New NCERT module on Partition horrors partly blames Congress, sparks row
The text refers to the 1940 Lahore Resolution, where Muhammad Ali Jinnah claimed that Hindus and Muslims belonged to 'two different villages, philosophy, social customs, and literature.'The module argues that the British initially sought to keep India united by offering dominion status, but Congress refused this proposal.GANDHI, PATEL AND NEHRU ON PARTITIONThe module quotes Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as saying that the situation in India had become explosive: 'India had become a battlefield and it was better to partition the country than to have a civil war.'It cites Gandhi's stance, noting that he opposed partition but would not resist Congress's decision through violence. The text states: 'He said that he could not be a party to the partition, but he would not stop Congress from accepting it with violence.'Eventually, Jawaharlal Nehru and Patel accepted partition. Gandhi later persuaded the Congress Working Committee on June 14, 1947, to also agree to partition.
BLAME PLACED ON MOUNTBATTENThe module strongly criticises Lord Mountbatten for preponing the transfer of power. It says: 'Mountbatten had announced June 1948 as the date of transfer of power but later preponed it to August 1947.'It points out that the hasty demarcation of boundaries caused chaos: 'In many places, people did not even know by August 15, whether they were in India or Pakistan.'
POLITICAL BACKLASHThe Congress has hit out at NCERT's interpretation. Party spokesperson Pawan Khera said: 'Burn this document as it doesn't tell the truth. Partition happened due to nexus between Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim League.""RSS is danger to this nation. Idea of partition was first propagated by Hindu Mahasabha in 1938. It was repeated by Jinnah in 1940," he said in a press conference. The clash over NCERT's partition module has now turned into a fresh political flashpoint, with competing narratives about who was responsible for India's division, and how India's history should be taught in classrooms.- Ends

Sikh family attacked in MP's Bhind, protesters seek action against cops
A non-resident Indian (NRI) family from the United Kingdom was pelted with stones following a dispute with police in Bhind in Madhya Pradesh, leaving two children injured and their car damaged, an official said on Saturday. The incident took place on Thursday on the Station Road near Fatehpur village in Gohad tehsil, following which the Sikh community, to which the family belongs, held protests, including near the Gohad Chauraha police station, seeking stringent action against those involved. Local Congress MLA Keshav Desai joins the protest in Gohad, about 40 km from the district headquarters, says he will ensure the constable is booked and the SHO is transferred. The protesters, who wanted an FIR against constable Kuldeep Kushwaha and transfer of the station house officer, called off the stir after superintendent of police Asit Yadav assured them of strict action following a fair probe, local Sikh community leader Karan Singh said. Kushwaha was sent to police lines, SP Yadav said while denying that the constable was taken off field duty on Friday after the NRI family contacted embassy authorities in Delhi. 'The two children sustained only bruises. The constable was not directly involved in the incident. First, we will register an FIR against unidentified people who indulged in the act. Action will be taken on the basis of further investigation. This is a rash and negligent act. They threw stones to stop the vehicle, which resulted in its windows getting damaged, as well as injuries to those inside,' the SP said. 'The attackers are being identified. It was not an attack. It was a miscommunication between the two (NRI and policeman). Both had a heated argument. The two sides did not know each other. I have spoken to the NRI family,' the SP added. Local Congress MLA Keshav Desai, who joined the protest in Gohad, about 40 km from the district headquarters, said he would ensure the constable is booked and the SHO is transferred. 'Dr Vikramjeet Singh, his wife Rajveer Kaur, daughter Ravneet Kaur and son Rohanpreet Singh came to Fatehpur village on August 14. Fatehpur is Rajveer Kaur's native village. Kushwaha, dressed in civil clothes, argued with them while their car was parked on Station Road to buy fruits and sweets,' Desai said. 'Kushwaha recorded a video of the vehicle, to which Dr Singh objected. Kushwaha threatened Dr Singh, who, possibly out of fear, tried to speed away. His vehicle was stopped by unidentified persons and his family attacked with sticks and stones near a dhaba. The children were injured and the vehicles windows were damaged,' Desai added.

GST 2.0 to offer treatment for other pain points too
The proposed goods and services tax (GST) 2.0, hammered out over months of extensive deliberations, will go beyond the mere reduction of rates. It will be a deep-dive overhaul of the indirect tax framework that was rolled out eight years ago, officials said. The revamp will seek to bring an end to classification disputes , duty inversions and procedural issues to provide stability and clarity to businesses, they said. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency The exercise will also be accompanied by a push for greater alignment and coordination between the state and central tax authorities on assessment, audit and investigation to ensure that businesses do not face multiple actions for the same matter, the officials said. The GST Council , the apex decision-making body on the levy, is likely to meet September 18-19 to take up the proposed changes, they said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What If Your Neck Is Causing Your Ear Ringing? Live Events GST 2.0 will also reduce the tax burden by having only two major slabs — 5% and 18%. 'Rate rationalisation is one part of the proposal, but it goes much beyond that… This is an opportunity for a wider reform of the structure,' one of the officials told ET. Divergent decisions by various courts on the taxation of the same items had given rise to ambiguity, he said. Other challenges related to inverted duty structures and input tax credit are being addressed through this exercise in a comprehensive manner, the person said. 'GST with multiple changes every now and then had become a work in progress,' another official said. Special levy for sin goods 'The proposed exercise aims to revamp and simplify the structure in a holistic and comprehensive way instead of a piecemeal exercise,' official said. The recast also aims to resolve classification disputes that have arisen due to different varieties of similar goods having been placed in various slabs. The official said no differentiation would be made on account of divergent prices for the same good as a principle. Issues related to whether a namkeen is extrusion-based or non-extrusion-based or whether a product is sweet or savoury — thus attracting different tax rates — will not arise following the changes. The Centre, in its proposal, has sought to scrap the 12% and 28% slabs, retaining only the 5% and 18% rates. Most of the items of daily consumption, those used in farming or related to health are expected to be in the 5% bracket. A special rate of 40% will be introduced for about half-adozen items that will include so-called sin goods and luxury cars. 'We have examined each item and issues around it,' the second official said. 'The idea was to look ahead and not how it was done in the past, line by line… It was an intensive and rigorous exercise.' The proposal has already been sent to the group of ministers (GoM) that the GST Council had set up on rate rationalisation. The panel will deliberate on the Centre's proposal in the coming week. The GoM's recommendations will be placed before the GST Council. The Centre will hold discussions with the states on the proposal, which has the potential to perk up domestic consumption and bolster growth. Officials are hopeful that the timelines can be met to meet the festive season shopping date.

NCERT module blames Jinnah, Congress for Partition, triggers row
NCERT NEW DELHI: NCERT's newly released Partition Horrors Remembrance Day modules have triggered a political storm by explicitly naming Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Congress and then Viceroy Lord Mountbatten as "culprits" behind India's division in 1947. The supplementary modules - separate versions for classes VI-VIII and IX-XII - are not part of regular textbooks but designed for discussions, debates and projects. They open with PM Narendra Modi's 2021 message declaring Aug 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day: "Partition's pains can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. " In a section titled "Who Was Responsible for Partition?", the secondary-stage module states: "Historically, three actors were responsible for Partition: 1. Jinnah, who demanded it. 2. The Congress, which accepted it. 3. Mountbatten, who formalised and implemented it." The text criticises Mountbatten for advancing the transfer of power from June 1948 to Aug 1947. "Due to it many essential arrangements that should have preceded Partition were never completed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite?
