Sabalenka and Gauff crash out in Cincinnati as Alcaraz survives to reach semis
Top seed and defending champion Sabalenka had no answer for Elena Rybakina, falling to the 2022 Wimbledon champion 6-1, 6-4.
Reigning French Open champion Gauff had 16 double faults in a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 exit at the hands of seventh-seeded Italian Jasmine Paolini.
Spain's second-ranked Alcaraz had his difficulties, but he broke Rublev in the final game of a tense duel to emerge a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 winner and will face third-seeded Alexander Zverev, who brought fifth-seeded Toronto champion Ben Shelton's run to an end with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Zverev earned a 4-1 lead in the second set as Shelton angrily tossed his racquet on the changeover, and the 2021 champion polished off the win on a second match point. He now has 24 hours to try to get fit.
"I'm not feeling too great now, but I have a day to get fresh," Zverev said. "I hope to be at 100%.
"I'm not sure what happened. I felt very well, but at the end of the first set, it got progressively worse. But I'll do all I can to give it a shot tomorrow."
Alcaraz was broken while serving for victory at 5-4 in the final set against 11th-ranked Rublev, but he found his focus and used his trademark grit to come through three games later.
He sealed the triumph as an emotional Rublev hit an eighth double-fault on match point.
"I maintained the positive thoughts even if I lost focus a bit in the second set," said Alcaraz, whose five titles so far this year include the French Open as well as Masters 1000 trophies in Monte Carlo and Rome.
Rybakina fired 11 aces en route to a fifth career victory over Sabalenka in 12 meetings.
She avenged a loss to the Belarusian in Berlin two months ago and booked a semi-final meeting with Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek – a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Anna Kalinskaya.
Rybakina was aided by 11 aces as she reached her first Cincinnati semi-final.
"I'm happy with the serve. It was the key today," Rybakina said. "I served really well."
"If she had been serving well, it would have been a totally different match," she acknowledged.
Rybakina has won her last three matches against Swiatek, all played this season.
But Swiatek was feeling confident after downing Kalinskaya in what she called "the best match I played here."
"I'm happy that I'm progressing during the tournament," Swiatek said.
Gauff, the 2023 Cincinnati champion, had looked well on her way after a quick first set against Paolini.
But her mistakes caught up with her as she was broken eight times by the Italian, who overcame plenty of errors of her own as well as a twisted ankle suffered early in the third set.
"It was so tough at the start, I was running and trying to put the ball inside the court," Paolini said. "I started to feel the ball better."
"I fought for every point and stayed in the match," added the Italian, who will face Veronika Kudermetova for a place in the final.

MANCHESTER: Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim said his side can beat anyone in the Premier League despite beginning their season with a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal at Old Trafford. The Italian defender pounced on a mistake by United's stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. The Red Devils had 22 shots and enjoyed over 60 percent possession. But an expensively-assembled new £200 million (US$271 million) forward line of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and substitute Benjamin Sesko failed to find a way through against the Premier League's best defence for the past two seasons. Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table. But Amorim insisted the performance showed tangible signs of progress, even if it was not reflected in the scoreline. "We need to win games but that was completely different to last season," said the Portuguese coach. "We were the better team. In the end we lose the game, but really proud of the performance. "We proved today we can win any game in the Premier League, against a great team like Arsenal." After finishing second for the past three seasons, the pressure is on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to deliver the club's first league title since 2004. The Spaniard was left to depend on his reliable defence and goalkeeper David Raya to secure a huge three points as the visitors never got going as in attack. "Big result," said Arteta. "First game of the season at Old Trafford when you feel they are building something." He conceded his side will have to be much better if they are to rival Liverpool and Manchester City for the title. "It certainly gives you momentum and confidence when you are not at your (top) standards. "Today we weren't, to be fair. The team has to find that resilience through nine, 10 months of the season. The new arrivals have lifted the mood around Old Trafford and the majority of the 75,000 fans in attendance could at least leave encouraged by the display of Amorim's men. Cunha and Mbeumo unsettled Arsenal's normally unflappable centre-back pairing of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba early on. United were undone by an error from Bayindir, deputising for the injured Andre Onana. The Turkish international meekly flapped at an inswinging Declan Rice corner on 13 minutes, allowing Calafiori to head into an unguarded net. Patrick Dorgu came closest to a United reply before half-time with a powerful effort from distance that hit the post. Mbeumo and Cunha saw tame efforts easily saved by Raya, while the Spaniard did brilliantly to divert another Cunha shot across the goal. Arsenal had held interest in Sesko for well over a year before instead pursuing Viktor Gyokeres as the solution at number nine. The Swede had a quiet Premier League debut and was replaced before the hour by Kai Havertz. Sesko made his entrance moments later, to a hero's welcome after rejecting the advances of Newcastle for the lure of the 20-time English champions. United continued to enjoy the better of the play without finding the finish. Mbeumo's powerful header was expertly clawed out by Raya.

