
Ashura holidays of medics cancelled in Punjab
The hospitals administrations have been advised to enhance coordination with rescue, police and district authorities to ensure immediate response in case of an emergency. The hospitals were also instructed to make preparations to ensure the availability of space in wards in case of an emergency.
According to sources in the health department, the hospital emergency departments and trauma centres will remain on high alert and senior professors will be available for duty along with the staff. Availability of medicines will also be ensured during the processions on both days.
The sources said instructions in this regard had been issued to the major district hospitals, including the big healthcare facilities in Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Multan, Gujrat and Narowal.
The provincial health minister will visit the Mayo Hospital, Services Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and other healthcare facilities along the route of the main procession in Lahore. Monitoring teams will inspect the arrangements and services in the hospitals in the districts across the province.
The Punjab government has instructed the doctors and nurses to perform their duties round the clock on Muharram 9 and 10. Ambulance services and blood banks have also been ordered to ensure preparations to perform special duties on the two days.
The government has constituted the monitoring committees to check the arrangements in the hospitals, while departmental action will be taken against the medical officials found absent from duty.
The health authorities have cancelled the holidays of the senior doctors, medical officers, paramedical and nursing staff as part of arrangements for the observance of Ashura.
In addition to keeping operational their wards, emergency and outpatient departments, the major hospitals will also set up medical camps along the procession routes.
"We have issued an alert to all district headquarters and teaching hospitals and the doctors and other staff will be on duty. The professors will also remain present in hospitals," said Punjab health department spokesman Syed Hamad Raza.

Privatisation deadline for health units extended

PHOTO: FILE The District Health Authority has extended the deadline to July 11 for the privatisation of 1,418 Basic Health Units and Rural Health Centres in its third privatisation phase. Initially, applications were invited until July 7, but due to low submission ratesattributed to the Muharram holidaysthe deadline has now been extended. The privatisation process is scheduled to be completed by July 31. Following the sale of these health units, all government-approved positions are being cancelled. Notices have also begun to be issued to doctors and nurses instructing them to vacate government housing. The health department plans to complete the privatisation of major public hospitals in Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala, and Rawalpindi by June 30, 2026. The process has already begun in Lahore. According to government policy, only district headquarters hospitals and tehsil-level hospitals will remain under public control. All other public hospitals will be privatised in phases. To date, 23,000 BHUs and RHCs have already been sold, and all temporary and contract staff at these facilities have been laid off.

Inspections during Ashura: PFA seals 24 beverage units, discards substandard drinks
LAHORE: Special enforcement teams of the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) sealed 24 beverage units and discarded thousands of litres of unsafe drinks during a large scale inspection drive launched in connection with Ashura. The inspection campaign was carried out to ensure the provision of safe beverages and water at sabeels across the province. Food safety teams inspected 720 beverage, water and juice units. A total of 24 units were sealed over violations of food safety laws while 216 units were fined Rs5.419 million. Moreover, 228 units were issued improvement notices due to unhygienic practices. DG PFA Asim Javaid said that food safety teams discarded 7,400 litres of juice and beverages over 1,000 litres of water and more than 80kg of expired chemical ingredients. These included prohibited and expired substances being used in drinks meant for sabeels. He said teams found serious violations such as poor hygiene conditions, insect infestation and lack of medical certificates of food handlers. He added that mixtures prepared with banned and expired ingredients were also recovered and discarded on the sp Director general further stated that inspections are being carried out in two shifts daily by specially deployed Muharram food safety teams. He said that checking of sabeels and langar points near majalis and roadside camps is underway, along with public awareness efforts.
