Mets planning for now and later as Gregory Soto trade nets potential postseason weapon
The Mets are playing simultaneous games as the trade deadline approaches, trying to bulk up to make the playoffs/win the division and attempting to improve their World Series odds. The addition of Gregory Soto on Friday threaded that needle in their view — a reliever for now and later. The Mets have nothing assured, but have pretty strong odds on making the postseason for consecutive years for just the third time in their history and – in the best outcome – winning the NL East for the first time since 2015 with one of the two best NL records to gain a first-round bye. They have to go through Philadelphia to win the division and have seven games remaining against the Phillies. For most of this season, they lacked a lefty reliever they would feel comfortable unleashing on Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. But Brooks Raley made his return after Tommy John surgery on July 19 and so far, so good on how he has looked, and they obtained the hard-throwing Soto from the Orioles for pitching prospects Wellington Aracena and Cameron Foster.

The Yankees and Phillies are both desperate for wins, which should make Saturday's battle between the two historic franchises quite a spectacle. While the Yankees have plenty of work to do to make up ground on the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East, the Phillies are locked in a neck-and-neck tussle with the Mets for supremacy in the NL East. It's rare for an interleague matchup at this point of the season to carry stakes this high, so enjoy the show! What our Post expert thinks about Yankees vs. Phillies on Saturday On paper, it's hard to argue against the Phillies having a decided pitching edge Saturday. Ranger Suarez has been terrific for Philadelphia this season, while Marcus Stroman has yet to find any consistency for the Yankees since moving to the Bronx in 2024. Stroman has put together two strong starts in a row coming into Saturday, but it's hard to be confident that he will be able to replicate that output. 21+. Gambling problem? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. Last Dance – Five Veteran Inter Milan Stars Set For Final Season Before A ‘Revolution' Next Summer
This season will be the 'last dance' for five veteran players in the last years of their contracts with Inter Milan. Today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, identify Yann Sommer, Francesco Acerbi, Stefan de Vrij, Matteo Darmian, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan as players set to depart next summer. Last season, Inter had the oldest squad in Serie A in terms of average age. Moreover, the Nerazzurri regularly started matches with a starting eleven whose average age was north of thirty. Clearly, therefore, it is not overly surprising that the single biggest priority in the summer transfer window for Inter has been to bring that average age down. That does not, however, mean that there has been a major exodus of any of the aging players. On the contrary, the veterans have all stuck around. But according to the Corriere dello Sport, that won't be for long. 'Last Dance' For Five Veteran Players At Inter Milan SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – JUNE 25: Francesco Acerbi #15 of FC Internazionale Milano walks on the field prior to the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group E match between FC Internazionale Milano and CA River Plate at Lumen Field on June 25, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by) In goal, Yann Sommer has one more year left to go on his contract at Inter. And the Swiss veteran will see out his deal, despite having been linked with Galatasaray this summer. However, there is little indication that Inter will offer an extension to Sommer. The former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach keeper will turn 37 this coming season. And Josep Martinez is waiting in the wings to replace him. Similarly, all of Stefan de Vrij, Matteo Darmian, and Francesco Acerbi are still pillars of Inter's defense. De Vrij, in particular, has been with Inter since 2018. But all three are out of contract with Inter at the end of next June. And the same is true of midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Armenian has been a reliable servant to the Nerazzurri, but turns 37 in January. Next summer, when all of these players' contracts expire, the Corriere anticipate that there will be nothing short of a 'revolution' in Inter's squad.
