Will Ferry living European dream with Dundee United as skipper declares 'this is the game' ahead of Rapid Vienna clash

Daily Record3 days ago
Ferry will captain United as they look to pull off a seismic Euro shock tomorrow night
Will Ferry always wanted to play for Manchester City in the Champions League but has admitted it is still a dream come true representing Dundee United in the Conference League.

Ferry is from a big City family that has seen them rise from the doldrums to European champions under Pep Guardiola.

But they have become hardcore Dundee United since Ferry made the move to Tannadice last summer.

His parents and others were in Luxembourg last month and Vienna this month and will be hoping their European adventure continues beyond Thursday' second leg with Rapid, with the tie currently evenly-poised at 2-2.
Ferry, who will captain United in the game, admitted: 'It is a bit cliched or cringey but it is something I have always dreamt about, although it was more Champions League.
'This is the Conference League but it is still Europe and it was something I always wanted to do as a kid.

'I used to watch City when they were still rubbish and they got into the Champions League. The whole family was all desperate to go and watch them play PSG and all that. For me, this is the game.'
'It is an experience I will never forget, especially walking out as captain. It is emotional.'
Ferry claimed it meant everything to him leading United out to a memorable draw in the Allianz Stadium last week. He was fully backed by the Ferry family and wants to give them and the United faithful even more to cheer about this week.

The left-back stated: 'My mum and dad were there.
'Even before the game, my mum was saying don't take it for granted because it was something I had dreamt of.
'They are massive football fans and used to go and watch City.

'They never thought they would be coming to see me in European competition. 'I know they are really proud as well.
'I think it was my gran and sister who were at home. 'They would have had the game on television and I am sure the dog was watching as well.'
The ex-Southampton player knows United need to be fully focused and on it if they want to get the win they need against Rapid.

Ferry insisted: 'We aren't getting carried away in the changing room, I can't emphasise that enough. 'Yes, we have come in and we are all happy but it was still a bit subdued because we know we still haven't achieved anything.
'The job is only half-done and we are not going to get carried away. There is not an inferiority complex, it is not there because we know we can do it.
'The first leg performance was confirmation of that. We are going into that game and some people might see us as underdogs.

"We will take that but we know we can match teams. We would never write ourselves off and we are never out.
'We have been behind twice and come back twice. We know if we do it right then we can match them and hopefully get through the tie.'
The good thing from Jim Goodwin 's point of view is that their strikers Zac Sapsford and Max Watters both scored and caused Rapid all sorts of problems in the first game.

The defender stated: 'Zac was involved in both of them and you can't ask for much more. (Owen) Stirton came on and caused chaos, which was what we needed him to do because we were under the cosh.
'It shows because it was through sheer grit and determination that we scored those two goals. We had chances but those goals were down to a bit of individual quality and good passing but with Zac it was sheer determination in the end.

'He ran himself into the ground and could hardly move at the end.
'He got his rewards at the end. 'He has been thrown in and now he has scored in Europe.
'I doubt three months ago he would have even thought that was a thing. We've got quality and it is just a case of putting it together and knitting certain relationships together. We are getting there.'

Scottish football's coefficient got a shot in the arm last week with United's draw and wins for Rangers and Hibs, against Viktoria Plzen and Partizan Belgrade, in particular. Ferry is hoping they can all fly the flag again this week.
He said: 'I am not sitting here hoping Hibs do this or that but it is good for the game in general. There are a lot of critics of the league.
'Maybe the football we play in Europe is maybe looked down on, but there is a bit of ignorance towards the league.
'We go out wanting to do the league and Scottish football proud. 'We want to stay in as long as we can to boost the coefficient. We want as many teams as possible competing in Europe.
'Hopefully, we are taking it on our back and showing we can compete.'
United have already added Danish midfielder Julius Eskesen from Haugesund but is unavailable for the second leg against Rapid.

