Malaysia to host Asian parliamentarians' population and development secretariat

The decision was made at the 15th General Assembly of the AFPPD, held in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, where Malaysia's bid, led by Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Chair of AFPPD Malaysia and the works minister, received overwhelming support from all member states. 'This win reflects Malaysia's strong commitment to promoting sustainable development, gender equality, health rights and the welfare of people across Asia and the Pacific,' said AFPPD in a statement today. Meanwhile, Nanta in his posting on Facebook expressed Malaysia's honour at the trust placed in the country by its regional counterparts. 'Hosting the AFPPD Secretariat is a recognition of Malaysia's proactive role in championing critical issues such as youth empowerment, gender equality, ageing populations, and reproductive health. 'We are committed to ensuring that the Secretariat will serve as a dynamic and inclusive platform to foster dialogue, collaboration, and impactful action across our region,' he said. According to the statement, the AFPPD Secretariat will be relocated from Japan to Kuala Lumpur, where it will support parliamentarians in addressing population and development challenges over the next five years. It will coordinate programmes, research, and capacity-building to equip lawmakers with knowledge and policy tools. Malaysia, which has also been granted the privilege of leading the AFPPD's Secretariat, has unanimously nominated Ipoh Timor MP, Howard Lee, to take up this leadership role. In addition to the Secretary General from Malaysia, the leadership includes a Chairperson from Japan and five Vice Chairpersons from New Zealand, Cambodia, China, India and Kyrgyzstan. Meanwhile, Parit Sulong MP Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad has been selected as the Chairperson of the Standing Committee for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment for a term of four years. This milestone highlights Malaysia's growing role in international parliamentary diplomacy and its commitment to a more equitable, inclusive, and resilient Asia-Pacific. Malaysia looks forward to collaborating with all AFPPD member states to advance the ICPD Programme of Action and the SDGs. Gerik bus crash: Apad issues show-cause letter to bus operator
PETALING JAYA: Anthony Loke says that the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) has issued a show-cause letter to the bus operator involved in the tragic bus crash in Gerik. "The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is undertaking safety inspections and audits on the bus and the company, in compliance with the Road Transport Act and the Land Public Transport Act. "Firm action will be taken once the investigation is completed," said the Transport Minister. He also extended his condolences to the families of the 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who tragically lost their lives in a bus crash in Gerik. He also vowed to implement changes to strengthen road safety policies in Malaysia. "I am deeply saddened and affected by this tragic accident. Each life lost is a significant loss not only to the families, but to the future of our country. "My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time," he said in a Facebook post on Monday (June 9). He also emphasised the government's commitment to enhancing road safety measures, particularly to address threats posed by irresponsible drivers and heavy vehicles not meeting safety standards. "We are committed to protecting road users. Among the policies being drafted is the mandatory implementation of speed limiters for heavy vehicles," he said, adding that the policy is currently under comprehensive review to prevent any manipulation upon enforcement. Loke also acknowledged the swift actions of the Higher Education Ministry and UPSI management in providing support to the bereaved families. "This incident serves as a stark reminder to all parties – the government, operators and society – that there can be no compromise on the safety of lives," he said. Earlier on Monday, 15 UPSI students were killed in the accident along the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik, and 27 other students, the bus driver and his assistant, as well as three passengers of another multi-purpose vehicle, were injured. The bus, which was carrying 42 students, overturned while the MPV, carrying four people, veered into a ditch. Preliminary investigations showed that the bus, driven by a substitute driver from another bus company, collided with the MPV before overturning. The bus is also believed to have been speeding, based on victims' accounts.

No plans to contest in any by-election after leaving Umno: Tengku Zafrul

In a statement posted on his social media today, Tengku Zafrul stressed that the possibility of running in a by-election was never part of his decision-making process when he chose to leave Umno. Advertisement 'I would like to make it clear that no discussion related to this matter ever took place, and it was not part of my consideration in making that decision. 'I strongly disagree with triggering by-elections without urgent necessity, as they consume both time and public funds,' he said. Addressing his resignation from Umno, Tengku Zafrul reiterated that it was a personal decision, made without external pressure. 'I acknowledge it was not an easy decision, but I carefully considered all views and opinions before arriving at it. Shouldn't the authorities at least compensate satirist Fahmi Reza for his 'burnt flight ticket'?
'CONFUSION'. 'Miscommunication'. These were the purported explanations proffered by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain over social activist Fahmi Reza being prevented from taking a flight abroad by immigration officers. 'In this regard, PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police) would like to clarify that there are no official restrictions imposed on Fahmi Reza at this time,' the nati0n's top cop pointed out in a statement yesterday (June 8). 'However, his name has been included in the movement monitoring list for the purposes of PDRM's internal records and references following our on-going investigation into the case. 'It's important to emphasise that this monitoring list is not a form of movement restriction but rather part of the usual monitoring procedures implemented by the authorities.' However, the firebrand graphic artist known for anti-government caricatures was non-plussed. Fahmi said he plans to sue the government over this 'miscommunication' that led to him being barred from travelling abroad. In a Facebook post, Fahmi lamented that no government official had taken responsibility for the mistake which caused him to miss an overseas trip. 'You restricted me, caused me trouble, wasted my time and money,' he hit out. 'The government and authorities aren't immune. You always tell me to 'follow the proper channels', right? 'Okay, see you in court,' was his ominous warning. This development was shared on Buletin TV3 Facebook page which has generated over 10K likes, 2.8K comments and 314 shares at the time of writing, underlining that many Malaysians don't quite buy this flimsy line of reasoning from the authorities. One netizen mocked the powers-that-be for being 'confused' over a variety of issues, including blacklists, gender, nepotism, purple gas tanks, AES cameras and missing stocks of local rice, among a host of things. Flight ticket wasted and the cops get away with a simple 'confused' excuse? This surely was unacceptable, insinuated one commenter. It was also highlighted that despite Fahmi being a vociferous critic of Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his government, there were no movement restrictions on him. This is unlike the scenario under Madani administration which is seen to curtail the dissident's freedom to speak out, observed one netizen. All said and done, whether one agrees with Fahmi Reza's stance or not, it is time Malaysians reject such flimsy excuses for taking draconian actions. Indeed, Fahmi should not only be indemnified for the wasted plane ticket but be compensated for curtailing his freedom of movement. That is a serious denial of a person's civil liberties and the powers-that-be need to learn that they cannot keep getting away by providing such flimsy excuses. As one netizen succinctly expressed, this is what has become of his country – from top to bottom, it is dictated by spin, twisted facts and taici (slang for 'washing of hands'). FocusM firmly believes in transparency and accountability. For the time being, it is hoped that Fahmi gets not just restitution but also justice. This heavy-handed abuse of power – conveniently swept aside with paper-thin excuses – affects everybody and it has to stop. – June 9, 2025
