Rampant use of drones at Chikhale Waterfall raises alarm

Time of India7 days ago
Belagavi: The unchecked use of drones by tourists at Chikhale Waterfall — located within the Kanakumbi forest range of Khanapur taluk and falling under the eco-sensitive zone of the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary — is raising concerns among environmentalists and officials.
Despite prohibition under Environmental Protection Act, 1986, drones continue to be operated in the area, allegedly under the watch of forest department personnel.
The forest department reopened Chikhale Waterfall to tourists on June 21, allowing entry through tickets. The scenic spot, about 45 km from Belagavi, has recorded a rise in footfall following heavy rainfall that revived several waterfalls in Khanapur.
Visitors must undertake a 2-km trek from the designated parking zone to access the site.
Recently, the TOI reported the absence of adequate monitoring mechanisms to prevent tourists from taking risky selfies and videos at the waterfall's edge. This issue at Chikhale Waterfall echoes similar violations reported last year at Vajrapoha Falls, another site within the Bhimgad zone, where the illegal use of drones sparked public outcry.

Drones are banned in protected areas like tiger reserves, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and eco-sensitive zones because they pose threats to wildlife, compromise security. The sound and presence of drones are known to distress animals such as tigers, bears and deer, disrupting their natural behaviour, including feeding, mating and resting cycles.
Experts also warn that drones can be used to scout forest areas, track animal movement and monitor the activities of forest officials, potentially assisting poachers.
In addition to the ecological threat, drone misuse also raises privacy concerns of visitors.
Deputy conservator of forests and member secretary of the Bhimgad Eco-Sensitive Zone, Maria Christu Raja D, told TOI, "We check for restricted items, including drones, before permitting entry. However, there are nearby private lands and another entry point through a nearby settlement. People using drone could be entering from those areas."

Tiger safari at Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve likely to begin in October

Wildlife enthusiasts may finally get a long-awaited glimpse of tigers in their natural habitat at Rajasthan's Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve, with core-zone tiger safaris expected to kick off this October. Forest officials informed that the Tiger Conservation Plan (TCP), a comprehensive strategy detailing eco-tourism, wildlife management, and local community engagement, is in its final stages of approval. Submitted to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), the plan has not encountered any objections or required modifications yet. "The plan was reviewed by NTCA's four-member committee and is expected to receive final clearance soon," said a senior forest official. Once approved, controlled safari operations in the core area will begin, which will usher in a new chapter of eco-tourism in Ramgarh Vishdhari, he added. As of now, the reserve is home to six tigers, including two adult males, one adult female, a sub-adult male, and two cubs, making the upcoming safari a potentially thrilling experience for visitors. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How Much Does a Bali Vacation Really Cost? Roughly 20% of the reserve is expected to be opened for tourism, a move that will create employment opportunities for local communities and boost conservation-linked livelihoods. Safari routes have already been proposed, with one stretching from the Peepkhoda entry gate in Naitpur to the core area. Forest authorities are also planning the creation of four distinct safari zones, each with a specific tourist carrying capacity. Eight villages located within the reserve may be relocated post-approval to minimize human-animal conflict and support long-term conservation goals. With all eyes on the NTCA's final nod, Ramgarh Vishdhari stands ready to roar once again, this time, with visitors in tow.

Indian Railways To Revamp 5 Nashik Stations Ahead Of Kumbh Mela, Know More

Last Updated: With a Rs 1,011 crore boost, five railway stations in Nashik are getting a big makeover to manage massive pilgrim rush during Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Indian Railways has announced a major revamp of five key stations in Nashik district – Nashik Road, Devlali, Odha, Kasbe Sukene, and Kherwadi. Approved by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Rs 1,011 crore plan aims to improve passenger facilities and train handling capacity in time for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. As per TOI, during a review meeting, top railway officials including Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, evaluated detailed proposals presented by Central Railway's senior team. Which Stations Are Getting Upgraded? Devlali Station Devlali, located near Nashik Road station on the Mumbai side, will see the addition of three new platforms. Two of them will manage traffic from Mumbai and Nashik separately, while the third will cater to passing trains. The station will also get six new lines – including pit lines, sick lines, and stabilising lines – for better train maintenance and parking. Nashik Road Station With space limitations, the focus here is on adding two parking lines. Platform 1 will be extended to fit 24-coach trains, and Platform 4 will be upgraded to serve trains from both directions. This station will become a key holding area during the mela, with five new stabilising lines and a third platform. During non-mela periods, Odha will be used for agricultural and goods transport. Kasbe Sukene & Kherwadi Stations Kasbe Sukene's platform will be extended to handle 22-coach trains, double the current capacity. Kherwadi will get two new platforms to accommodate 24-coach trains. What Other Facilities Are Being Added? Every station will be equipped with a special 'Mela Tower'—a hub for CCTV surveillance, announcements, control rooms, security, and large holding areas for pilgrims. Wider foot overbridges will also be built for safer and quicker movement. When Will It All Be Ready? About half of the work has already started. The rest will begin soon, with land acquisition likely from January 2026. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
