Malaysia to host Asian parliamentarians' population and development secretariat

The decision was made at the 15th General Assembly of the AFPPD, held in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, where Malaysia's bid, led by Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Chair of AFPPD Malaysia and the works minister, received overwhelming support from all member states. 'This win reflects Malaysia's strong commitment to promoting sustainable development, gender equality, health rights and the welfare of people across Asia and the Pacific,' said AFPPD in a statement today. Meanwhile, Nanta in his posting on Facebook expressed Malaysia's honour at the trust placed in the country by its regional counterparts. 'Hosting the AFPPD Secretariat is a recognition of Malaysia's proactive role in championing critical issues such as youth empowerment, gender equality, ageing populations, and reproductive health. 'We are committed to ensuring that the Secretariat will serve as a dynamic and inclusive platform to foster dialogue, collaboration, and impactful action across our region,' he said. According to the statement, the AFPPD Secretariat will be relocated from Japan to Kuala Lumpur, where it will support parliamentarians in addressing population and development challenges over the next five years. It will coordinate programmes, research, and capacity-building to equip lawmakers with knowledge and policy tools. Malaysia, which has also been granted the privilege of leading the AFPPD's Secretariat, has unanimously nominated Ipoh Timor MP, Howard Lee, to take up this leadership role. In addition to the Secretary General from Malaysia, the leadership includes a Chairperson from Japan and five Vice Chairpersons from New Zealand, Cambodia, China, India and Kyrgyzstan. Meanwhile, Parit Sulong MP Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad has been selected as the Chairperson of the Standing Committee for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment for a term of four years. This milestone highlights Malaysia's growing role in international parliamentary diplomacy and its commitment to a more equitable, inclusive, and resilient Asia-Pacific. Malaysia looks forward to collaborating with all AFPPD member states to advance the ICPD Programme of Action and the SDGs. In a statement, the party said the act amounted to bullying and intimidation of the trader, who had already apologised over the flag incident and was still under investigation. 'Akmal's decision to disregard police warnings is also a direct challenge to the rule of law and a disruption of public order, causing unease among traders in the surrounding area and forcing them to close their businesses earlier than usual,' said DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook. 'Acts like this go beyond the limits of the law and the norms of Malaysia's multiracial society. Appropriate punishment must be meted out for such extreme behaviour.' DAP Socialist Youth wings nationwide have since been instructed to lodge police reports under Section 503 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, Section 504 for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and Section 505 for statements conducing to public mischief. Loke said reports would also be made under Section 507B of the Penal Code for causing harassment, distress, fear or anxiety, and Section 507C for uttering words likely to cause such effects. 'I reiterate that the Jalur Gemilang, as a symbol of national sovereignty, must be flown correctly and with full respect. However, threats, bullying and inciting tension are not the way to resolve this matter,' Loke added. Yesterday, the police had urged the cancellation of a planned gathering in Bertam here today over the issue of Malaysian flag, to prevent any confrontation between opposing groups. PDRM said the move was to safeguard the safety of the local community and maintain public order, after both Umno Youth and DAP planned to host events on the matter. The controversy began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the Jalur Gemilang was seen hanging upside-down outside his premises. The shop owner has reportedly said it was an unintentional mistake made while measuring a flagpole, which he corrected soon after. Umno Youth however proceeded with its protest, with hundreds attending, along with a counter-protest by civil society Lawyers for Liberty. — Malay Mail

'I do not have a daughter named Dayana Balqis, also known as Dedeng. Furthermore, I have never sent my daughter to study at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha. 'The birth certificate displayed in the post does not belong to my daughter. All the details are false. They were fabricated and can be verified at any National Registration Department branch,' he said in his Facebook page, Tuesday. The former State Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry lodged the report to call on the authorities to act against those responsible for creating and spreading the false claims, including individuals who shared the content on other online platforms. He also filed a Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) report the same day over the post, which appeared on the Facebook page under the name of 'Forum Politik Sabah Suara Anak Sabah, Ini Sabah Bah (ISB)'. He said legal advisers have recommended him to pursue the case in court. Although the post has since been deleted, Azhar said the damage had been done and stressed that the safety of his daughter was now at risk. 'We know that the majority of Malaysians are currently outraged at the bullies and killers involved in the case.' Meanwhile, a family member of a former SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha student also lodged a report in Lahad Datu on Aug 8 over defamatory claims linking their daughter to the case of Zara. Muhd Yassin said his 16-year-old daughter had already transferred to Kolej Vokasional Lahad Datu (KVLD) in early 2025. 'My daughter studied at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha in 2022 (Form 1) to 2024 (Form 3) and transferred to KVLD early this year. 'The incident involving Almarhumah Zara Qairina occurred when my daughter was no longer studied at the school. 'But her photo was shared in a video that was uploaded by an account on Tik Tok saying she was the murderer of Zara. 2026 Budget: East-West Highway upgrades a priority for Works Ministry
KUALA KANGSAR: The East-West Highway (JRTB), particularly the Gerik-Jeli stretch, is among the key priorities for the Works Ministry under the upcoming 2026 Budget, said Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. He said the ministry has submitted a request for funding to upgrade several sections of the route, citing urgent safety needs. However, the exact allocation will depend on the government's final decision. "It's not a special allocation, we've included it under regular funding requests for the JRTB," he told reporters after the official opening of the Sultan Muzzaffar Shah Bridge at Dataran Manong today. Earlier, the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah officially inaugurated the bridge. Also present were Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, his wife Datin Seri Aezer Zubin, as well as Public Works director-general Datuk Roslan Ismail. As part of ongoing safety measures along the JRTB, Nanta said 385 solar-powered streetlights have been installed in high-risk areas and dangerous bends, commonly known as 'black spots'. "These are not for the entire highway, only for critical sections identified through our assessments," he said, adding that damaged guardrails, signboards and road markings are also being repaired or replaced. Nanta also announced the launch of the MYJalan mobile app, which aims to enable the public to report road damage and submit feedback directly to the ministry. "Perak has been chosen as the first state to launch the MYJalan initiative, reflecting our commitment to public feedback and road safety," he said. He said the JRTB's condition had been a concern since the start of his tenure and described the highway as not only a vital interstate link but also a key part of the country's road development history. Data collected via the app, he noted, has already supported federal funding requests, leading to repair and upgrade works along the JRTB and other federal roads in Perak. – Bernama