Amorim: New-look MU can 'win any game'
MANCHESTER: Manchester United lost to Arsenal in their opener on Sunday but Ruben Amorim remained full of optimism and said his rebuilt team can now beat anybody in the Premier League as the club try to put last season's woeful 15th-place finish behind them. Riccardo Calafiori headed home from an early corner to give Arsenal a 1-0 win, with a weak challenge from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir one of United's few mistakes on an afternoon that sent their fans home from Old Trafford feeling positive. "We have players to win any game in the Premier League," said Amorim, flashing a rare smile after the scowl he wore for most of last season. "We were more aggressive than last year. We went one against one all the game and we pressed high. We had quality with the ball." Close-season signings Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo injected pace and creativity into United's attack, with the ex-Wolves man, who had three shots on target, arguably the best player on the pitch. "We did a lot things right," Amorim said. "We were more aggressive and brave. In certain moments I think Bryan and Cunha helped a lot. We stuck to the plan even when the stadium was nervous, we continued to play the way we played and that will help us in the future. "(The fans) want that feeling again. We go to Old Trafford and we are not going to get bored. We need to win more than last season but they want to see something and feel something." United also looked more composed defensively than last term, but the error from their Turkish keeper begged the question about that position in Amorim's team. Arsenal's William Saliba backed into Bayindir, who feebly batted the ball with one hand into the path of Italian Calafiori for an easy close-range header. Amorim said United needed to match Arsenal's physicality on the corner. "If you can watch the goal, I think (players) are allowed to do a lot of things in the corners. We need to do the same," he said. "But when you touch that way the goalkeeper, he needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not to push players, or he chooses to push players and let the ball past. "But again, (it) is the rules. If he's allowed, we need to do the same thing." Bayindir was selected ahead of usual starter Andre Onana, who has had only three training sessions after recovering from injury. "That was a tough match. At the beginning the level was pretty crazy, we played so fast that sometimes we couldn't even run to the second ball because we played so fast," Swiatek said during her on-court interview. "But I was there to play with intensity and good quality and I am super happy with the performance. I served much better so for sure it helped and I wouldn't change anything." Ninth seed Rybakina used a cross-court forehand that caught the line for a break and then held for a 5-3 lead in the first set but a laser-focused Swiatek came back from the precipice and attacked the Kazakh's serve to draw level at 5-5. From there, the Wimbledon champion held serve before wrapping up the opener when she broke for a second time after a Rybakina backhand attempt came up well short. Rybakina, who enjoyed a swift victory over world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the previous round, was broken for a third time early in the second set after a backhand error put Swiatek ahead 3-1. Swiatek faced some push-back from Rybakina three games later but dug deep to recover from 15-40 down to protect her serve and reach 5-2 before wrapping it up on serve when Rybakina sent a forehand return long. Swiatek, who has not lost a set in Cincinnati, will next face the winner of Sunday's other semi-final between seventh seed Jasmine Paolini and Veronika Kudermetova.
