Tree plantation drive inaugurated in Latur

Latur, Aug 17 (PTI) The administration in Maharashtra's Latur district launched the second edition of its plantation drive on Sunday, roping in government bodies and NGOs in its efforts.
Collector Varsha Thakur-Ghuge inaugurated the Latur Harotstosav at Ganjgolai, and students, government employees and citizens took out a rally from Mahatma Gandhi Chowk to Ganjgolai to mark the occasion.
The district administration has been making efforts to accelerate tree plantation with the involvement of government bodies, NGOs, and citizens.
Speaking on the occasion, the collector said, 'Latur has very few trees. To make the district greener, every citizen must join this campaign and turn it into a people's movement. The COVID-19 crisis has already taught us the value of oxygen. Villages, towns, and neighbourhoods must set up oxygen parks, while citizens should plant trees on farm bunds, roadsides, terraces, and open spaces." PTI COR ARU

When India earns respect, Congress feels the pain: Shivraj Singh Chouhan
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday lashed out at the Congress and other opposition parties over their uproar in the Lok Sabha. 'Why is it that whenever India's global standing rises, Congress seems to suffer discomfort?' he asked pointedly. The Lok Sabha was scheduled to hold a discussion on 'India's First Astronaut on the International Space Station: The Role of the Space Programme in Making India a Developed Nation by 2047'. However, the session was disrupted by heavy sloganeering and chaos led by the Congress and other opposition MPs. In a video message, Chouhan expressed deep disappointment and said, 'There are moments in a nation's journey that should transcend political divisions. Whenever India has experienced a moment of pride, the entire country has rejoiced — but Congress has cried foul, raised doubts.' He cited examples, including India's successful Chandrayaan mission landing on the Moon's South Pole, the surgical strikes by the Indian Army, and Operation Sindoor, saying that while the nation stood united in pride, Congress chose to question and criticise. 'Be it air strikes or our military's decisive operations, while the whole country applauds our forces, Congress keeps asking: 'But how much damage was done?' he said. Referring to India's scientific achievement during the COVID-19 pandemic, Chouhan said: 'Our scientists developed a vaccine, and under the Prime Minister's leadership, over 100 countries received it. Lives were saved. But Congress dismissed it as 'Modi's vaccine' and warned people against taking it.' Highlighting the recent space mission, Chouhan lauded Shubhanshu Shukla, India's astronaut who visited the International Space Station, calling him a symbol of national pride. 'At a time when the nation was ready to welcome him with open arms and Parliament was to discuss his historic achievement, Congress created chaos in the Well of the House. Shouldn't all parties, regardless of affiliation, have united to honour him?' He added, 'The world is looking at India with amazement as we progress and grow — was it too much to expect Congress to participate constructively in such a discussion?' Taking a sharp dig, Chouhan remarked, 'Why does Congress experience pain whenever India's global prestige grows? Their noise, protests, and doubts only serve to dishonour those who bring glory to the country. Is this what they call patriotism? The entire nation is watching — and Congress will have to answer.'

Andhra govt boosts support for tenant farmers through CCRC lending
Amaravati, Aug 18 (PTI) The Andhra Pradesh government has strengthened support for tenant farmers by directing banks to extend crop loans under the Crop Cultivator Rights Cards (CCRC) programme, officials said. The State Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC) held a review meeting on CCRC lending, chaired by Special Chief Secretary, Agriculture and Cooperation B Rajsekhar, along with Agriculture Director Dilli Rao and other senior officials. 'The Andhra Pradesh government is committed to empowering tenant farmers by streamlining access to credit and government schemes," Rajsekhar said in a press release. Rao directed district agriculture officers and bankers to comply with the Andhra Pradesh Crop Cultivator Rights Act, 2019, ensuring institutional credit to all eligible CCRC holders without lapses. Under the Act, tenant farmers are entitled to crop loans, insurance, and other government benefits through CCRCs without affecting landowners' rights. In 2024-25, loans worth over Rs 4,400 crore were disbursed against a target of Rs 4,000 crore. For 2025-26, nearly six lakh CCRCs have been issued, including 75,858 renewals, while Rs 838 crore has been disbursed so far against the Rs 8,000 crore target, the release said. Key issues discussed included sanctioning loans to individual CCRC holders, improving coordination between bankers and Lead District Managers, compliance with Scale of Finance norms, and expediting CCRC issuance by district agriculture officers. Rao also urged farmers to approach banks for timely crop loans and asked the SLBC to extend support, noting that the government remains committed to ensuring tenant farmers have access to credit and opportunities.
