Malay Mail21-07-2025
PUTRAJAYA, July 21 — The Ministry of Finance (Treasury) has been instructed to explore ways to enhance the capabilities of pondok institutions, including upgrading existing facilities and improving the curriculum to better align with current needs.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the move is crucial to ensure students are not only grounded in religious knowledge but also equipped to face contemporary challenges,
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, gave his assurance that the traditional religious syllabus will remain intact. However, it will be complemented with elements such as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), technology, and artificial intelligence (AI).
'We will not interfere with the existing syllabus of pondok institutions, but we will incorporate new components such as TVET and AI.
'It is not about changing the system, but to complement and enhance it with elements that reflect current demands,' he said during a gathering with staff of the Prime Minister's Department here today.

13MP programmes for Sabah align with state's development blueprint, says Hajiji

KOTA KINABALU: Development programmes and fundings for Sabah under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) strongly aligns with the state's development blueprint under Halatuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ). "It also clearly reflects federal support to Sabah under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim," Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said. In welcoming it, he noted that several high-impact projects proposed by the state government had been included in the 13MP. Among the proposed development projects were the expansion of critical utilities (water, sewerage, transmission), strategic infrastructure (roads, flood mitigation, health) and Blue Economy Hub. Under the 13MP, the Federal Government will also prioritise the Sabah-Sarawak Kalimantan road network which augured well with the shifting of Indonesia's capital to Nusantara in East Kalimantan, he said. The others were intensive poverty alleviation strategies and support for digital transformation and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) resilience. "The present State Government has set up a plan to ensure Sabah will continue to progress," he said.

Thai DPM Pichai confident of positive outcome from US tariff negotiations, awaits response tonight (July 31)

BANGKOK: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira on Thursday (July 31) provided an update on the ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States, revealing that Thailand had submitted its final draft of the tariff proposal. He expects to receive an unofficial response on the matter later this evening, ahead of the critical August 1, 2025 deadline. 'We've been working on this since early this morning, maintaining continuous communication with the US. We've addressed their feedback from yesterday and are now fine-tuning the details. It's a delicate matter, but we're doing our best. While it's challenging, I'm confident we will receive good news tonight,' said Pichai. He explained that while the result would not be officially confirmed tonight, it would serve as a signal that the uncertainties are diminishing, providing Thailand with clearer direction for planning its economy for the second half of the year. Pichai emphasised that the proposal was not based on concessions from Thailand alone, but rather the result of careful and comprehensive negotiations that aimed at a "win-win" situation for both countries. The proposal includes reducing tariffs on certain imports, which Thailand argued is not a new issue, as the country already has Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with several nations under similar terms. He also mentioned that Thailand has proposed the purchase of goods it already needs, such as items it cannot produce domestically or does not have sufficient quantities of, and only if the prices are competitive. In addition, Thailand has suggested joint investment cooperation between both nations, especially in areas of US interest, such as infrastructure and advanced technology. Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs), including regulatory complexities and approval processes, were also discussed, with Thailand acknowledging that these obstacles needed to be addressed regardless of the tariff issue, as they hinder the country's competitiveness. Pichai further stated that if the response from the US is favourable, it would be a positive signal for Thailand's economy, exports, and short-to-medium-term investments. However, if the outcome is less favourable, he urged the public to understand that the Thai team had worked thoroughly and carefully on all aspects. The government has already prepared measures to support affected sectors, including improving the competitiveness of small businesses, supporting the manufacturing sector, and enhancing cost structures to remain competitive with other Asean countries. Lavaron Sangsnit, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, also confirmed that Thailand's final proposal had been submitted to the US, with no further amendments being made. He expressed hope for a response later this evening, adding, 'We're waiting for the outcome today, and I believe it will be good news.' The Ministry of Finance and the negotiation team are fully prepared and confident that the proposal will meet the needs of both economic and trade cooperation, as well as foster long-term collaboration, he said. - The Nation/ANN

Backbenchers expresses full support for 13MP

KUALA LUMPUR: The Backbenchers Club (BBC) has expressed full support for the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament today. BBC in a statement today described the 13MP as a manifestation of the government's commitment to realising the Madani Economy's aspirations, which seek to uplift the people's standard of living and restructure the nation's economy. Themed "Redesigning Development", the 13MP outlines three main dimensions involving a high-income and sustainable economy, quality and inclusive living, and environmental sustainability. "BBC believes the government's data-driven approach in formulating policies, as reflected in the 13MP, represents an important shift towards more transparent and accountable governance," it said. The group also welcomed the government's focus on addressing socio-economic disparities between urban and rural areas, ensuring that development benefits are shared across all layers of society, regardless of race, religion, or geography. "As government supporters in the Dewan Rakyat, BBC will continue to play an active role in ensuring that the implementation of the 13MP runs smoothly, is closely monitored, and reviewed periodically to ensure it does not deviate from its original goals," the statement added. BBC expressed confidence that under Anwar's leadership, Malaysia is on the right track to not only become a high-income nation by 2030 but also one that upholds human values and provides a high quality of life for its people.
