Conduct checks on STPs like ED raids, Munde tells pollution control body
Addressing a joint meeting with industrialists and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board officials in Nashik, Munde also said industries must grow, but environmental protection has to be prioritised. "Just like the ED conducts raids, the Pollution Control Board must raid STP plants. Check whether the water is being treated properly before being discharged into rivers," Munde said. Addressing the growing concerns of pollution and the role of industry in safeguarding the environment, she said, "We are now facing a global crisis. Industries must grow, but environmental protection must be prioritised. Reducing pollution in zones like the red category is critical." She also highlighted the need for efficient water use and treatment. "Of the total water we use, only 48 per cent is treated, while 52 per cent is wasted. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched programmes like Namami Gange after recognising this challenge," Munde said. She further said that while industries expect all necessary support to operate, they also carry a responsibility. "The responsibility initially lies with the industries, and our department steps in after pollution occurs. We will follow up with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavia on the need for pollution control projects, though some of the burden must be borne by the industries themselves. The environment department does not have its own independent funding," she pointed out. Recalling her previous tenure as a minister during the Kumbh Mela, Munde noted the importance of clean water for religious events. "I was a minister during the last Kumbh Mela, and now I am again, as another Kumbh Mela approaches. Pilgrims take holy dips, and the water must be clean where saints and devotees bathe. We must raise funds for the environment just as CSR funds are used for temples and education," she said. She also said sustainable and permanent solutions for cleanliness must be put in place ahead of the event.

PNB ‘fraud': CBI seeks to record statement of Nirav Modi's brother-in-law who sought to become witness
Over a month after the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a supplementary chargesheet against Maiank Mehta, brother-in-law of fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi, the agency sought permission from the special court to record his statement, in a bid towards deciding his application to become an approver in the PNB fraud case. Mehta and his wife Purvi—Modi's sister—have become prosecution witnesses in the case filed by Enforcement Directorate (ED) and will be expected to depose against the accused, including Modi. They had claimed in 2020 that they wanted to distance themselves from Modi, and could provide 'substantial and important evidence' relevant to him and his dealings. They similarly sought to become witnesses in the CBI's case but their pleas are yet to be decided as the agency is yet to give its go-ahead. Mehta was named an accused in the supplementary chargesheet submitted before the court by the CBI in July, with the agency claiming that he played an active role in the conspiracy along with the other accused to transfer funds received from the Punjab National Bank gained allegedly through issuance of fraudulent Letters of Undertaking. This week, the CBI sought to record Mehta's statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which is recorded before a magistrate. The court has directed Mehta to remain present before it on August 11 for recording of his statement. If the CBI gives its no-objection to make him an approver, the court will then decide if he can be examined as a prosecution witness in the case, where his testimony including facts deposed against the accused, can be used as evidence. On July 3, the Bombay High Court had directed that the cognizance of the supplementary chargesheet filed against Mehta not be taken till his application to turn approver is not decided. The high court directed the special court to decide on the plea expeditiously. In its supplementary chargesheet, the CBI claimed that Mehta's role as one of the beneficiaries of the defrauded amount has surfaced. It said that in 2013, USD 81.09 million related to 43 LoUs issued by the Punjab National Bank were transferred to one company named Pacific Diamonds. The CBI alleged that in 2013, nearly 30 million USD from Pacific Diamonds were transferred to the savings account of Mehta, which he then transferred in 10 transactions to his sister Purvi. She claimed that she received these funds from Mehta as a gift. It was also claimed that Mehta was appointed nominee in accounts where transfer of funds related to the LOUs were made and had also claimed that Nirav Modi's father, Deepak Modi, had transferred USD 8.9 million to Mehta 'through their shell companies'. The trial in both the ED and CBI cases is yet to begin. Modi is currently undergoing extradition proceedings in the UK, while those from his firms and the PNB staff are out on bail. Purvi is a citizen of Belgium, while Mehta who resides in Hong Kong, is a citizen of the UK, and works with a jewellery firm.

Bengal Governor nod to minister Chandranath Sinha's prosecution in recruitment scam
West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose on Friday approved the prosecution of the state Correctional Services Minister, Chandranath Sinha, in connection with the school recruitment scam under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), a Raj Bhawan source confirmed.'Based on the documents presented before him, the governor has sanctioned the prosecution of Chandranath Sinha, Minister in Charge, Government of West Bengal, for the offence of Money Laundering related to the Primary Teachers Recruitment Scam case,' said the ED has filed a chargesheet against Sinha in a special court. According to protocol, any investigating agency requires permission from the concerned governor to prosecute a sitting minister, as the governor is the appointing authority. The investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, revealed the involvement of suspended TMC leader Partha Chatterjee, the then Education Minister, along with others, in a large-scale scam. Eligible and meritorious candidates were denied appointments as school teachers, while ineligible, lower-ranked and even failed candidates were recommended and appointed illegally in exchange for January 2023, during a raid at the residence of suspended TMC youth leader Kuntal Ghosh, the ED seized incriminating documents that identified agents involved in facilitating the recruitment of ineligible candidates. One document specifically named Chandranath Sinha, a sitting MLA and minister, alleging that he had referred several candidates. Recorded statements indicated payments were made to agents, including Minister Sinha, to secure these appointments.A search at Sinha's residence also resulted in the recovery of Rs. 41 lakh in unaccounted cash. Following this, Sinha was summoned multiple times by the ED for questioning. An ED source revealed that approximately Rs 1.5 crore in cash deposits were made into Sinha's bank accounts between 2016 and 2021. When questioned, Sinha failed to satisfactorily explain the sources of the recovered cash and Wednesday, the ED filed its sixth supplementary charge sheet in the primary teachers recruitment scam case. The 62-page document was submitted before the special court presided over by Judge Suvendu Saha. The charge sheet names 55 accused, including 26 individuals such as former Education Minister Partha Chatterjee, Arpita Mukherjee and Sujoy Krishna Bhadra. Bolpur MLA Chandranath Sinha is among the newly accused. The remaining 29 accused include various organisations linked to the scam, sources told India to investigation sources, Sinha acted as an agent in this corruption racket. His name is associated with 159 candidates for primary teacher posts. "It is clear from the statements of accused Kuntal Ghosh and Tapas Mandal that Chandranath Sinha recommended 159 candidates.
