Let us work for a drug-free Thoothukudi, Minister urges people
The event was conducted as part of the 'Drug Free Tamil Nadu' pledge taking event led by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in Chennai.
Addressing the students at the event, Ms. Geetha Jeevan said the event was organised to spread awareness about drug abuse, particularly targeting youth and students. 'Those who become addicted to drugs are often shunned by their family and society. They lose the ability to work properly and are unable to secure employment opportunities, ending up socially ostracized,' she said.
She urged the students to report on any kind of illegal drug sales in society either to district administration or to the police department.
Ms. Geetha Jeevan announced that funds had been allocated for Thoothukudi district to create awareness on drug abuse and added that the district administration was formulating ideas for this programme.
Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Minister Anitha Radhakrishnan, Thoothukudi Collector K. Elambahavath, Thoothukudi SP Albert John, Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, and Corporation Commissioner Banoth Mrugender Lal were present.
In Kanniyakumari, district collector R. Alagumeena presided over the pledge taking ceremony at a private college in Nagercoil. Highlighting the objective of the event, Ms. Alagumeena urged the students not to be trapped into the addiction, noting that they should avoid taking drugs in any form that can ruin their future.
Kanniyakumari Superintendent of Police R. Stalin, Nagercoil Mayor R. Mahesh, and Padmanabhapuram Sub Collector Vinay Kumar Meena were present.

Anti-drug awareness programme held
Dharmavaram: As part of the 5th anniversary celebrations of the National and State Action Plan for Prevention of Substance Abuse (2020), mandated by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, Sri Sathya Sai district administration conducted an anti-drug awareness programme at Government Polytechnic College, Dharmavaram on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, G Archana, Deputy Director, Department of Welfare of Differently Abled, Transgender and Senior Citizens (Anantapur & Sri Sathya Sai districts), urged the youth to set clear goals and move forward with discipline. She emphasised that since 2020, the State government has been taking determined measures to curb drug abuse and organising awareness drives in coordination with the medical, police and excise departments. Archana warned that possession, sale, storage, or transportation of narcotic substances is a criminal offence, punishable with up to 10 years of imprisonment. She highlighted the devastating impact of drug addiction on young lives, leading to social and economic downfall. Parents, she said, make significant sacrifices to educate their children, and youth should not ruin their future through substance abuse. She informed that those addicted to drugs are referred to the government de-addiction centre at Hindupur District Hospital or private facilities like Swear De-addiction Centre for treatment and counselling. Citizens can report drug-related incidents to the Eagle toll-free helpline 1972. The programme concluded with a pledge administered to students against drug abuse and illegal trafficking under the International Day Against Drug Abuse framework. College Principal, staff, and departmental officials participated in the event.

Several campaigns held to make Madurai drug-free: Collector
Madurai: In order to make Madurai free from drugs, various awareness programmes have been held this year, in which the message against drug abuse was spread to more than 22,000 people, district collector K J Praveenkumar said. He was speaking at the launch of the statewide 'Drug Free Tamil Nadu' campaign inaugurated by deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin via video conference at American College on Monday. "Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin's motive is to create a drug-free state. Similarly, we need to make Madurai drug-free, and various awareness programmes have been held in collaboration with students and volunteers. Since January this year, the district conducted 786 awareness programmes, 228 rallies, 37 meetings, 13 plays, and 10 debates on drug prevention," the collector said. Praveenkumar urged youngsters not to get into drugs, saying that even a small amount could lead to addiction. "Each one must ensure that their families are free of drug addiction at the household level. Subsequently, we must ensure a drug-free street environment in Madurai," he said. According to a statement by Madurai police, anti-drug clubs have been organised in 187 schools and 30 colleges. In the last three years, 753 people were accused in ganja cases, and 542 were convicted. Nearly 1,105 were accused in gutka cases, and 755 were convicted, the statement added. The event was presided over by mayor Indrani Ponvasanth, commissioner of police (Madurai city) J Loganathan, and superintendent of police (Madurai rural) B K Arvind, in the presence of college students and volunteers. Udhayanidhi presents felicitates police personnel, students as part of ‘Drug Free Tamil Nadu' campaign
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Tuesday presented the Chief Minister's Police Medals to personnel for their role in curbing the distribution and use of illegal drugs in the State. He also presented cheques to educational institutions and students for actively taking part in an awareness campaign against the illegal drugs. During an event organised under the 'Drug Free Tamil Nadu' campaign on the Government Arts College campus at Nandanam in Chennai, Mr. Udhayanidhi felicitated the students of schools and colleges for their active participation in the awareness campaign. Minister of Higher Education Govi. Chezhiaan, Secretary of Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department Atulya Misra, Home Secretary Dheeraj Kumar, Director-General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal, Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun, and A. Amalraj, Additional DGP, Enforcement Bureau-CID, were among those present.
