Illegal e-bikes and scooters seized in Sheffield city centre
About 150 e-bikes and electric scooters being used illegally have been seized in a crackdown by police in Sheffield.One of the e-bikes seized was capable of being ridden at speeds of 40mph (64.3km/h) - more than twice the legal limit of 15.5mph (25km/h), South Yorkshire Police said.The force warned that where an e-bike exceeded the limit, it was considered a motorcycle or moped and required insurance, tax and a valid licence.Insp Andy Rimmer said e-bikes travelling at such speeds would put "pedestrians going about their daily business at risk".
E-scooters are illegal to use on public roads, pavements and cycle lanes and are only permitted on private land with the landowner's permission.The exception is when they are hired as part of a government-approved scheme and are allowed in certain areas.The force said work had been ongoing in the city centre area since December to target what they said were "potentially dangerous machines".Insp Rimmer said a 34-year-old man had been reported for summons after being found on an illegally modified e-bike with no insurance or licence.He added: "We take a structured approach when it comes to electric e-bikes and scooters - and the first stage is always engagement and education."If you're stopped riding what we think is an illegal electric bike or scooter, we will explain and encourage you to follow the law."But, as our results show, we do have the power to seize them depending on the circumstances."

A pensioner who attacked his neighbour with a hammer before going home to grab a knife to stab him to death has been found guilty of murder. Peter Kindell, 80, brutally set up John Jones, 76, with the hammer in the lobby of a block of flats in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, at around 4.30pm on January 3. The pensioner fled back to his flat when two brave women intervened and stayed with Mr Jones whilst they called an ambulance. However, Kindell returned with a knife as they were speaking to the 999 call handler and savagely stabbed Mr Jones to death. Kindell was arrested shortly afterwards and made no comment to most questions asked by police. In court, he claimed he had killed Mr Jones due to diminished responsibility, but the prosecution did not accept his defence. Instead, they argued the killing was a reaction to a long-running dispute between Kindell and Mr Jones. They also highlighted evidence which showed there was research and planning from Kindell. Detective Inspector Nick Hind, of Thames Valley Police's Major Crime Unit, said: 'Whatever the reasons were for Kindell's actions on 3 January, there can be no excuses for what he did. 'He has now been held accountable and been found guilty of murder. He will be sentenced in due course. 'John Jones was a well-loved man, and his death caused great distress to his loved ones and his friends. 'I would like to publicly acknowledge the courage and selflessness of the two women who went to the aid of Mr Jones, and also to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Mr Jones's family. 'They have all been remarkably dignified in light of this horrendous incident, and have supported our investigation team throughout. 'I know that no outcome will serve as solace to them, but I hope that they are able to move on with their lives in the best way that they can, and I'd ask that their privacy is respected whilst they attempt to do so.' Kindell will be sentenced at the same court on a date to be confirmed.

Coronation Street 's Gary Windass is left fighting for his life as the soap finally reveals what happened to the 'missing' villager - leaving Maria 'spiralling'. The mystery began on the ITV soap when the builder (Mikey North) left Weatherfield, supposedly to stay with his mother for a while. It was to escape neighbour Lou Michaelis (Farrel Hegarty) blackmailing him, after she leant in and kissed him recently, leaving him stunned. She promised she would keep quiet about the kiss - including to Gary's partner Maria (Samia Longchambon) - as long as 'he did what she said', with her exact motive unclear. Gary and Maria are in a rough spot in their relationship at the moment so when he left town for a mysterious reason, she was upset but quickly brushed it off. But when he did not return for her son Liam's (Charlie Wrenshall) birthday, alarm bells started ringing in her head as she wondered where he had gone. And Friday's episode will reveal he has not left town at all - but is actually in a coma at Weatherfield General, fighting for his life, with his family and friends totally unaware. The revelation comes after Maria gets so worried for Gary's safety, she reports him as a missing person to police detective Kit Green (Jacob Roberts). It is then she discovers from him there is an unidentified coma patient at the local hospital. Kit assures Maria it is not Gary - but it is a sign even he has been taken in by Gary's mystery attacker. It turns out the reason why no one knows Gary is at the hospital is the unknown criminal has tried to cover their tracks by giving the wrong name for him and claiming to be his next of kin. As Gary remains in critical condition, the upcoming episodes will unravel how he ended up in hospital - and exactly who put him there. Samia, who plays Maria, said: 'Maria and Gary are going through a bit of a rough patch at the minute and initially, she's upset that he's left but doesn't think too much into it. 'As soon as Gary misses Liam's birthday, she has a gut feeling that something isn't right and fears something awful might have happened to him. 'Maria's mind is spiralling but she doesn't stop for a second to think who actually attacked Gary. 'She's aware he has a lot of enemies from over the years who could have potentially wanted to take revenge on him.' Five jailed for running major drug-dealing network from Bristol
Five people who admitted being involved in running a major drug-supply network have each been jailed for up to 12 four men and a woman were sentenced at Bristol Crown Court after police discovered cocaine, MDMA, ketamine and cannabis, valued at about £30, also seized 14kg of cocaine with a street value of more than £1.1m in Bristol and also found £84,595 at a property in Barton Supt Ben Lavender at Avon and Somerset Police said the investigation had "reduced harm significantly". The defendants who were jailed were:Claude Craig Gumbs, 34, of Church Street, Redfield, was jailed for 12 Griffiths, 34, of Patchway, South Gloucestershire, was jailed for eight yearsOsheen Griffiths, 31, of Lambeth, London, was jailed for three years and three Chanter, 64, of Brook Road, Montpelier, was jailed for three years and four monthsTerry Ellick, 39, of Kingswood Heights, was also jailed for three years and four monthsAll five pleaded guilty to two counts of being concerned in the supply of cocaine and MDMA, and two counts of being concerned in the supply ketamine and also pleaded guilty to charges of supplying cocaine to a man in Redfield in August 2024, possession with intent to supply cocaine and possession of criminal property. Together the group were involved in running a drugs line that handed a variety of banned substances to hundreds of customers, the court heard. The force began an investigation in August 2024 after a man's rucksack was found to contain 3kg of cocaine, and tracked the source to Gumbs' home address in Barton then searched a flat, where they found Osheen Griffiths and, after finding drugs and cash, they were both arrested on suspicion of drug offences. Some of those drugs were for sale via the drugs Junior Griffiths and Osheen Griffiths were involved in running the drugs line, receiving orders and directing dealers Chanter and Ellick to Supt Ben Lavender, head of the serious organised crime team, said: "The supply of drugs like cocaine causes upset and misery in our communities and has associated consequences in terms of further offences being committed to fund addictions."
