Payton Talbott vs. Felipe Lima UFC 317 preview
Talbott (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) will look to rebound from the first loss of his professional career. At UFC 311 in January, Talbott dropped a unanimous decision to Raoni Barcelos. In his first three UFC appearances, Talbott finished each opponent, turning away Nick Aguirre, Cameron Saaiman and Yanis Ghemmouri. ... After dropping his pro debut, Lima (14-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has not tasted defeat since. He's won his first two UFC bouts by submitting Muhammad Naimov and winning a unanimous decision over Miles Johns.
Payton Talbott vs. Felipe Lima UFC 317 expert pick, prediction
Kicking off the paid portion of the card is a prospects battle at bantamweight between Payton Talbott and Felipe Lima.
Although it feels like the public has started to turn on Talbott since suffering a vet lesson at the hands of Raoni Barcelos earlier this year, I can't say that I disagree with him being a slight underdog in this spot.
I'm a fan of Talbott's style, but Lima has been a fighter I've had my eye on for some time, as he was prominently featured in my prospects to watch column prior to his arrival in the UFC.
Lima's striking reminded me of a slightly more dynamic and polished version of Thomas Almeida's striking when he was first stepping onto the UFC stage and has since demonstrated his underrated ground game.
Traveling and training with the likes of Khamzat Chimaev and others at places like Allstars Training Center and Bangtao Muay Thai, everything from Lima's wrestling to conditioning appears to be getting better each time out.
I'll be curious to see what kind of improvements Talbott was able to make to his defensive wrestling and tactics since his first pro defeat, but I think that the takedowns will be a big back-pocket option for Lima down the stretch.
The pick is Lima by unanimous decision.

Galaxy extend surprise run in Leagues Cup, defeat favored Pachuca for spot in semifinals

With the terrible year they've had in MLS, expectations weren't exactly high for Galaxy ahead of their Leagues Cup quarterfinal match against Pachuca. The Galaxy suffered embarrassing defeats during their past two MLS games, falling at home to the Seattle Sounders and on the road against Inter Miami. However, Galaxy coach Greg Vanney's players put the losses behind them and continued to perform well in Leagues Cup play, surprisingly eliminating Pachuca 2-1 on Wednesday night at Dignity Health Sports Park. Liga MX leading Pachuca entered the match as the favorite despite losing to Xolos de Tijuana at home last Saturday. The Galaxy opened the scoring in the 27th minute thanks to an own goal by Pachuca defender Daniel Aceves, who seemed to be struggling with ball control and spacing. Diego Fagundez took a short corner kick for Marco Reus, who sent in a low cross and Aceves, unfortunately for his team, pushed the ball into his own net to give the Galaxy a 1-0 lead. The Galaxy kept pushing forward and their efforts soon paid off when Joseph Paintsil launched a swift attack down the left wing to Matheus Nascimento inside the box, who backheeled the ball to Reus to make it 2-0 in the 37th minute. In the sixth minute of second half stoppage time, Pachuca found space to score a consolation goal. The goal came from a half-volley inside the box by Brazilian Alemao to make the score 2-1. The match ended a minute later, sending the Galaxy to the Leagues Cup semifinals. All Mexican teams were eliminated from the tournament Wednesday night. The Galaxy will play the Seattle Sounders and Inter Miami will play Orlando City for spots in the Leagues Cup final. This article first appeared in Spanish via L.A. Times en Español.

Nate Diaz reveals how he would have fought 'scared f*cking child' Khamzat Chimaev

