Murder victim was ‘beloved' father and grandfather, family say

A man who was killed in Co Down has been described by his family as a 'beloved' father and grandfather. The body of Stephen Brannigan, who was in his 50s, was found in a house in Marian Park in Downpatrick on Sunday afternoon. Police are investigating if his death is linked to an attack on a priest in the town, Fr John Murray. A 30-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. In a statement, Mr Brannigan's family said: 'In the midst of our shock, pain and total heartbreak at the news of the brutal murder of our beloved dad, grandad, son and brother Stephen yesterday, we want to convey our sincere thanks to all those who have surrounded us with such love and care in the hours that have followed. 'We want to express our particular thanks to those who organised and gathered for the beautiful prayer vigil in St Brigid's Church in the town on Sunday evening. 'It means so much to us at this difficult time and reflects the very special people who make up the Marian Park and wider Downpatrick community.' The family said they wanted to convey their concern for Fr Murray, who remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital. The statement added: 'Fr John is highly respected by our family and by all in our community. 'It is so typical of his kindness that he was willing to reach out in trust to someone he believed was in distress, despite the obvious risk to himself. 'With so many others, we pray for his full recovery and thank him for his own prayers for us which he has conveyed through the priests of the parish. 'Stephen was known among his neighbours and friends as someone who was always willing to help out, ready to do whatever needed to be done for the good of others. 'Even the day before he died, he was tending the graves of friends and neighbours, as he did, almost every day, the grave of his late wife Dorenda, who died five years ago from cancer. 'Stephen faced many difficult issues in his life. We know his life was not perfect. But for us, he was our dad, our grandad, our son and our brother. 'His rock through all of this was Dorenda. We pray they will be reunited now in perfect peace and love.'

Beauty queen, 35, was abducted, hog tied and weighed down with rocks before suffering nightmarish death

A beauty queen has suffered a nightmarish death after being abducted from a grocery store in what investigators believe was a 'premeditated attack'. Acquene Arradaza, 35, was snatched by three armed men while shopping in Ormoc City, the Philippines on July 31. Police believe the former Miss Matag-ob pageant winner was murdered, hogtied and weighed down with rocks before her captors dumped her body in the sea. Investigators were alerted of her disappearance on August 4 after a group of local fisherman found her decomposing body drifting in the water off the coast of the seaside village of Barangay 99 Diit. Arradaza was found naked, gagged and blindfolded. Her feet and hands had been bound and a bicycle lock was tied around her neck. Police say her face was covered with black cloth and wrapped with duct tape. Her body was also bound to two sacks that were meant to weigh her down to the bottom of the sea. The alleged abduction was only reported by relatives on Monday, the same day her body was discovered. Officials say Arradaza may have been able to be saved had her loved ones filed a missing persons report sooner. Surveillance camera footage captured the moment Arradaza was abducted from a store in Valencia, Ormoc City as she was buying groceries on July 31. A black Toyota Wigo with license plate number 1799 pulled over near the shoulder before three men stormed out and forcibly bundled the model into the vehicle. The suspects then quickly fled scene, travelling in the direction of Kananga, Leyte. The same vehicle was seen heading toward Tacloban City shortly after the abduction, The Manila Times reports. Her body was spotted in the sea by local fisherman five days later, having already begun to decay. 'The body was already in the bloated stage and it was naked,' Police Major Shenna Layog, acting commander of the Tacloban City Police Station 2, said. 'The tongue was already sticking out. It was also seen that the neck, hands and feet were tied. The face was covered with black cloth and even wrapped with duct tape.' Arradaza's family confirmed her identity through the tattoos on her back. Police are now working to track down the suspects and investigate a motive for what appears to be a targeted and 'premeditated attack'. The model's mother Vilma Arradaza is now campaigning for justice and urging Philippines Sen. Raffy Tulfo to help with her daughter's case The model's sister Patricia Arradaza reported her missing on August 4 around 8am. She also revealed the beauty queen had spoken with a man named Pay-ap Drilon the same morning she was abducted. Ormoc City police spokesman Lieutenant Nova Tan criticized the family for not reporting the incident earlier. 'We could have intercepted the suspects' vehicle at the city or municipal borders if they filed a report earlier,' Tan said. Arradaza's brother, Eros Arradaza, 30, was killed in a gunfight with police during a drug bust in the same province last year. The model's mother Vilma Arradaza is now campaigning for justice and urging Filipino politicians to help with her daughter's case.

Scout group on summer camp bombarded with abuse by angry local residents after they mistook them for illegal immigrants

Cops are looking into 'inappropriate and offensive language' in social media posts DIB DIB D'OH! Scout group on summer camp bombarded with abuse by angry local residents after they mistook them for illegal immigrants THIRTY young Scouts on an annual summer camping trip were subject to a barrage of abuse — after being mistaken for illegal immigrants. Muddled locals yelled at the Scottish under-18s, who travelled 400 miles to be there, because they thought from their accents they must be asylum seekers. Several people posted abusive comments. It was also alleged that police were guarding the supposed migrants at the CRAI Scout Activity Park. One witness said of the abuse: 'It was horrible. All the usual rubbish going on about illegal immigrants flooding the South Wales Valleys.' Advertisement A Scouts Cymru spokesman said: 'We are aware of a racially aggravated incident targeting under-18s who were leaving after visiting our activity centre and are working with police to address this situation. 'We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all on site.' Temporary Chief Supt Jason White, of Gwent Police, confirmed the group shown in the video were visiting a 'frequently used' Scout camp — and many of them were children. He said the site was occasionally used for police dog training, adding: 'Officers aren't guarding the location.' The muddle comes after independent MP Rupert Lowe last week confused a group of charity rowers off Norfolk for small boat migrants. 3 Thirty Scouts on an annual summer camping trip were subject to a barrage of abuse — after being mistaken for illegal immigrants Credit: WNS
