Brutal reason Matthew McConaughey lost out on Titanic role

Metro5 days ago
Late Titanic producer Jon Landau has claimed that Matthew McConaughey lost out on playing Jack Dawson due to his Southern drawl.
The 55-year-old Hollywood star was one of the contenders to play the doomed lover who was ultimately portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio opposite Kate Winslet's Rose.
The megahit blockbuster about the ill-fated ship and its catastrophic sinking in 1912 could have looked very different had the Interstellar star clinched the job.
In his posthumous memoir – The Bigger Picture: My Blockbuster Life & Lessons Learned Along The Way – Landau recalled what went wrong during the actor's audition despite Winslet being 'taken with Matthew, his presence and charm.'
In an excerpt of the November book obtained by Matthew Belloni's What I'm Hearing newsletter, Landau wrote that Texan actor executed his audition in a Southern accent.
Director James Cameron then allegedly told McConaughey: 'That's great, now let's try it a different way', to which he responded: 'No. That was pretty good. Thanks.'
Landau – also behind the Avatar series – then added: 'Let's just say, that was it for McConaughey.'
In 2021, the successful movie star recalled his audition with Winslet on Rob Lowe's podcast Literally! with Rob Lowe.
'So I went and read with Kate Winslet, and it was not one of the auditions — they filmed it so it was like into screen test time.
'After we left, you know, it was one of those ones where they, like, followed me, and when we got outside, they were like, 'That went great.' I mean, kind of, like, hugs. I really thought it was going to happen. It did not.'
He also refuted the rumours that he had been offered the role and turned it down, even going so far as to confirm it with Cameron to make sure he hadn't accidentally missed out on the role of a lifetime.
Of course, that didn't prevent him from having a thriving career with an Oscar for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club and lead roles in hit movies like How to Lose A Guy in Ten Days.
Oscar-winning producer Landau died aged 63 in July 2024 and was hailed an 'extraordinary talent'.
At the time, Winslet was one of several who penned a tribute to him in which she called him 'the kindest and best of men'. More Trending
She added: 'He was a man who was rich with compassion and exceptional at supporting and nurturing teams of phenomenal creative people.
'His strength in life was knowing the importance of family, at home and at work. He was always full of smiles and gratitude. I can't believe I am writing this, can't believe he is gone.'
The Titanic movie has been shrouded in lore since its release almost three decades ago – not least around the touch-too-small door that Jack eventually drifts away from and dies at the end of the movie.
And it continues to be a considerable force in the movie industry, grossing a whopping $2.2billion (£1.6billion) worldwide, staying one of the highest-earning movies ever.

Customers revolt after family-friendly restaurant chain unveils bold new look

Cracker Barrel has found itself in hot water as the cherished food chain flaunts its new look - and loyal customers bemoan the lack of classic rustic charm. Locations of the Southern-themed restaurant and gift shop have been ditching their nostalgic and eclectic interiors for more modern decor since last year. A video shared by Cracker Barrel last August captioned 'New look, same Cracker Barrel!! We can't wait for you to visit' shows a Mount Juliet, Tennessee location - one of the first to undergo drastic renovations. 'We might have refreshed some things and updated a little bit, but don't worry, we're still Cracker Barrel!' a smiling district manager, Brent, said in the clip. Brent enthusiastically detailed how the gift store and dining room were made brighter, the furniture was replaced and the iconic lattices were traded for sleek bookshelves. Sound buffers were added to the ceiling to make the dining room quieter, but Brent assured that the essence of the Cracker Barrel remained in tact, with a wall of 'staples' featuring a deer head, a clock and other knick-knacks over a fireplace. While the eager manager said guests were loving the new and improved restaurant, the post's comment section demonstrates otherwise. And while these remodeling pursuits began more than a year ago, people are now starting to pick up on the extreme changes, forcefully pushing for Cracker Barrel to stick to its roots. 'Change it back, now!' one user commented under the Mount Juliet post from last summer. 'Exactly nobody wanted this,' another critic of the redesign chimed in. One man, who believes the chain has strayed too far from its Southern appeal, wrote: 'What's next? Change the name to Yankee Barrel! I will not be returning.' 'Now it looks like any other restaurant,' another patron disappointedly added. Other clips featuring clutter-free Crack Barrels have caught flack as well. In a Sunday video about a dessert menu item, the S'mores Skillet, customers caught a glimpse of the minimalistic shop and dining room in the background. 'Can we please go back to the original look? The nostalgia is gone,' one woman wrote, adding a frowning emoji. 'Surely there is another approach to bringing in more customers.' 'Absolutely hate the renovations. Please do not take away the character that makes it so special and cozy,' someone pleaded. 'I don't want another bland box store type restaurant. Keep the original looks.' Along with commenting on Cracker Barrel's social media pages, people have been sharing their strong remodeling opinions in TikToks devoted to slamming the new design. While social media is apparently in a frenzy over the change, not everyone is repulsed by the updated interior design. Some users have actually swooped in to defend the chain, which was founded in Tennessee in 1969. 'Looks great and fresh,' one proponent said about the Mount Juliet site. Another said it looked 'much more open than cramped.' Others said how the classically cramped nature of the chain made getting around a tad bit tricky. 'I'm not mad at it. The lobby was always a nightmare of crowded, cluttered 'kitch'. Love an open floor plan!' some explained. Earlier this year, Cracker Barrel chief marketing officer Sarah Moore told Fox News Digital the chain had been playing with 'various levels of remodels.' 'We've been very transparent about our goal of making our stores feel brighter and even more welcoming than they already are, while maintaining that country hospitality and charm that we're known for,' she told the outlet. Moore also said customer feedback would be factored into how extreme the changes get, as the 'physical guest experience' is essential to Cracker Barrel. 'Items like our rocking chairs, our biscuits, our peg games, antiquities on the wall, none of that is going away,' she assured. 'We're just looking at ways to freshen up the experience so that we can open our door a bit wider for more guests.' Cracker Barrel's CEO Julie Felss Masino took over the massive brand in 2023 after the previous president, Sandra Cochran, stepped down. The controversial remodeling comes as a part of a comprehensive plan of 'driving relevancy, delivering food and an experience guests love, and growing profitability,' outlined last year. 'I am excited about our strategic transformation plans to drive relevancy, deliver food and experiences guests love, and grow profitability,' Masino said at the time. 'Cracker Barrel is an iconic brand with an exceptionally strong foundation, and I firmly believe our plans will allow us to capitalize on our strengths and deliver long-term success.' The company said in March it aimed to completely remodel roughly 30 locations out of the hundreds of Cracker Barrels by this summer.