Nate Diaz is not a fan of UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev's style. Despite Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) taking down Dricus Du Plessis (23-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) 12 times and controlling him for over 21 minutes en route to a dominant decision in their UFC 319 headliner Saturday, Diaz was not impressed. He thinks Chimaev played it safe and wanted no part of the stand up with Du Plessis. "I don't like that kind of fighter," Diaz told Sneako of Chimaev (h/t Championship Rounds). "It's boring to me. He's supposed to be this big, scary guy, right? And remember when he had him in side control and he's holding him, dominating him, right? Then he lets go and hits him a little bit, like little soft punches and sh*t. That's what people don't understand about the styles. "That type of fighter is a scared fighter. He's scared for his life. He's that afraid that if he lets go to hit him hard, that motherf*cker might get up and get the f*ck away from him. So that's a scared style to me. He comes off as this big, intimidating guy but he's a big old scared f*cking child. That's why I Tweeted about it. I said, 'He's not a fighter,' because you can tell by how scared he is, holding him that tight." Diaz was scheduled to face Chimaev at UFC 279 in September 2022, but the bout was scrapped when Chimaev missed the welterweight mark by nine pounds. Instead, Chimaev fought Kevin Holland at middleweight, and Diaz fought Tony Ferguson. Both fighters got their hand raised by submission, and Diaz hasn't competed in the octagon since. Had the fight materialized, Diaz (21-13 MMA, 16-11 UFC) explains how he wouldn't have been afraid to engage Chimaev on the ground. "When I was going to fight him, I had the f*cking wrestlers coming up to me like Henry Cejudo, 'Don't let him take you down.' I'm like 'No, I'm going out there to go to the ground,'" Diaz said (h/t Sneako Daily). "You think I'm going to sit there and try to defend the takedown the whole time? Then defend, defend, defend, get up, get up, get up until you're too tired and he takes your back and get choked like (Dustin) Poirier did, (Justin) Gaethje? It's like, no, you don't fight like that. You learn to fight from your back. You're going to lose a decision anyway so learn how to fight there. "Get him in front of you, put him in your closed guard and f*cking beat the f*ck out of him. You're going to make my life a living hell trying to get up, then I'm just not going try to get up, I'm going to beat the f*ck out of you from my back and lose a decision or take you out somehow by brutally damaging your whole grill, catching you in chokes, flipping you over, and f*cking you up. I'm not going to be an athlete back with you because you've already obviously got that part covered. That's how he got there. ... I didn't plan on getting up when I fought Khamzat. I'm like, let's go to the ground motherf*cker. I did Gracie jiu-jitsu. I'm a black belt."

Belal Muhammad slams Dricus Du Plessis: 'He didn't want to get submitted' at UFC 319

Belal Muhammad wasn't going to waste his opportunity to criticize Dricus Du Plessis' title loss at UFC 319. Du Plessis (23-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) was dominated and outgrappled in a lopsided decision loss to Khamzat Chimaev in Saturday's middleweight championship main event at United Center in Chicago. Muhammad predicted a loss for Du Plessis, who had no answer for Chimaev's wrestling after getting taken down 12 times and controlled for over 21 minutes. "What did we learn? That DDP has not learned wrestling since the (Derek) Brunson fight," Muhammad said on his YouTube channel. "I called it. I thought it was going to be an easy fight. I thought it was going to be a walk-through-you fight for Khamzat, and it was. He dominated it. Dana said he thought it was four 10-8 rounds. I had it the same. People are going to complain, people are going to say whatever they want to say, but that was a dominant victory. "For Khamzat, it was too easy to take him down and hold him down. I know people are coming at him, but it's on DDP to move. If I'm Khamzat, and I've got a full crucifix on you, and I'm hitting you, DDP needed the explosion, DDP needed the risk factor of trying to do anything to get up. But he didn't want to. He didn't want to get submitted. I think he was just satisfied with getting through the fight without getting finished like that." Despite getting held down for the majority of the fight, Du Plessis did a good job of fending off any major submission threats from Chimaev (15-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC). Muhammad thinks the South African played it too safe, and questioned his strategy. "I'm just wondering what their game plan was," Muhammad added. "What they thought was going to happen, if they underestimated the wrestling? Because like I said, in the Derek Brunson fight, we've seen that hole in your game. Brunson had mount, Brunson had side control, Brunson got you down with ease. (Robert) Whittaker got you down, and even Darren Till got you down. "We've seen all those paths, and like I said, your last three fights were all against strikers so, you didn't really have the risks of going against anybody that's going to shoot on you. Now you did, now we see. That's a hole. Khamzat pretty much dominated it. There's no reason for him to be down, to be upset, it was a dominating fight, one of the most dominating championship fights we've seen." Prior to the Chimaev loss, Du Plessis had beaten Sean Strickland twice, Israel Adesanya, and Robert Whittaker. "DDP got away with a lot of stuff, mistakes that he makes, because his matchups were kind of favorable for him, not any grapplers," Muhammad concluded. "Now we know. He needs to fix stuff, he needs to get better."
