some of the grants awarded to Intel through the CHIPS Act. United States Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick is negotiating on behalf of the US government. He told CNBC that the US should "benefit" from that arrangement, saying "that is exactly Donald Trump's perspective, which is: 'why are we giving a company worth $100 billion this kind of money?'" "There are risks of crony capitalism," says Geoffrey Gertz. "You can get to a situation where you're undermining competition, undermining long-term innovation by having a few favored companies who can frankly be a bit lazy because they know they are protected by the state." Sujai Shivakumar says the key is balance between genuine strategic concerns and market forces. "It's not that we should write a blank check," he says. "We can't leave everything up to the market. There needs to be some balance, a smart industrial policy that can help the company restore confidence among its customers, investors, and suppliers."

Sony on Wednesday said it is bumping up the price of PlayStation 5 video game consoles by $50 in the United States due to a "challenging economic environment." Tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump hike the cost of goods brought into the US, leaving companies like Japan's Sony to decide whether to pass that on to consumers. "Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment," Sony Interactive Entertainment vice president of global marketing Isabelle Tomatis said in a post. After initially being threatened with a 25 percent hike, Japan negotiated a 15 percent tariff with the Trump administration. "As a result, we've made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the US." The new price for PS5 will be $550, with a "Digital Edition" priced at $500 and a Pro version for $750, according to Tomatis. In May, Sony warned it was considering tweaking prices in the US, estimating that tariffs could wind up costing the company about $680 million in the fiscal year. American companies are feeling the crunch, too. New York-based cosmetics giant Estee Lauder recently estimated the impact of the new tariffs at around $100 million for the 2026 financial year and plans to adjust its prices to offset the additional cost. US snack giant PepsiCo could increase prices of its soft drinks about 10 percent to mitigate effects of US tariffs, particularly those on imported aluminum used to make soda cans, according to trade magazine Beverage Digest. Meanwhile, California-based energy drink maker Monster Beverages is considering raising prices due to a "complex and dynamic customs landscape," according to chief executive Hilton Schlosberg. The Commerce Department this week said the US broadened its steel and aluminum tariffs, impacting hundreds more products that contain both metals such as child seats, tableware and heavy equipment. Since returning to the presidency, Trump has imposed tariffs on almost all US trading partners. Though the impact of Trump's tariffs on consumer prices has been limited so far, economists warn that their full effects are yet to be seen. Some businesses have coped by bringing forward purchases of products they expected will encounter tariffs. Others have passed on additional costs to their consumers, or absorbed a part of the fresh tariff burden.
