Pioneer Magic: Bonteheuwel Boerboel crowned Dog of the Year at SABBS

IOL News19-06-2025
A guard dog from Bonteheuwel has been named Dog of the Year at the South African Boerboel Breeders Society (SABBS) International Show 2025.
Elton Daniels and his boerboel, Pioneer Magic - born, bred and raised in Bonteheuwel, stole the show on Saturday in Bloemfontein when the sturdy dog was crowned the International Senior Champion Male, International Grand Champion Male and International Dog of the Year.
A proud Daniels says his 21-month-old top dog showed pedigree at the competition to finish best in show.
"There are many things that the judges look at. such as his temperament, structure, height, bone density, eyes and top line.
"Friends of mine always say Magic has the topline of Table Mountain because it is straight and Magic came out tops on Saturday.
"Pioneer Magic travelled across the country to various regional shows, SABBS shows and Western Cape club shows and he always placed first at these shows and won many championship classes throughout South Africa.'

FINAL schoolboy First XV rugby rankings for 2025

The 'unofficial' ranking of South Africa's top schoolboy rugby sides is always a point of debate. Image: Instagram @paarlboyshighschool The 'unofficial' ranking of South Africa's top schoolboy rugby sides was settled at the Faure Street Stadium in Paarl earlier this month when Paal Boys' High upset hosts Paarl Gimnasium 35-33 in a match that will long live in the memory bank. While there are still a handful of matches taking place around the country, the 'big guns' are now done for the season. Upset readers Any attempt at ranking South Africa's First XV rugby schools is guaranteed to upset as many readers as it pleases. ADVERTISEMENT The simple fact of the matter is that there is NO possible way of accurately determining a definitive list. Many lists are to be found floating around the internet – none of which are in fact 'official'. While it's true that thanks to an increase in the number of schoolboy rugby festivals around the country more schools are playing schools they previously wouldn't have faced, no school plays every other school both home and away during the season. Hence, every list should be taken with a pinch of salt and is subjective at best. Having said that, here is the final unofficial 'official' First XV Top 20 rankings list after the weekend's matches: Ranking School Province 1 Paarl Boys' High Western Cape 2 Paarl Gimnasium Western Cape 3 Grey College Free State 4 Affies Gauteng 5 Oakdale Western Cape 6 Paul Roos Western Cape 7 DHS KwaZulu-Natal 8 Helpmekaar Gauteng 9 Garsfontein Gauteng 10 Noordheuwel Gauteng 12 Stellenberg Western Cape 12 Rondebosch Western Cape 13 Wynberg Western Cape 14 Outeniqua Western Cape 15 Westville KwaZulu-Natal 16 Northwood KwaZulu-Natal 17 Hilton College KwaZulu-Natal 18 Boland Landbou Western Cape 19 Jeppe Gauteng 20 Maritzburg College KwaZulu-Natal Selected results from the weekend Gauteng Noordvaal EG Jansen 24-31 Garsfontein ADVERTISEMENT Monument 28-29 Waterkloof Western Cape Rondebosch 23-20 SACS Bishops 26-26 Wynberg Eastern Cape Dale College 10-16 Hudson Park Framesby 27-10 Marlow Graeme College 29-26 Muir College Grey High 14-27 Selborne College Queens College 52-0 Cambridge Free State Grey College 26-25 Paul Roos NOTE: More results will be added as they become available Have much interest do you have in schoolboy sport rankings? Diary:  Kamyar Bineshtarigh's Group Show to open at  Southern Guild this August, Don Toliver part of 2025 DStv Delicious line up and Apples releases Magic

