Army of volunteers behind Badminton Horse Trials
More than 800 volunteers turn up every year to help out at the Badminton Horse Trials in Gloucestershire which run this week between 7 - 11 May.
For one couple the event, which attracts about 200,000 visitors to watch the best horses and riders in the world, it really is a love affair.
Martin Fleur-Lane met his wife-to-be Emma nearly 25 years ago by the finish of the cross country course.
"We subsequently got engaged a few years later by the lake, so there are many happy memories for both of us, with families and friends attending with us over the years," says Emma.
Throughout the year, Martin travels past Badminton every day to his furniture workshop in Luckington.
He has been volunteering at the event since about the mid 90s.
Mostly, he says he would be riding a quad bike delivering dressage scores down to the secretaries and giving lifts to riders from the lorry park to other areas of the ground.

"As a fence judge you are judging whether a horse and rider have both cleared the fence without incurring any penalties between the white and the red flags, which are positioned either side of the fence.
"During the day you also need to blow a whistle towards the next fence to alert them each time a competitor is approaching and to alert spectators in the immediate area that a horse is galloping down the track.
"It's like a chain of whistles going around the course so that people know a competitor is on their way."
Emma has been volunteering since about 2003.
"We have regularly volunteered at various events over the years taking on various roles such as cross country steward, doing the start box, doing provisional scores in the cross country control box and dressage score writing," she said.
Jane Tuckwell, the event director said she could not manage without her army of volunteers.
"MARS Badminton Horse Trials are incredibly grateful to all the wonderful volunteers that throw themselves 100% into the event to make it happen," she said.
Martin and Emma along with the hundreds of other volunteers do it because they love it.
"I have been coming since I was a little girl and always loved it," said Emma.
"For me it is my Christmas and is the highlight of the year.
"We have met many wonderful people over the years fence judging at events and made numerous friends who we regularly see throughout the year or team up with to fence judge with or work in other areas of events we attend.
"It takes many years of hard work and dedication from the riders, owners and support teams around them to get to this level and a lot of luck.
"You are seeing the best of the best here this week."
"Badminton is not only to us, but to many people is the premier event in the world for everyone to come and enjoy and have such a fantastic weekend whether your horse mad or not it's just a fabulous day out for all the family and the dogs love it too!"

Barcelona defender set for surgery after injury on international duty
Barcelona have been relatively injury-free over the course of the season, but saw two of their players go down on international duty at the under-21 Euros on the opening day of competition. One of them is set for surgery. Spain were up against the hosts Slovakia on Wednesday, and after going 2-0 up in the opening 20 minutes, were forced to find a late winner through Cesar Tarrega after Slovakia had mounted a second-half comeback. La Rojita will face Italy and Romania in their remaining group games. Gerard Martin set for surgery Barcelona have two players with Spain at the tournament, with Gerard Martin and Pablo Torre both starting. Both were performing well, but would not make it to the end of the match due to injury, with Martin coming off at half-time, and Torre taken off 13 minutes into the second half. Image via Sport. Advertisement Martin had suffered a hand injury, and Jijantes report that he has suffered a break. The 23-year-old has flown back to Barcelona to undergo surgery – it is not yet clear how long he will be out for. The fact that he has left the Spain camp for surgery suggests his tournament with the under-21 side could be over though. Meanwhile Torre came off with muscle discomfort, and so far there has been no update on his injury either. Doubts about future Martin enjoyed a decent debut campaign for Barcelona under Hansi Flick, and was set to be Alejandro Balde's alternative next year too. Yet following interest from the Premier League, with three teams looking at him, it has emerged that the Blaugrana would be willing to cash in on Martin. The asking price is reportedly €12m. As a result, Barcelona are now on the lookout for potential left-back opportunities on the transfer market, should an offer for Martin arrive. Bayer Leverkusen's Alejandro Grimaldo has voiced a desire to return to the Blaugrana.

