I visited the lesser-known side of Paris with art ‘monsters', new museums and a soon-to-open winter village
OK, so it's not real. It's actually a colossal sculpture.

Measuring 100ft long, Monster has been created by artist Raymond Moretti from warped metals and unusual shapes.
The work of art is one of many I found during my travels around La Defense, a lesser-visited part of the French capital, which sits to the west of the city centre.
Initially a business district, La Defense may look a little structured and rigid at first glance, with skyscrapers positioned around a long plaza of greenery and pathways.
But don't be fooled. Explore a little deeper and you'll notice the area is filled with weird and wonderful art that transforms this region into an open museum.
And with more than 60 statues and installations dotted around, I went on my own artistic scavenger hunt.
Look directly up the street from the Arc de Triomphe and you'll spot La Defense's own masterpiece, Le Grande Arche — a giant building, shaped like a photo frame.
Then, around the corner from here, sits a giant bronze thumb sticking out of the ground.
And nearby there's a bright red spider protruding from the central plaza, as well as an upturned white Peugeot 406 balanced precariously on a lamp-post.
These certainly aren't things you would find in the Louvre, but that's what gives La Defense its charm and makes it an easy place to spend hours wandering around in.
There's also the newly-opened Zoo Museum, a particular highlight for me, with four floors dedicated to the street art community.
I'm a travel editor and this caravan park is the only family holiday I pay for every summer - it's better than 5-star resorts
Every inch, from walls to door frames, is decorated by more than 350 artists.
Some rooms are described as 'magic tricks' with the artist using perspective and 3D lenses to bring even more life to their work.
Some contributors are still anonymous, while others work for designers such as Desigual.
Away from the art scene, there is plenty else going on in La Defense.
The plaza is never short of fun, with pop-up bars and markets for each season.
This summer, it was home to the Garden Parvis — with free games of boules, a stage for live performers and open-air workshops.
By the end of the year, it will turn into a Winter Village with hundreds of wooden chalet stalls selling everything from vin chaud to raclette (an assortment of potatoes, meat and veggies smothered in melted, gooey cheese).
Of course, it's a sin to visit Paris and not take in some of its history, so I made sure to visit the Notre Dame cathedral.

Ducking and diving
The building only reopened in December after being wrecked by fire in 2019, and it has been magnificently resurrected.
I was talked and walked through everything, from the doors to the rafters, all thanks to a virtual reality headset.
Transported to another world, I was soon ducking and diving through holes in the wall, being sent into the sky through floating platforms and zooming through decades as if I was living them.
Luckily, La Defense is still well-positioned for exploring the rest of Paris. If you're travelling by Eurostar, simply hop on the new RER line and you'll reach Paris La Defense in just three stops.
To make things even easier, the train station is right in the middle of a giant Westfield shopping centre, Les 4 Temps — particularly handy when you've forgotten your toothpaste, have a shopping itch, or fancy a bite to eat at the food court.
There's a hotel within the centre, the 4H Hilton Paris La Defense, which is home to an excellent restaurant.
Try the veal with truffled mashed potatoes and don't miss the dessert trolley loaded with oozing chocolate gateaux and pretty-looking lemon tarts.
If you're into your music, you'll likely have already heard of La Defense thanks to its massive arena, which has recently hosted Beyonce's Cowboy Carter tour and Robbie Williams' Britpop concert.
So keep your eyes peeled for any upcoming gigs if you plan on visiting.
As an added bonus, due to the area's history as a business area, it is full to the brim with hotels, which cost a fraction of those in the main city.
I know where I'd rather splurge!