Juicy: Musician Apples drops Magic this Women's Month. Apples waves her 'Magic' wand with new single Born in the Eastern Cape, brought up in Johannesburg and now based in Los Angeles, singer-songwriter Apples marks Women's Month with the release of her captivating new single, Magic. Co-written with Marc Williams and produced by Indasoul Entertainment, the track is a cinematic, yet intimate, exploration of the intoxicating pull towards someone you know might not be right for you. With lush production and raw, unfiltered emotion, Apples delivers a pop-driven sound that expands on her Afropop-rooted debut Hamba Nawe while staying true to the soul of a Joburg girl chasing big dreams. Before music, Apples made her mark as a model and cultural ambassador, earning titles such as Mrs South Africa and a gold medal at iPOP Los Angeles. Recently named one of New York Weekly's Top 20 Inspirational Women to Watch in 2025, she's stepping into this new chapter with purpose, passion and a powerful message. Magic is streaming on all major platforms. Don Toliver to perform at Johannesburg festival The DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival, powered by LottoStar, turns up the heat on 21 and 22 September at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, in Joburg, with a Saturday line-up led by Don Toliver, Kwesta and Sjava & Big Zulu as Inkabi Zezwe. Now in its 12th edition, the festival brings a bold fusion of local and global talent, from Toliver's chart-topping hits to the kasi flair of South African rap royalty. The Channel O Dance Stage will ignite with a vibrant blend of amapiano, Afro-house, hip-hop and gqom, featuring acts like Distruction Boyz, Kamo Mphela, Oscar Mbo and international DJ Ashoju. Sunday sees house legend Sandy Rivera headline alongside DJ Kabila, Kenzhero, DJ Fresh and DJ Tira. With a mix of world-class music, dynamic activations and great cuisine, this celebration promises an unforgettable weekend of rhythm, flavour and cultural exchange. Tickets via Ticketmaster or Bineshtarigh's 'Group Show' on at Southern Guild Floor plan: Kamyar Bineshtarigh is to exhibit in Cape Town. This month, Southern Guild presents Group Show, Kamyar Bineshtarigh's second solo exhibition with the gallery, opening in Cape Town on 21 August and running until 8 November. Known for his distinctive wall-transfer technique, Bineshtarigh peels layers of paint, plaster, markings and textures directly from the walls and floors of artists' studios across South Africa. These extracted surfaces — from pristine to paint-splattered, from quiet textures to densely marked references — carry the residue of creative processes, social exchanges and lived histories. In Group Show, the studio itself becomes both subject and material, thus blurring the lines between the site of making and the gallery display. Featuring transfers from artists such as Mary Sibande, Nandipha Mntambo and Brett Charles Seiler, the exhibition reads like an archaeological archive of artistic labour. Each piece is a preserved fragment, a memorial to the often-unseen environments that nurture creation, now suspended in time within the gallery walls.

SA Schools: The unofficial 'official' top 20 rankings

From Paarl Gimnasium to Paul Roos, Paarl Boys to Grey College and Affies, these are the latest unofficial 'official' schoolboy rankings for the 2025 season. In South Africa, rugby is a tradition as deeply embedded in our history as braais. It is an honour to get into any of our top rugby schools such as Paarl Gimnasium, Affies, Grey College, Affies and Paarl Boys amongst many others. So, it is an even bigger honour to represent the first team in an age-old SA Schools rugby derby. Let's take a look at the SA Schools who are on top of the unofficial 'official' SA Schoolboy rugby rankings (based on first team fixtures in 2025). Ranking School Province 1 Paarl Boys Western Cape 2 Paarl Gim Western Cape 3 Grey College Free State 4 Affies Gauteng 5 Paul Roos Western Cape 6 DHS Western Cape 7 Westville Gauteng 8 Oakdale KwaZulu-Natal 9 Garsfontein KwaZulu-Natal 10 Hilton College Gauteng 12 Wynberg KwaZulu-Natal 13 Grey High School Western Cape 14 Stellenberg Western Cape 15 Helpmekaar Gauteng 16 Noordheuwel Western Cape 17 Northwood KwaZulu-Natal 18 Queens College Eastern Cape 19 Boland Landbou Gauteng 20 Jeppe Gauteng * As reported on The South African , you should take these rankings with a pinch of salt because each school has different fixtures. Meaning, each school faces different schools and no school faces each school home and away. These rankings are based off the recent results on the 9 August 2025. The 2025 SA Schools rugby season is coming to a close. 'The 2025 school rugby season nears its final chapter, the last few clashes of the year are being fought with all the pride, passion, and determination that makes South African schoolboy rugby so special. While the rankings are almost set in stone, there are still those final, fiercely contested fixtures that can sway positions and settle bragging rights before the curtain falls,' SASchoolSport confirmed. Therefore, there are a few fixtures left to determine the final schoolboy rugby rankings of the year. 'With only a handful of fixtures left on the calendar, the 2025 Fairtree First XV Rankings are edging toward their final shape. It's been a season of spectacular tries, dramatic comebacks, and unforgettable rivalries—and while the end is in sight, there's still rugby to be played, moments to be made, and hearts to be lifted before the ultimate whistle blows,' they concluded.
