Car catches fire on busy Scots motorway as emergency crews race to scene
Parts of the motorway are closed or restricted due to the incident.
A car has caught fire on a major Scots motorway, leaving part of it closed off.
The horror incident happened just before 12.30pm on Sunday, June 15, on the M8 in Lanarkshire.
The westbound off-slip for junction six at Newhouse has been shut to allow firefighters to extinguish the blaze. One lane of the motorway has also been "restricted" on approach.
Police and paramedics were also dispatched to the scene, but it is not yet known whether anybody has been injured.
Shocking footage shared with our sister title Glasgow Live shows firefighters battling the blaze, with thick grey smoke billowing from the vehicle.
Kimberley Collins, who witnessed the fire, said: "When we were travelling, from Glasgow to Edinburgh, we could see smoke and we weren't sure what side of the motorway it was coming from.
"As we got closer the smoke was getting thicker and the cars were starting to slow down, traffic began to build up.
"Shortly after, two police cars formed a rolling road block on the westbound carriageway where the burning car was. As we continued driving another fire engine and road recovery truck passed us on the westbound carriageway.
"Not every day you see something like that! Hope everyone involved is safe and well done to the emergency services for all their hard work."

Motorists have been urged to use alternative routes for their journeys.
In a post on social media, Traffic Scotland said: "Off slip remains closed, one lane is currently restricted on approach due to vehicle fire.
"Road users are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are in attendance. Update s to come."

De Meo is the man behind Renault's Renaulution business plan which aimed to restore profitability while turning the carmaker into a next-gen auto company. The plan paid off, with the French firm posting a record operating profit last year of 4.26bn euros. During de Meo's rein, the Italian oversaw the launch of a number of SUVs, the resurrection of the Renault 5 as an electric vehicle. The 58-year-old also helped turn the Alpine into an electric performance brand. De Meo is set to leave on July 15, with Renault Group hunting for a new CEO as part of what the auto giant described as their "already defined succession plan". Sources in both the UK and on the continent have linked the departing de Meo with a move into the luxury goods market. There is speculation he will be appointed the new chief exec of Kering, who also own Balenciaga and McQueen. In a statement, de Meo said: "There comes a time in one's life when one knows the job is done. Homeowners who park multiple cars outside of their home are most likely to fall foul of the little-known law. Drivers could be reported to their local authority and hit with a hefty fine if they are caught breaking the rules. According to experts motorists should always ensure no vehicles overhang their driveway and block part of the pavement. This tends to happen when families attempt to squeeze all of their vehicles onto the one driveway. However, blocking just a tiny part of the pavement could leave someone open to trouble. Pavements should not be blocked and should always be left clear to allow people with prams and those with mobility issues to pass safely without having to go onto the road, according to Birmingham Live. Graham Conway, motoring expert at Select Car leasing, explained: "It may come as a surprise, but a cluttered or overloaded driveway may lead to a fine, particularly if items or parked vehicles are spilling out onto public pathways or blocking visibility for other road users. Motoring experts at Yell said: "It's a habit many drivers don't think twice about – pulling straight into the driveway after a long day, ready to head inside and relax. "But did you know that this common parking manoeuvre could actually go against Highway Code guidance? According to the rules of the road, drivers should reverse into their driveways rather than driving in forward and reversing out later. While there's no specific law against it, reversing onto a busy road can be seen as careless and inconsiderate driving, especially if it causes an obstruction or puts other road users at risk. "Motorists could face an unlimited fine and receive between three and nine penalty points on their licence for certain offences. The reasoning is simple – safety and visibility.