"Kisses @DavidBeckham," Victoria captioned the post and added a series of emojis including, a sun and love heart. Other photos in the series included Cruz showing off his football skills in front of his dad who used to play for Manchester United and Real Madrid. Cruz also showed off his toned figure and posed aboard the yacht wearing nothing but a pair of white Armani swimming trunks. David also posted plenty of pics from their summer trip, and praised one of the family's favourite restaurants, Chez Bruno. "Perfection at Chez Bruno , family run Truffle restaurant WOW," David captioned his own Instagram post which included pics of him getting a private kitchen tour and posing lovingly with his wife. The family holiday comes amid their rift with eldest son Brooklyn, 26, who was on his own Instagram account spruiking his latest venture. The photographer and chef showed off the newly arrived kit which is collaboration between his Cloud 23 hot sauce brand and Jefferson's Bourbon. Brooklyn showed the camera the Jefferson's Rye Manhattan to Brooklyn kit which includes ingredients to create a unique cocktail, including a bottle of bourbon and vermouth, a black cherry syrup pouch, a bottle of Cloud 23 hot sauce, coupe glasses and a bottle of aromatic bitters. "Dubbed the Brooklyn23, the cocktail combines the robust but smooth whiskey with a kick of fiery undertones from the hot sauce," according to the Jefferson's website. David Beckham sings with son Cruz as they reveal glimpse of lavish holiday With a feud dividing the family, Brooklyn has distanced himself from the Beckham clan in favour of his wife Nicola Peltz, and her family. He even missed out on multiple celebrations to mark David's 50th birthday – snubbing a lavish bash, a father-son fishing trip and a calm retreat in Bordeaux. The Beckham Family Feud April 2022: Brooklyn marries Nicola Peltz. Wedding Dress Controversy: Rumours begin circulating that there's tension between Nicola and Victoria Beckham after Nicola chooses not to wear a Victoria Beckham -designed wedding gown. Nicola later clarifies in August 2022 (and again in March 2023) that Victoria's atelier couldn't make the dress in time, but reports in May 2025 suggest Victoria actually changed her mind about making the dress. Post-Wedding (2022 onwards): Minimal interaction between Nicola and Victoria on social media, and noticeable absence of Nicola at key Beckham family events. Alleged Wedding "Hijack": In May 2025, a source claimed Victoria "ruined" part of the wedding by allegedly hijacking a dance with Marc Anthony, which was meant for Brooklyn and Nicola. Nicola reportedly ran from the room crying. March 2025: A resurfaced TikTok of Romeo and Cruz mimicking a "baby voice" (which fans associate with Nicola) sparks speculation of sibling shade. May 2025: David Beckham's 50th Birthday Snub: Brooklyn and Nicola are notably absent from David Beckham's 50th birthday celebrations in London, despite being invited. Reports suggest their absence was due to Brooklyn not wanting to be in the same room as Kim Turnbull, the girlfriend of Romeo who had previously been reported to have been dating Brooklyn, who David allegedly opted to have at the party over Nicola. Rumours emerge of a falling out between Brooklyn and his younger brother Romeo, reportedly due to Romeo's new girlfriend, DJ Kim Turnbull, who allegedly had a past connection with Brooklyn. Reports surface that the Beckham parents are "hurt and disappointed" that Brooklyn is "playing no part in family life." Sources claim that tensions between Brooklyn and Nicola and his parents are "definitely not beyond repair." June 2025: Brooklyn and Nicola reportedly enlist a "crisis team" similar to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for "reputation management" due to the growing media scrutiny. Cruz Beckham posts cryptic lyrics on Instagram that some interpret as a swipe at Brooklyn. July 2025: Reports indicate David and Victoria are "desperate" to reconcile with Brooklyn. Brooklyn publicly wishes his sister Harper a happy 14th birthday on Instagram, tagging Nicola, which is seen as a potential "olive branch" and a rare public message to his family amid the rumored rift. Brooklyn UNFOLLOWS his brothers Romeo and Cruz just 24 hours after his birthday message to Harper. Nicola quickly follows suit and also ditches the Beckham bros from her Instagram following. Romeo and Cruz are now also no longer following Brooklyn. They've even started a 'boat war' by showing off their time on Nicola's family's £85million superyacht in Saint-Tropez that comparitively dwarfs the Beckhams' . Brooklyn and Nicola also renewed their wedding vows after three years of marriage – with the Beckhams not in attendance. At the end of May, Brooklyn shared a video of him and Nicola riding on his motorbike, captioning it: 'My whole world. I will love you forever. I always choose you baby.' They'll also be missing from Victoria's upcoming Netflix documentary. 6

