KLANG, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has consented to the rebranding of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Bintulu Campus in Sarawak as UPM Sarawak (UPMS).
Sultan Sharafuddin said the rebranding was a strategic move by UPM to expand its role in conjunction with the university's 50th anniversary in Sarawak. UPM was formerly known as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia.
'I am very proud of this university's achievements, not only as a centre of excellence in agriculture, forestry and food security, but also as a catalyst for national development, especially in Sarawak. It has become a competitive institution in the Borneo region and on the international stage.
'I hope UPM's efforts and commitment will continue in developing talent and expertise to advance the country's socio-economic progress, particularly in Sarawak, through the UPM Food Security Blueprint that has been developed,' said His Royal Highness at the UPMS Proclamation Ceremony held here today.
Sultan Sharafuddin was accompanied by the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin.
Also present were Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
In his speech, Abang Johari said the strengthening of UPMS aligns with the aspirations of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030), particularly in the agriculture, forestry and renewable energy sectors.
He said one of UPMS's notable achievements is the implementation of the AgriHub@Gedong project, a strategic collaboration between the university and the Sarawak Premier's Office.
'This project aims to spearhead the transformation of padi cultivation activities in Lubok Punggor, Gedong, and marks an important starting point in efforts to develop Sarawak as a national-level high-impact padi production hub,' he said.

Asean urged to infuse gender lens in human rights agenda

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Asean must step up its efforts to incorporate gender perspectives into the business and human rights agenda to ensure inclusive regional development. Malaysia's Representative to the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Edmund Bon Tai Soon said while Asean has progressed in promoting gender equality, the women across the region still face structural barriers that prevent their full participation in decision making and economic life. "Business and human rights are not solely about trade regulations or governance, but it impacts people especially women and girls, and those from vulnerable and marginalised communities whose voices have often been excluded from decision-making. "These barriers remain deeply entrenched in our societies and too often, business structures and practices appear gender-neutral, but continue to reinforce inequality in effect,' he said in his remarks at the Regional Workshop on Gender Lens Perspective on Business and Human Rights in Asean here on Monday. He emphasised that gender discrimination in business settings remains both a cause and a consequence of broader inequality, particularly for women and girls, and should be recognised as a form of violence. "We see on our TV screens, we see in the media, news about war and genocides, that is actual violence, that is physical violence, that is something that we are against. "But structural and cultural discrimination is also a form of violence, and I think that is something that we need to localise,' he said. Bon added that Asean must ensure its frameworks reflect the lived realities of women and girls in line with international standards such as the United Nations Guiding Principles (UNGPs) on Business and Human Rights. "As global standards such as the UNGPs continue to shape international expectations and up-and-coming regulations to reflect, Asean must also evolve to ensure that our frameworks reflect the lived realities of women and girls in our region and that they are not treated as an afterthought in economic growth,' he said. The two-day regional workshop, held in Kuala Lumpur from 30 June to 1 July, aimed to explore how a regional gender lens framework can help address gender-based barriers, tackle structural and cultural discrimination, and enhance the protection of the human rights of women and girls. It was jointly supported by Asean Member States through the AICHR Fund, the Government of Japan via the Japan-Asean Integration Fund (JAIF), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with relevant Malaysian ministries and agencies, as well as the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM). - Bernama

Gobind Calls On Banks To Help Uplift Communities Via Digital Empowerment

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) — Banks today must not only be financial enablers but also help in uplifting communities by being digital advocates as well, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. He emphasised that digitalisation is key to nation-building. 'While digitalisation continues to accelerate growth in all aspects of the economy especially in banking and finance, it is imperative that the government and financial institutions ensure that no Malaysian is left behind in the digital economy,' he said in his keynote speech at the launching ceremony of CIMB's 'Kita Bagi Jadi Komuniti' (KBJK) programme here today. He said digital empowerment uplifts communities by providing access to information, fostering collaboration, and enabling community-led development. 'By improving digital skills and knowledge, communities can leverage technology to address local challenges, adapt to change, and improve their overall wellbeing,' he added. CIMB Group Holdings Bhd today announced a commitment of RM200 million over the next five years (2026 to 2030) to advance customers and society under its 'Kita Bagi Jadi Komuniti' platform. The commitment will primarily focus on three key areas - driving long term economic empowerment, community wellbeing and financial inclusion, including equipping the youth, the unbanked, and the underserved with important life skills such as digital and financial literacy. Gobind congratulated CIMB for its commitment and expressed hope that more industry players would do the same, working collaboratively to ensure all Malaysians are part of the country's digital transformation. 'I am pleased to note that CIMB and its subsidiary Touch N Go Digital are providing not just banking convenience but also education and awareness about digital literacy that can uplift communities in navigating today's financial landscape with confidence and ease,' he added. In April, the Ministry of Digital launched the Business Digitalisation Initiative (BDI) to equip micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with the skills and tools needed for digital transformation. The BDI is supported by a mixed fund totalling RM1.5 billion and includes freemium digital solutions to reduce business operation costs, as well as access to an integrated ecosystem involving collaboration between the public and private sectors. The government also have the 'AI Untuk Rakyat' programme that introduces AI to Malaysians. Over 1.3 million Malaysians have completed the programme thus far, and the number is growing, he said. According to Gobind, Malaysia attracted digital investments totalling RM310.7 billion from 2021 to March 2025, an indication that the country is a rapidly growing digital infrastructure hub in the region.