Martin Odegaard responds to Arsenal legend who told Mikel Arteta he shouldn't be captain

Arsenal legend Tony Adams made headlines this week by telling Gunners boss Mikel Arteta to strip Martin Odegaard of the captaincy and give the armband to Declan Rice Martin Odegaard has staunchly defended his role as Arsenal captain after stinging criticism from Tony Adams. Club legend Adams took aim at Odegaard, 26, by claiming that the Gunners won't win the Premier League title so long as he's captain. ‌ The former Arsenal skipper urged Mikel Arteta to give the armband to team-mate Declan Rice, suggesting that the change would allow Odegaard to play with more freedom. But Adams won't get his way after the squad overwhelming voted for the Norwegian to remain as captain for the 2025-26 season. ‌ Now Odegaard has responded to Adams in an interview ahead of Sunday's curtain-raiser away to Manchester United. Asked about his style of leadership, the midfielder explained to Sky Sports: "It's a lot to be fair. It's a lot of small things. It's hard to describe it, it's more like a constant role you do. ‌ "There's always these small things you have to do. In general it's just how I see it is to get the best out of the team and how to give the team the right mindset. Help the players around you, get the best mindset in everyone. "I think before the game just on the pitch I do a little one (team talk) and inside the dressing room we have different people talking. It's not just me there's a lot of people sharing the responsibility and the manager does a lot as well. It's a shared thing. It's not just me all the time." Adams admitted during an event for Irish Independent that Odegaard wasn't his 'kind' of captain. "The call is to make Declan Rice the captain," the ex-Gunners defender began in a plea to Arteta. "I think Declan is my kind of captain, and it might free Odegaard up to play with a bit more freedom. Every now and again as a manager, you have to put someone who reflects you, who reflects the football club that you think can actually take you to the next level. "He (Arteta) has got an opportunity this year to actually turn into a winner. To win league titles, you have to be a [Jurgen] Klopp, you have to be a [Sir Alex] Ferguson. You have to lead by example, you have to be a winner, you have to go about your business. And that reflects in your captain. ‌ "And I'm seeing Declan Rice as a captain but I'm saying to Arteta: Come on, step up now. It's your time to be a winning manager and a fantastic manager, because you're not going to win the league with Odegaard as captain." Arteta, though, believes that there's 'no question' that Odegaard should be captain. "Well my opinion is clear and it's not just my opinion, it's all the staff and especially the players." the Gunners boss explained. ‌ "I asked them to vote the captain and I got the result yesterday. And by a mile, by a big, big 100 miles, everybody choosing the same person, which is Martin Odegaard, and which is the most clear sign that you can have. "It's how they feel about who has to be their captain to defend, improve and win the matches that we want to win. So I think there's no question about that."

Jayden Meghoma to Rangers loan transfer agreed as details of Jefte deal revealed

A replacement for the Brazilian has already been found with the Brentford man heading north Rangers have agreed a loan deal for Brentford's Jayden Meghoma. ‌ The England youth international is travelling north to complete his move. ‌ The Light Blues made their move for the 19-year-old, as they are set to sell Jefte to Brazilian club Palmeiras. ‌ The deal is expected to be confirmed in the next 24 to 48 hours and will allow Rangers to name him as a wildcard signing for their Champions League play-off with Club Brugge. Sporting director Kevin Thelwell had Meghoma high on his left-back options. Brentford have high hopes for Meghoma, who they signed from Southampton last year. The Bees sent him on-loan to Preston North End and believe a move to the Scottish Premiership, where he will get European exposure is the next move. The left-back has been a problem position for Russell Martin having to switch the likes of Max Aarons over to the opposite side. Rangers are set to sell Jefte for a £6million fee with another six figures in add-ons to Palmeiras. The move will see Rangers make a ten-fold profit on the fee they paid to get him last summer to buyout APOEL's option, where he had been on loan from Fluminese. ‌ It sees Rangers make major money on a player brought to the club by former technical director Nils Koppen. The Ibrox side also have a 17.5% sell-on as part of the Jefte deal.