Maisie Smith reveals the moment she and boyfriend Max George were forced to go 'off grid' after a 'nightmare' fire ruined their holiday plans
Maisie Smith has recalled how her plans for a romantic holiday with her boyfriend Max George were thrown into chaos after a fire 'destroyed' their villa. The EastEnders star, 24, had plans for a lavish trip to a villa in the south of France with The Wanted star, 36. But in an appearance on Sunday Brunch, Maisie admitted she and Max went 'off grid' when they were forced to change their accomodation at the last minute, having learned the villa they'd booked had been 'destroyed' before they arrived. The actress didn't seem particularly enthused by the new place they'd stayed, as she was grilled about her trip by host Tim Lovejoy. Early in the show, Tim and co-host Simon Rimmer grilled Maisie on why they'd struggled to contact her prior to her appearance on the show. She then admitted there was another reason she hadn't been answering her phone, saying: 'It was the South of France, it wasn't really off-grid, it's quite a common holiday destination.' 'But there was a fire and everything was destroyed. The house we were supposed to be staying in, it was destroyed.' A surprised Tim then asked: 'So where did you stay,' and Maisie replied: 'In an airbnb, down the round from where we were supposed to be staying.' 'So all of your technical equipment was destroyed?' quizzed Tim as Maisie told him: 'No, we were on a lake.' As Tim asked whether Maisie 'fished,' she replied: 'No but my boyfriend did?' Tim seemed to notice that Maisie wasn't enthralled by her recent French break, as she awkwardly said: 'If you like to fish it was great... but if you didn't...' The conversation was then cut short as the rest of the guests began giggling, before Tim moved the chat on to another guest. The couple have been inseparable since making their romance Instagram official in August 2022. Since leaving EastEnders in 2022, Maisie has starred in a string of stage roles, including Strictly Ballroom, and earlier this year she and Max starred together in the arena tour of Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds: The Spirit of Man, In December, Max was fitted with a pacemaker after his mum Babs realised he had 'turned blue' and pushed for him to go to A&E. He feared he would die, so at the time wrote out a will in his phone. Max, who has been sober for over four years after previous liver issues, reflected on his journey after the op. The Wanted singer explained that alcohol wasn't a factor in his condition, saying he gave up drinking after doctors flagged concerns about his liver following years of heavy partying on tour. The Glad You Came hitmaker noted it is all a 'mystery' what has happened to him, although doctors have been able to eliminate some possible causes.

I swapped homes with a total stranger from Instagram to save money while traveling
A woman who swapped homes with a total stranger on Instagram to save money on hotel costs while she was traveling has shared the highs and lows of the experience. Sara Holt, 27, from Copenhagen, was planning a trip to Paris, France, and got fed up with the eye-watering prices of hotels and Airbnbs. Inspired by the Cameron Diaz-lead movie The Holiday, she decided to turn to social media to try to find someone living in the European city who might exchange abodes with her. She shared a video of her studio apartment on Instagram and received offers from people all over the world. And she ultimately switched with a girl living in the heart of Paris. She flew out on July 16 and stayed for a week – enjoying everything the city of lights had to offer for a fraction of the price. 'Travelling is expensive but a lot of the time, it is the accommodation that really breaks the bank,' she told Luxury Travel Daily recently. 'With home swapping, you really only have to pay for the transportation, which is a big perk when trying to save some money. 'Since watching The Holiday for the first time, I've always wanted to try it.' The 2006 flick - which also starred Jude Law, Kate Winslet, and Jack Black - followed two strangers, one from a quiet English village and the other from star-studded Hollywood, who decided to trade homes in an attempt to spice up their lives. In addition to saving money, there were a load of other benefits that came with living in someone's home rather than staying at a hotel. 'I was so happy arriving in her flat in Paris. It looked amazing, very homey and she had cleaned and laid out a list with local recommendations as well as a welcome gift of wine, soaps and chocolate,' Sara recalled. 'It was a bit strange to live in someone else's space but it quickly felt very homey.' The content creator estimates she saved $800 on accommodation fees – and all in all, she only paid $650 for the entire trip, including flights, food, drinks and shopping. She loved the experience so much that she now can't imagine travelling any other way. Sara said: 'It was great to have your own kitchen and everything you need on hand, which is not the case in a hotel. Sara flew out on July 16 and stayed for a week – enjoying everything the city of lights had to offer for a fraction of the price 'Living in her area had a very local feel as well, which was great. It was more like trying "everyday life" in Paris instead of a holiday. 'It was just perfect. We were keeping in touch all week, asking questions and sending each other recommendations. 'It was like having a guide ready in your pocket the whole time. The whole thing felt very wholesome.' Sara added that the girl living in her apartment left it 'spotless,' in fact, it was 'almost better than when she left.' But there were some downsides. Particularly, she admitted that she was worried knowing there was no second party involved to help if something went wrong in her temporary home. 'I was a bit more worried than usual about keeping her space in order – as there is not second party involved, I really didn't want to break anything or lose her keys – stuff like that,' she explained. 'I was a bit nervous the months leading up to it, that one of us would have to cancel after the other person had already booked flights. 'There's no refund policy when you just swap with someone outside of the platforms. Luckily that didn't happen!' In addition to saving money, there were a load of other benefits that came with living in someone's home rather than staying at a hotel. The apartment she stayed in is pictured Despite some initial nerves about swapping her $950-a-month studio flat in Denmark with a stranger, the whole week went off without a hitch. Sara concluded: 'The money saved was definitely a bonus but the real win was feeling like a local and having that insider experience. 'I'd encourage anyone curious about home swapping to just take the leap. It's such a unique way to travel and connect with people. 'It's not just about saving money – it's about the stories you collect and the memories you make in a home that isn't your own.'
