EV sales in India projected to grow 40% to 1.38 lakh units in 2025: Report
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are expected to continue dominating the Indian EV market in 2025, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are projected to account for only 0.1 per cent of sales. The report indicates that fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) have not yet entered the Indian market and BEVs will continue to lead in the near term.
'SUVs and sub-compact SUVs drive the growth of

,' the report noted. As per 2024 data, Tata Punch, Tata Tiago, Tata Nexon, MG Comet, and MG Windsor were the top five EV models in terms of unit sales. Tata Motors led OEM sales in 2024, followed by JSW MG Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra, BYD India, and PCA India (Citroen).
The forecast for 2030 shows that EV sales could reach close to 7 lakh units under a baseline scenario. The report identifies Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and MG Motor as the leading competitors in the space, operating with different business models.
'EV models will have driver-assist features in premium segments in the near term, however, in the long-term autonomous fleets will operate in gated communities,' the report stated. It further noted that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will have to be flexible in their strategies depending on market conditions and charging infrastructure.
The report highlights that the Indian EV ecosystem has evolved with the support of various government initiatives such as FAME I, FAME II, Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, PM eBus Sewa, and PM eDrive. The FAME I scheme launched in April 2015 with a budget of ₹795 crore focused on early adoption, followed by FAME II in April 2019 with a budget of ₹11,500 crore to support mass adoption. The PLI scheme introduced in 2021 aims at manufacturing localisation with a ₹44,000 crore outlay.
'Government support is not limited to EV sales but is also focusing on all type of applications such as e2W, e3W, eBuses and charging infrastructure,' the report said.
According to the report, India currently has over 25,500 public charging stations hosting about 60,000 connectors. Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Tamil Nadu account for the highest number of installed EV chargers. To support future EV penetration, the country will require one charging connector for every five EVs by 2030.
On the manufacturing side, the report lists critical challenges such as dependence on imported raw materials for batteries including lithium, nickel and cobalt, limited domestic cell manufacturing capability, and high reliance on battery management systems and power electronics from Chinese, Japanese, and Korean firms.
The report also outlines that battery recycling, advanced power electronics, 800V architecture, vehicle-to-grid integration, battery swapping systems, and inductive charging are among the next set of technologies to watch in India's EV transition.
The EV market in India is also expected to see the introduction of new technologies such as range extenders and hybrid fuel solutions combining ethanol and battery. The report cites strong indications of the introduction of PHEVs and extended range EVs (eREVs) in the Indian market.

S&P Global upgrades credit ratings of SBI, HDFC Bank, Tata Capital, among 10 financial institutions
Global credit rating giant, S&P Global Ratings, on Friday, 15 August 2025, upgraded the long-term issuer credit ratings for seven Indian banks and three financial institutions, one day after increasing India's sovereign credit rating, reported the news agency PTI. State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank Ltd, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Union Bank of India, and Indian Bank are the seven Indian banks whose credit ratings were upgraded by S&P Global. According to the agency report, Bajaj Finance, Tata Capital, and L&T Finance were the three finance companies which also received a credit rating upgrade on Friday. 'India's financial institutions will continue to ride the country's good economic growth momentum. These entities will benefit from their domestic focus and structural improvements in the system, such as in the recovery of bad loans,' said S&P Global, cited by the news agency. S&P Global expects that Indian banks will maintain adequate asset quality, good profitability, and enhanced capitalisation over the next one to two years. 'We expect India's banks to maintain adequate asset quality, good profitability, and enhanced capitalisation over the next 12-24 months. This is despite some pockets of stress,' said the ratings agency, highlighting that the credit risk in the system has reduced. According to the agency report, S&P Global on Thursday, 14 August 2025, upgraded India's credit rating to 'BBB' after more than 18 years, as it expects India's sound economic fundamentals to underpin growth momentum over the next two to three years. The company also said monetary policy settings have become increasingly conducive to managing inflationary expectations. Our sovereign rating on India caps the ratings on many Indian financial institutions. This is due to the sovereign's direct and indirect influence on financial institutions operating in the country, said S&P, according to the news report. It also said that the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) has improved the payment culture and rule of law in India. The code, introduced in 2016, has tilted the balance in favour of the creditors. It has also promoted a credit culture that encourages restructuring of going-concern entities. On Thursday, S&P Global Ratings also raised the credit ratings on Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd. (ONGC), Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd., NTPC Ltd., and Tata Power Co. Ltd. to 'BBB' from 'BBB—'. The outlook is stable. S&P Global Ratings also raised its long-term issuer credit ratings on the Export-Import Bank of India (India Exim) and Indian Railway Finance Corp. (IRFC) to 'BBB' from 'BBB-'.

Indians now have to pay more for ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans: Check new prices
OpenAI has quietly raised the price of ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans in India. Previously, ChatGPT users in India who wanted access to advanced features had to pay in dollars, but now the company has introduced these paid plans in Rupees. While it is now easier for ChatGPT users to subscribe to its paid plans, Indian customers will have to pay significantly more than they used to. To give you a quick recap, ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscription plans were priced at $20 and $200, which approximately amounted to Rs 1,750 and Rs 17,500, respectively. But now that OpenAI has introduced Indian pricing for these plans, ChatGPT users will have to shell out Rs 1,999 and Rs 19,900. The increased prices are also applicable to those looking to subscribe to the company's Team and Business plans will also have to pay more than they previously did. This means both ChatGPT Plus and Pro users will have to pay around 14 per cent more every month to access the AI chatbot's advanced features. When OpenAI CEO Sam Altman visited India last year, several startup founders and developers had pointed out that the high cost associated with ChatGPT paid plans was one of the barriers to wider adoption. The AI startup was also reportedly working on a much cheaper Go plan, which was expected to be announced alongside GPT-5, but there are no signs of the pocket-friendly plan till now. ChatGPT is quite popular amongst Indians, but other players like Perplexity AI and Google Gemini are offering access to their paid plans for free to customers and students. While Perplexity is giving away one year of free Pro access to Airtel users, Google's premium Gemini AI plans come with some benefits, like additional cloud storage and services like YouTube Premium. According to app intelligence firm Appfigures, ChatGPT has generated more than $2 billion in global consumer spending since its launch in May 2023. Compared to other AI chatbots like Claude, Copilot and Grok, ChatGPT has earned more than 30 times the combined lifetime spending of its rivals. Figures also reveal that, in 2025, ChatGPT's mobile app made $1.35 billion, recording 673 per cent more than the previous year. To give you an estimate, the app is generating almost $193 million per month.