Kate Martin reflects upon first Caitlin Clark impression
Kate Martin reflects upon first Caitlin Clark impression In a recent recording of the "Bird's Eye View podcast with Sue Bird," former Iowa women's basketball guard Kate Martin spoke on her experience playing alongside Caitlin Clark when the two current WNBA stars were teammates on the Hawkeyes from 2020-24. Martin, who spent five years at Iowa, thanks to the extra year of eligibility granted due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, finished her tenure averaging 8.0 points per game on 46.4% from the floor, including 35.5% from 3-point territory, and 82.4% from the charity stripe through 139 starts in 163 games. Martin also averaged 4.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.1 blocks per contest throughout her career in Iowa City. Most notably, Martin's best offensive season at Iowa was during the 2023-24 campaign when she averaged 13.1 points per game on 50.7% from the floor, including 37.0% from beyond the arc, and 86.4% from the free-throw line, en route to the Hawkeyes' second consecutive appearance in the National Championship game. When Bird asked what her first impression of Clark was when the Hawkeyes recruited the eventual program-altering guard, Martin explained that she did not know much about Clark's skillset outside of film, but was amazed by her ability to live up to the hype. "Yeah, she had come on a couple of visits, and she was like a big name in Iowa. So I had heard about her. I wasn't from Iowa, so I didn't know as much, and that, like, All-Iowa Attack AAU program is, like, so big, and I'd never heard of it," Martin explained. "And so I had heard about this Caitlin Clark, and I was, like, watching videos of her just have like 40 points, averaging a million in high school, and I was like, 'oh, this girl thinks she's going to come here and rule the world.' And there she did, came in right away and ruled the world, and I was like, all right, here we go." Martin continued by explaining that she was in awe of Clark's ability to become an immediate game-changer on the court for the team during her freshman year and eventually alter the trajectory of the program moving forward. "I just remember you have that summer before, and she was doing things that I had never seen anybody do before. And as a freshman, to come in and have that kind of confidence, like, not everybody has that. I was like, I haven't really seen anything like this. And so we knew she was going to be outstanding. And then, yeah, at the beginning of the year, we had some big wins, and there were highs and lows that year for sure. But, you know, it took us a little bit to figure it out. But, yeah, it obviously turned out better than I could have ever expected or thought." With the two now in their second WNBA season, Hawkeyes fans can proudly watch both stars shine on their respective teams as Clark headlines the Indiana Fever and Martin provides a sharp-shooting offensive jolt off the bench for the Golden State Valkyries. Barcelona planning third summer signing due to possible Premier League sale
Barcelona are hoping to be busy this summer, but signings are likely to depend on what sales can be made during the upcoming transfer window. The club's well-documented financial woes means that players need to leave first, and a possible move could open the door to another arrival. It is no secret that Barcelona are targeting the signing of a new goalkeeper and left winger. Joan Garcia will be the new number one upon joining from Espanyol, while Luis Diaz is the club's primary target for the attacking position. Barcelona could sign a new left-back this summer And on top of these two targets, it has now been reported by Sport that Barcelona have stepped up efforts to sign a new left-back. Image via Glorioso 1904 Last week, it was reported that current backup left-back Gerard Martin could move to the Premier League this summer. The The 23-year-old, who made 46 appearances across all competitions last season, first attracted interest from Wolves, and now he is being pursued by AFC Bournemouth. Advertisement Barcelona are open to selling Martin, and they hope to receive €12m for him. And if a deal does go through, the idea is for a replacement to be signed, especially considering that Alex Valle has already been sold to Cesc Fabregas' Como. In the event of Martin's departure, Barcelona have started to consider left-back targets. And at this stage, the leading candidate to be sought is former La Masia player Alex Grimaldo. The 29-year-old has been excellent for Bayer Leverkusen since joining from Benfica two years ago, but with Xabi Alonso joining Real Madrid, he could be the latest player to leave the Bundesliga giants. Grimaldo is reported to have a release clause of €15m, which would be a bargain price for a player of his quality. It remains to be seen whether Barcelona make a serous effort to seek a deal, but for now, it is unlikely to happen unless Martin goes.
