Ahmedabad: The number of identified victims of the AI 171 crash on June 12 reached 259 on Monday, with two new identifications in the 24 hours ending 6pm.
According to officials, the number includes 253 individuals — 240 persons aboard along with 13 non-passengers — who were identified from DNA matches.
The remaining six were identified from their facial features, they added.
Dr Rakesh Joshi, medical superintendent of Civil Hospital, said that out of 259, the mortal remains of 256 have been handed over to family members. "The only three bodies remaining are of the UK nationals. While the mortal remains of two will be taken any time to the UK for the last rites, one family has informed us that they will take possession of the mortal remains on Wednesday," he said.
According to govt figures, out of 241 passengers who died in the crash and subsequent inferno at the medical hostel in the Meghaninagar area, 240 have been identified. The majority of those who lost their lives on the ground have also been identified. Sources said that "only a few" samples remain to be processed for DNA identification in labs in Gandhinagar.
Dr Joshi told the media that it is natural for the number of samples handed over to forensic experts to be higher than the deceased.

"Due to the condition of the bodies, it is likely that more than one sample of the same person may have been sent for analysis," he said.
The mortal remains handed over to the relatives include 73 from Ahmedabad, 29 from Anand, 24 from Vadodara, 12 from Surat, 11 from Kheda, 10 from London, and seven from Gandhinagar, among others. Among the passengers with domicile of a foreign nation, bodies of 49 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national had been handed over as of Monday evening. About 28 of the total mortal remains have been sent by air within India and outside, added Civil Hospital officials.

Marks of 55 Bangalore University students tampered with after portal security breach

Bengaluru: The marks of 55 students of Bangalore University (BU) were found to be tampered with in the Unified University and College Management System (UUCMS), after the login ID and password of the registrar (evaluation) were breached. The first-semester marks of Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) students from two private colleges in the city, as well as those from the Jnanabharati campus of the university, were found to be tampered with. Curiously, many of the students had already passed the exam, and the addition of one or two marks didn't make a difference. However, five students passed after the marks were tampered with. The changes were made in various subjects, including environmental sciences and computer architecture. "Usually, the registrar gets an OTP while changing the password (to log into UUCMS). However, in this case, the hackers were able to change the password and log in without OTP. The changes were made at night. In the morning, when I realised the password was changed, we immediately notified UUCMS. They gave a list of the students whose marks were changed," said registrar (evaluation) Srinivas Chowdappa. BU has formed an internal committee to probe the incident, and also decided to register a complaint with police. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ductless Air Conditioners Are Selling Like Crazy [See Why] Keep Cool Click Here Undo This is not the first time UUCMS was breached. In 2024, Bengaluru North University (BNU) faced a similar issue with marks getting tampered with. The Kolar district cybercrime and narcotics control police arrested three people in this regard. "We don't know why the marks of students who passed were tampered with. Only one or two marks were added for those students, making no real impact. It could be to confuse us. We'd know only after an inquiry, though. We've made sure the new marks won't be reflected anywhere, the old marks will be retained," he said. UUCMS officials didn't respond to calls. The portal, set up after the implementation of National Education Policy 2021 in the state, manages all functions in a higher educational institution, ranging from admission, fee payment, and declaration of exam results. "With hacking of UUCMS becoming a repeat affair, it's important for the higher education department to take note of it and heighten security measures. Else, where's the credibility of the portal and sanctity of exam?" asked a college assistant professor.

Right to free speech doesn't cover hate: SC notice to 5 states; Centre on Wazahat Khan's plea to club cases

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court stressed Monday that "hate speech" is not covered under freedom of expression, even as it restrained police from four states from arresting Wazahat Khan, who was instrumental in the arrest of social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli for her communal posts on Pahalgam killings. FIRs have been lodged against him for posts on X expressing hate against Hindus. On Khan's plea that the FIRs were in retaliation for his complaint against Panoli and his comments had been deleted, the bench said, "It is not so simple. All these comments are hate-mongering". Wazahat Khan through senior advocate D S Naidu told a bench of Justices K V Viswanathan and N Kotiswar Singh the FIRs against his client were lodged as a retaliation against his complaint to West Bengal police against Panoli, leading to her arrest. He said Khan had made these comments in 2023, had since deleted them, and even posted a video apologising to "Hindu brothers and sisters". Naidu said Khan is already in police and judicial custody in connection with two FIRs in West Bengal and pleaded for consolidation of the FIRs in one place as the SC had done in the past in many cases, when the FIRs have been lodged for the same offence. "He is perhaps reaping what he had sown" and learnt the lesson the hard way, the counsel said, mirroring Khan's repentance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? "Your apology says the FIRs were a retaliation to you lodging a complaint against the social media influencer. We do not know where we are heading. Incitement to violence may not be only physical violence. It could be many other forms of violence. Hate speeches take us nowhere," Justice Viswanathan said. He reminded Khan's counsel about a proverb - "A wound inflicted by fire may heal, but not the one inflicted with tongue". The bench issued notice to all five states, including West Bengal, and to the Union govt on Khan's plea for consolidating the FIRs in one state, or on the alternative, club the FIRs in one state at one place within the state concerned. The bench posted further hearing on July 14.

Pahalgam attack: Two locals helped Pakistani attackers for a few thousands

NEW DELHI: The two Kashmiris arrested by National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday not only harboured the three Pahalgam attackers for two days in their 'dhok' (hut) in Hill Area, located around 2 km from Baisaran, before the latter headed out to massacre 26 civilians but also tipped them off on the deployment of security personnel in and around the attack site "in return for a few thousand rupees". Sources aware of NIA probe told TOI that three Pakistani terrorists affiliated to Lashkar were sheltered by accused Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad Jothar in the seasonal 'dhok' on April 20 and 21, immediately preceding the fateful day. NIA had said on Sunday the accused "knowingly provided the Pakistani terrorists food, shelter & other logistical support". On Monday, Parvaiz and Bashir were produced before the NIA court in Jammu, which remanded them to NIA custody for five days. The agency said though the accused had disclosed the identities of the three attackers, it was carefully analysing a "large body of evidence" gathered, including eyewitness accounts, video footage, technical evidence and sketches released by J&K police. "NIA has not reached any conclusions. .. the identities and further details of the terrorists will be made public at an appropriate time," the agency said. A source told TOI that Parvaiz and Bashir were not just passive supporters but active facilitators in the April 22 terror act involving the gunning down of 25 tourists based on their religious identity. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mistura chinesa faz cabelo crescer e homem fica irreconhecível Resultados em 30 dias Undo "They studied the area domination exercises undertaken from time to time and the pattern of security deployment at the attack site in Baisaran, and shared the report or findings with the Pakistani terrorists, helping them plan their approach to the attack site, the actual massacre as well as the subsequent escape," an officer told TOI. "The accused were fully aware of the plans to hit tourists since Baisaran was teeming with visitors at the time. Since they were also operating pony rides in the area, they were fully aware of the police/security pickets at the attack site, the gap between consecutive area domination exercises and the pattern of deployment of troops at the site. Despite being aware of the terrorists' intentions, they willingly shared these details, making themselves active participants in the Pahalgam terror attack conspiracy," a source said. When confronted by NIA, Parvaiz and Bashir claimed that though they knew of plans to unleash a terror strike, they had no idea that tourists in Baisaran were the target. This explanation, however, has few takers. The accused admitted to having facilitated the terrorists in snuffing out 26 innocent lives in lieu of "chand hazaar rupaiye".