Leonardo DiCaprio's 'covered face' sparks wave of bizarre conspiracy theories

Leonardo DiCaprio's face has got people talking—but perhaps not for the reasons you'd expect. The Hollywood star first achieved international fame with roles in Romeo & Juliet (1996) and as Titanic heartthrob Jack in 1997, going on to become one of the world's highest-paid actors and the recipient of many prestigious awards. So, given how instantly recognisable the Oscar winner is, it's no surprise he likes to conceal his identity sometimes to avoid attracting crowds. However, fans are starting to notice a trend, leading to a wild conspiracy theory that the person we've been seeing at some huge A-list events… might not have been Leo at all. In June, Leo, 50, joined Kim Kardashian, Orlando Bloom, and Sydney Sweeney in Venice for the wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez. Naturally, the whole thing was a lavish, very public affair, but it seems Leo had hopes of keeping a low profile, as he was photographed covering his face. The Revenant star pulled a black baseball cap so far down that his face was not visible at all while he roamed the Italian streets, covering his mouth with his hand. Dressed in casual attire of a white shirt and navy jacket, if you didn't know it was Leo, well, you probably wouldn't have known it was Leo, prompting questions among social media users about whether he sent a body double out in his place. Fuelling the theories, Instagram user @vickymego commented under snaps from the getaway: 'If Leonardo DiCaprio was gonna spend the whole event hiding under a cap, then what was the point of even showing up?' And after Vogue Magazine shared a video of Leo heading to the ceremony in his tux, also bowing his head to prevent his face from showing as he climbed into a waiting boat taxi, the rumours only intensified. 'What plastic surgery has he had done?', commented @isaidwhatisaid655. @scarlettmaroon4 joked: 'oops someone has gotten older and needs to hide it with a cap🤭'. 'he is losing his hair that's why', @tehpengzz speculated on the reasons for the hat. Several others declared that the man in the footage was 'not him', suggesting that 'maybe it's someone else'. Plenty also flocked to his defence, declaring that Leo is simply 'tired of the paparazzi', having been in the limelight since a young age. Although the cynical were out in force too, suggesting that the proud environmental activist felt 'embarrassed' to be at the billionaire's wedding and wanted to 'hide his hypocrisy'. This isn't the first time he's covered his face, though—far from it, in fact. The Wolf of Wall Street lead has been pictured utilising various methods of disguise in the past, whether it be a cap or something else. Dating back to 2004, Leo has shielded his face from photographers using a puffer jacket, a traditional Venetian mask in 2013, and an umbrella at the US Open in 2015. He's also frequently used sunglasses, hoodies, and his mobile phone to prevent the world from getting a glimpse of him. As for what he's said about his unsuccessful attempts at hiding in plain sight, Leo has admitted that losing his anonymity has been a downfall of his astronomical stardom. Speaking to Esquire in 2016 for a profile piece, the Golden Globe winner shared: 'I really didn't understand what fame was, and I didn't understand what being in a giant hit was, and I didn't understand what a giant hit Titanic was compared to other giant hits. 'There was no rule book. There was nobody to navigate me through the experience of being watched all the time, and nobody to tell me how to be normal when everybody is acting and looking at me differently.' The Don't Look Up star added: 'Look, if you're not careful about it, it can develop into a social anxiety. It's like, what's going to happen? What photographer is going to jump out where? What kind of thing am I being set up for? You try to talk yourself out of it, but you're never used to it.' But don't get it twisted, as while he might not always want to be front-page news, Leo has repeatedly insisted he's thankful for what he has. He previously told 20/20's Barbara Walters: 'I'm not at all going to sit here and say that I'm not completely grateful. 'I feel completely blessed for everything that has happened in my career.' Leo, as famous for his dating life as he is for his movies, is currently in a relationship with girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti, to whom he was first linked in 2023. While insights he offers into his romances, typically with younger women, are rare, he once said he wouldn't rule out settling down. 'That time will come when that time comes,' declared the famous bachelor. 'The truth is, you can't predict marriage. You can't plan it. It's just going to happen when it happens.' Got a story?
