Air India Ahmedabad air plane crash: Efforts on to recover black box, say officials
Efforts are on recover the black box of the Air India flight AI 171 which crashed in Ahmedabad as its analysis will provide vital clues about what triggered the disaster, said police and Fire Brigade officials on Friday (June 13, 2025).
Ahmedabad Fire Brigade officials informed that a team with specialized equipment like metal cutters has been deployed to search the black box in the wreckage at the accident site in Meghaninagar near the airport, where the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft crashed on Thursday afternoon.
"Work is ongoing to find the black box," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Kanan Desai told PTI.
She clarified that no such thing as a digital video recorder of the flight has been found.
Sources said DVR (digital video recorder) of CCTV cameras of BJ Medical College hostel, where the plane crashed, has been taken into custody by police.
A DVR is an electronic device designed to record and store video footage from CCTV cameras.
Fire department officials said they have been asked to assist in locating the black box of the plane.
"Our team is helping forensic and civil aviation experts in retrieving the black box. The team is equipped with specialized tools such as metal cutters," Deputy Chief Fire Officer Dhrumit Gandhi informed.
A black box is a small device that records information about an aircraft during its flight. It helps in investigation of aviation accidents.
The London-bound Air India plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed in Meghaninagar minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 13.39 pm.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft (AI171) could be seen from afar, losing altitude rapidly and crashing in a ball of fire that sent plumes of thick black smoke spiralling up in the air.

AHMEDABAD: Authorities have so far identified 31 victims of the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad through DNA testing and 12 families have claimed the mortal remains so far, an official said on Sunday. The process of DNA matching of former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani was also underway, Dr Rajnish Patel, professor of surgery at the government-run B J Medical College here said. As many as 230 teams were formed to coordinate with the victims' families, officials earlier said. The victims included 241 of the 242 passengers and crew members on board the London-bound flight.

DNA testing has confirmed the identities of 31 victims from the June 12th Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, and 12 families have so far claimed the remains, authorities said on Sunday (June 15, 2025). Medical College and Civil Hospital, said DNA matching is still underway for several victims, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was among those killed in the crash. A total of 242 people — passengers and crew — were on board the London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner when it crashed minutes after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon. Earlier on Saturday, Alok Kumar Pandey, Relief Commissioner and Secretary, Revenue Department, the state government had established contact with the families of 11 foreign nationals. 'A total of 230 teams have been formed to establish contact and hand over the mortal remains to the families. We began handing over the bodies today,' he said. Pandey added that the victims from Gujarat hailed from 18 districts and that the administration was also in touch with diplomats of other countries. The senior IAS officer said death certificates were being issued on the spot to avoid any inconvenience to the families. 'Each body will be escorted to its native place in an ambulance with police protection. Grief counsellors are also being provided to help families cope with the trauma,' he added.

Former CM Vijay Rupani's body yet to be identified after Air India plane crash
The identification process of the body of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is still in process as the hospital administration has not been able to match his DNA as of now, as informed by Additional Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital Dr. Rajnish Patel. Rupani was among the 241 victims of the June 12 crash of AI 171 plane crash in Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787 flight, which was bound for London's Gatwick airport, crashed soon after takeoff. A total of 242 people, including 230 passengers, 10 crew members and two pilots, were on board flight AI 171. "The identification process of the body of former CM Vijay Rupani is still underway. We have still not been able to match the DNA. We will inform the press as soon as we find his body", Rajnish Patel told reporters. Patel further informed that a total of 31 DNAs have been identified as of now, and 12 bodies have been handed over to their respective family members. We are waiting for others to come and collect the remains of their relatives", he told reporters. Earlier today, the Ahmedabad hospital authorities confirmed the death of four more students of BJ Medical College and their relatives, due to which the death toll of the AI 171 plane crash rose to 250. Dhaval Gameti, FAIMA Vice President and President of Junior Doctors Association, BJ Medical College, said that four medical students and their relatives have died so far. He further stated that out of 20 admitted students, 11 have been discharged, and eight to nine people are still under treatment. "Four medical students have died in the incident. Including resident doctors and their relatives, the total deaths are nine. Twenty students were admitted, of whom 11 have been discharged eight to nine people are going through the treatment...." Gameti said, addressing mediapersons here.
