Atletico's title hopes take another hit in 0-0 draw at Alaves
VITORIA-GASTEIZ, Spain - Atletico Madrid's fading hopes of winning the LaLiga title suffered a potentially grievous blow on Saturday as they were held to a goalless draw by relegation-threatened Alaves at the Mendizorrotza Stadium.
Atletico remained third in the standings with 67 points, nine behind leaders Barcelona who travel to Real Valladolid later on Saturday. Alaves moved up to 16th, three points clear of the relegation places.
The first half was a cagey affair without a single shot on target, the most notable moment coming when Atletico forward Julian Alvarez was dismissed for planting a high boot on Facundo Garces, though the red card was overturned after the referee consulted the pitchside monitor.
Atleti coach Diego Simeone made five changes in the second half in a bid to shake up the game, and although the substitutions sparked the contest into life, Atletico were unable to find a winner despite creating a number of late chances. REUTERS

Gauff, Sabalenka to resume rivalry in bid to secure place on Wimbledon merry-go-round
FILE PHOTO: A combination picture shows Coco Gauff of the U.S. and Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka ahead of the French Open ladies final. June 6, 2025. REUTERS/File Photo BENGALURU - The Wimbledon women's throne has turned into tennis' version of musical chairs with new champions in the last seven years and all signs point to another one as Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff resume their simmering rivalry on the pristine lawns of London. The All England Club has not crowned a repeat champion since 2016 when Serena Williams captured the 22nd of her 23 Grand Slam trophies and the chances of injury-hit holder Barbora Krejcikova rediscovering her miraculous level from 12 months ago are slim. Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova, whose names precede Krejcikova on the iconic honours board, remain dangerous players on the sport's fastest surface but all eyes will be on the women who contested an error-strewn but enthralling French Open final. American Gauff prevailed in this month's Roland Garros title clash against Belarusian Sabalenka and the 21-year-old will head to the venue of her breakthrough as a teenager in 2019 eager to finally conquer grass after claycourt and hardcourt success. Gauff did not enjoy a good start to the grass swing after suffering a stunning second-round loss to Wang Xinyu in Berlin, but former Wimbledon quarter-finalist CoCo Vandeweghe said the two-time major champion will learn from the experience. "I don't think this shakes her confidence," Vandeweghe told the Tennis Channel. "This isn't going to be her best surface, but you know what she's going to do? She's going to take this loss and really work on herself. That's what we've seen time and time again from Gauff. She's the ultimate competitor. "That's what we always see from Coco, as much as we talk about the negative aspects of what goes wrong in her game, what we don't talk about enough is what goes right." POINT TO PROVE Sabalenka, who was beaten by Gauff in another long final at the U.S. Open two years ago, will also have a point to prove in London with the three-time major winner looking to make up for lost time after missing last year's Wimbledon with injury. Since then she has contested three successive Grand Slam finals, triumphing in New York last September but failing to add to her major trophy haul with runner-up finishes in Melbourne and Paris. Despite being one of the most consistent players over the last two years, marked by a rise to the top spot in the world rankings, Sabalenka has yet to solve the puzzle that grass poses having lost both of her finals on the surface. The 27-year-old reached the Berlin semi-finals before crashing to eventual champion Vondrousova and will be eager to quickly rediscover the form that can devastate her opponents. "The grass season is a short one, only a few tournaments before Wimbledon," Sabalenka said after beating Rybakina in the Berlin quarter-finals. "I wanted to play some matches, I wanted to remember how to play on grass and I'm happy I got what I did." Madison Keys became the latest entrant into the Grand Slam champions' club with an inspired run to the Australian Open title earlier this year and the stage is set for the big-hitting American to prove she is no one-hit wonder. Vondrousova will have a similar mindset after the former world number six, ranked 164 at the start of the Berlin tune-up event, became the lowest-ranked champion in the tournament's history after dismantling Keys and Sabalenka along the way. Iga Swiatek will also hope for the rub of the green after a torrid spell following her short ban for a doping violation last year as she looks to go past the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the first time and add to her collection of five major titles. Euro 2025 a 'fresh start' for youthful England, says James
The Women's Euro 2025 campaign will be more like a fresh start than a title defence for England with the team full of young players looking to prove themselves on the big sage, forward Lauren James said. James, who made her senior international debut just over a month after England won the European title in 2022, has recovered from the hamstring injury which sidelined her since April in time for next month's continental campaign. "A fresh start, a bit like a new era ... hungry girls wanting to do well," the 23-year-old told The Guardian. 'It's not really about defending a title because it's a completely different team. This team's got a lot of youth in it and this will be some people's first big tournament," added James, who has scored seven goals in 27 appearances for England. England begin their Group D campaign against France on July 5, followed by games against Netherlands and Wales. The tournament runs from July 2-27. Inzaghi proud as Al-Hilal join 'the best' in Club World Cup knockout stage
FILE PHOTO: Jun 22, 2025; Washington, District of Columbia, USA; Al Hilal FC head coach Simone Inzaghi watches play against FC Salzburg in the first half during a group stage match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup at Audi Field. Mandatory Credit: Amber Searls-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal became the only Asian side to reach the Club World Cup's knockout stages with a 2-0 win over Pachuca on Thursday, finishing their Group H campaign unbeaten and setting up a round-of-16 meeting with Manchester City. Al-Hilal showed they could compete with the best teams in the world when they held Real Madrid and Red Bull Salzburg to draws in their first two games under new coach Simone Inzaghi. They have conceded just one goal in their three matches, sharing the best defensive record of the group stage with Paris St Germain and Monterrey. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Al-Hilal, majority owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, have signed a string of world-class players over the last two years including Neymar, Malcom, Ruben Neves, Marcos Leonardo and Aleksandar Mitrovic. Although Neymar has left the club and Mitrovic remains sidelined with a calf injury, the depth of the squad has allowed Al-Hilal to weather the pressure of the big stage. KEY QUOTES Al-Hilal coach Simone Inzaghi: "Our goal was to achieve (being in) the group of the best teams in the world. "It was not an easy task, but the team was well united. It fought during the three games for a great objective ... we were not coming here just to have fun, we were coming here to play a World Cup and we wanted to reach this stage. "Now we'll have to play against Manchester City ... it's one of the greatest teams in the world. These are the games where you can improve and you can mature as a team, so I'm very proud."
