Cardinals announce coaching fellowship addition to staff

USA Today14-02-2025

A day after the Arizona Cardinals announced the changes on their coaching staff, they announced another addition.
They have added a coach via the team's Bill Bidwill Coaching Fellowship program, which is designed to increase diversity and create additional opportunities for coaching experience at the highest level.
This year's fellow is DJ Gillins.
He was with the Cardinals as a coach in training camp last year under the league's Bill Walsh Coaching Fellowship. He previously coached running backs and wide receivers at the collegiate level. He began as a graduate assistant with three different schools — Utah State in 2019, Arkansas in 2019-2020 and Utah in 2021. He then coached receivers at Long Island University for two years and then running backs at Stony Brook last year.
He played quarterback and receiver in college, so between his playing days and his previous coaching work, he likely will work on the offensive side of the ball.
This fellowship has been successful. The last two to be part of it are still on the team and were recently promoted. Connor Senger was made the team's new pass gam specialist, replacing the departed Spencer Whipple, while Blaine Gauthier became offensive quality control coach.

Arizona Cardinals expecting 'big things' from OLB Zaven Collins in 2025

Arizona Cardinals expecting 'big things' from OLB Zaven Collins in 2025 GM Monti Ossenfort reaffirmed the importance Collins has on the defense despite the addition of Josh Sweat. With the signing of outside linebacker Josh Sweat this offseason, Zaven Collins has been a little bit forgotten. Some publications have tried to shuttle him off the Arizona Cardinals' roster in trade speculation. However, Collins, entering his fifth season, still figures as a major part of the Cardinals and their defensive plans. General manager Monti Ossenfort, appearing on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM on Wednesday, reaffirmed how he feels about the former No. 16 overall pick. "I love Zaven," Ossenfort said. He expects "big things" from Collins in 2025. "Zaven's been a huge part of what we've done defensively the last two year," he said. "He's going to continue to be." Collins is coming off his second season playing as an edge defender. He led the team with five sacks and added 57 tackles, seven tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. Ossenfort raved about Collins' versatility. "We went through the position switch with him, and he's really settled into that," he said. "Really looking forward the way he can play three phases. He rushes the passer. He sets the edge. He drops in coverage. It's hard to find. It's hard to find a guy that big that can do that many things." On top of that, he is great in the locker room as a teammate and a leader. Arizona Cardinals DL Calais Campbell took it easy but will be ready in training camp

Arizona Cardinals DL Calais Campbell took it easy but will be ready in training camp Campbell, almost 39 years old, took it easy in the offseason program but says he will be ready when training camp starts Defensive lineman Calais Campbell is back with the Arizona Cardinals for his 18th NFL season. He spent his first nine with the team and, after leaving in free agency in 2017, he returns after eight years. He is now almost 39 years old (he will turn 39 six days before the team's season opener), so preparing for the season is a little different. While some younger players have come on noticeably bigger and stronger, Campbell knows what he needs to do. Where is he physically right now? "I'm where I'm supposed to be," he said, making sure to add, "I'm not ready to play a game, that's for sure." He took it easy in the offseason. He was not at most of OTAs, which were voluntary. He didn't do much in minicamp. "Coach (Jonathan Gannon), he gave me lot of grace and was just like, come around, be around the guys, a little bit of movement, but I didn't do too much," he said. That won't be the approach next month when training camp begins. "Come training camp, I'm ready to go, and I feel like I'm where I'm supposed to be. The experience is a great thing, but the experience tells me I can feel where I'm at and where I should be. I know exactly where I need to be. "Right now I'm right on par." The Cardinals will report for training camp on July 22. Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast.
