French police slashing boats but migrants still determined to reach UK

Arab Times13 hours ago
ECAULT BEACH, France, July 7, (AP): Across the English Channel, the UK's white cliffs beckon. On fine days, men and women with children in their arms and determination in their eyes can see the shoreline of what they believe will be a promised land as they attempt the perilous crossing clandestinely, ditching belongings to squeeze aboard flimsy inflatable boats that set to sea from northern France. In a flash, on one recent crossing attempt, French police swooped in with knives, wading into the water and slashing the boat's thin rubber - literally deflating the migrants' hopes and dreams.
Some of the men put up dispirited resistance, trying to position themselves - in vain - between the boat and the officers' blades. One splashed water at them, another hurled a shoe. Cries of "No! No!" rang out. A woman wailed. But the team of three officers, one also holding a pepper-gas canister, lunged at the boat again and again, pitching some of those aboard into the surf as it quickly deflated.
The Associated Press obtained video of the police boat-slashing, filmed on a beach near the French port of Boulogne. France's northern coast has long been fortified against invasion, with Nazi bunkers in World War II and pre-French Revolution forts. Now, France is defending beaches with increasing aggression against migrants trying at a record pace to go the other way - out to sea, to the UK.
Under pressure from UK authorities, France's government is preparing to give an even freer hand to police patrols that, just last week, were twice filmed slashing boats carrying men, women and children. The video obtained by AP was filmed Monday. Four days later, on Écault beach south of Boulogne, the BBC filmed police wading into the surf and puncturing another boat with box cutters, again pitching people into the water as it deflated.
An AP journalist who arrived moments later counted multiple lacerations and saw dispirited people, some still wearing life jackets, clambering back up sand dunes toward woods inland. There, AP had spent the previous night with families and men waiting for a crossing, sleeping rough in a makeshift camp without running water or other basic facilities.
Exhausted children cried as men sang songs and smoked around a campfire. The French Interior Ministry told AP that police haven't been issued orders to systematically slash boats. But the British government - which is partly funding France's policing efforts - welcomed what it called a "toughening' of the French approach. The UK is also pushing France to go further and let officers intervene against boats in deeper waters, a change the government in Paris is considering. Campaigners for migrant rights and a police union warn that doing so could endanger both migrants and officers.

Dehydrated Mbappé delayed by doping test after Real Madrid win

NEW JERSEY, July 7: Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé found himself alone at MetLife Stadium on Saturday night after his team departed for the airport without him following a 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Club World Cup quarterfinals in the United States. Mbappé, who scored his first goal of the tournament during the victory, remained behind after being selected for a mandatory doping test. While the rest of the Real Madrid squad boarded the team bus en route to West Palm Beach, Miami, the French star was delayed on the field for nearly an hour. Sources close to the team revealed that Mbappé had difficulty providing a sample due to dehydration, compounded by the intense heat and a recent recovery from a stomach and intestinal illness. Nearly an hour after the team's departure, Mbappé finally exited the stadium. He left in a black vehicle, accompanied by a club official and escorted by five police cars, to catch up with the team at the airport. Mbappé had missed Real Madrid's first three matches in the Club World Cup. He returned to action as a substitute in the round of 16 match against Juventus, and again in the quarterfinal showdown with Dortmund.

A reignited Trump-Musk feud burns Tesla investors, shares of EV company tumble 8%

NEW YORK, July 7, (AP): Shares of Tesla tumbled 8% at the opening bell Monday as the feud between CEO Elon Musk and Trump reignited over the weekend. Musk, once a top donor and ally of Trump, announced that he was forming a third political party in protest over the Republican spending bill that passed late last week. Musk has been highly critical of the bill, which he said would kill jobs and bog down burgeoning industries. In a social media post on Sunday, Trump said that the billionaire owner of SpaceX, Tesla and X had gone "off the rails' in recent weeks. Investors fear that Musk's companies, which receive significant subsidies from the federal government, could suffer further if his feud with Trump continues to fester. "With the autonomous future ahead and the AI Revolution in full force Musk/Tesla do not need to keep poking the bear as Trump can create more hurdles for Musk/Tesla/SpaceX over the coming years if this political battle gets nastier heading into mid-terms in 2026," Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives wrote in a note to clients late Sunday. Tesla shares have been extremely volatile since Musk went all-in for Trump in the run-up to last year's election with the company facing a growing backlash as a result of Musk's embrace of right-wing politics and his role in the Trump administration. Shares have plunged in Europe and the U.S.. Industry analysts believe a large part of that slump is being driven by Musk's affiliation with Trump and far-right parties like Germany AfD. But Tesla is facing rising competition globally, particularly in China. Since hitting an all-time high of $479.76 on Dec. 17, Tesla shares have lost about 40% of their value. Tesla shares are down about $26 each since Thursday's close, to $289.75.

Russia's ex-minister found dead hours after being fired in an apparent suicide,

MOSCOW, July 7, (AP): Russian's transport minister was found dead Monday, hours after being dismissed by President Vladimir Putin, in what officials said was an apparent suicide. Roman Starovoyt, who served as Russia's transport minister since May 2024, was fired in a presidential decree earlier in the day. His dismissal came after a weekend of travel chaos when airports grounded hundreds of flights during the busy vacation season due to the threat of attacks from Kyiv. Also on Monday, Russia fired more than 100 drones at civilian areas of Ukraine overnight, authorities said. At least 10 civilians were killed and 38 injured, including three children, in Russian attacks over the previous 24 hours, Ukrainian officials said. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP's earlier story follows below.
