Chemical companies to post 5-10% revenue growth in Q1 amid tariff concerns, weaker rupee

Time of India25-07-2025
ET Intelligence Group: Chemical companies are expected to post 5-10% year-on-year revenue growth for the June 2025 quarter driven by order intake ahead of potential US tariffs and a weaker rupee that boosts export realisations. Decline in the prices of raw materials will help in shielding margins.
"While the chemicals sector fundamentals remain soft, some companies should benefit from front-loading of orders by customers ahead of the threat of US tariffs, ramp-up in specific growth projects, and firm prices of HFC (Hydrofluorocarbon) refrigerants," noted Kotak Securities in a preview report.

Lower input costs will help profitability of companies. Crude oil price averaged at $67 per barrel in the June quarter, reflecting a drop of nearly 20% year-on-year and 11% quarter-on-quarter. Prices of Butadiene, Toluene, Benzene and Propylene, major raw materials, decreased 4-9% from the year ago, according to
Motilal Oswal Financial Services
. The broking firm expects operating margin before depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda margin) to expand 20 basis points (bps) on an annual basis and a sales growth of 10% for companies under its coverage.

"In the first two months of the June quarter, nine out of 13 companies within our coverage universe reported an uptick in total exports," Motilal Oswal Financial Services mentioned in a report. The rupee depreciated nearly 3% in the quarter, making export revenue appear optically higher, it added.
Refrigerant gas players are expected to report strong results, supported by favourable global prices and solid export demand. Within agrochemicals, Axis Securities expects companies with a domestic focus to perform better. "Growth in the domestic market is expected to be supported by new product launches, strong volume growth ahead of the kharif season, and healthy demand driven by a normal monsoon outlook," the broking firm said in a report.
"Most of the companies under our coverage are likely to witness a pickup in volumes, also reflected in recent export data," noted PL Capital in a report. However, it expects margins to remain under pressure for agrochemical companies due to subdued demand and weak realisations.
Chinese competition, volatile input costs, and geopolitical risks impacting logistics and demand present a complex operating environment for the chemical sector. Uncertainty surrounding long-term tariffs continues to affect company decisions. Also, overcapacity in China poses a risk of heightened pressure on pricing. Investors will be closely watching management commentary on volume sustainability, pricing power recovery, and the impact of potential tariff shifts for clear signals on the sector's trajectory beyond the quarter.

Nvidia says no 'backdoors' in chips as China questions security

Nvidia chips do not contain "backdoors" allowing remote access, the U.S. tech giant has said, after Beijing summoned company representatives to discuss "serious security issues". The California-based company is a world-leading producer of AI semiconductors, and this month became the first company to hit $4 trillion in market value. But it has become entangled in trade tensions between China and the United States, and Washington effectively restricts which chips Nvidia can export to China on national security grounds. "Cybersecurity is critically important to us. Nvidia does not have 'backdoors' in our chips that would give anyone a remote way to access or control them," Nvidia said in a statement Thursday. A key issue has been Chinese access to the "H20": a less powerful version of Nvidia's AI processing units that the company developed specifically for export to China. Nvidia said this month it would resume H20 sales to China after Washington pledged to remove licensing curbs that had halted exports. But the tech giant still faces obstacles. U.S. lawmakers have proposed plans to require Nvidia and other manufacturers of advanced AI chips to include built-in location tracking capabilities. Beijing's top internet regulator said Thursday it had summoned Nvidia representatives to discuss recently discovered "serious security issues" involving the H20. The Cyberspace Administration of China said it had asked Nvidia to "explain the security risks of vulnerabilities and backdoors in its H20 chips sold to China and submit relevant supporting materials". China is aiming to reduce reliance on foreign tech by promoting Huawei's domestically developed 910C chip as an alternative to the H20, said Jost Wubbeke of the Sinolytics consultancy. "From that perspective, the U.S. decision to allow renewed exports of the H20 to China could be seen as counterproductive, as it might tempt Chinese hyperscalers to revert to the H20, potentially undermining momentum behind the 910C and other domestic alternatives," he said. Other hurdles to Nvidia's operations in China are the sputtering economy, beset by a years-long property sector crisis, and heightened trade headwinds under U.S. President Donald Trump. CEO Jensen Huang said during a visit to Beijing this month that the company remained committed to serving local customers, adding that he had been assured during talks with top Chinese officials that the country was "open and stable".

The increased rail capacity will not only ease the burden on the existing infrastructure but will also facilitate the transportation of goods such as tea, timber and agricultural products, thus boosting the local and regional economy. This project is part of the Delhi – Guwahati High Density Network route and holds strategic importance due to its proximity to the international borders with Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal, providing vital access to these neighbouring regions. It passes through districts in Bihar (Kishanganj) and West Bengal (Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and Uttar Dinajpur), serving as a crucial link for both passenger and freight transport. The infrastructure development will include 7 stations, 99 bridges and the construction of 3 Road Over Bridges and 8 Road Under Bridges. The project aims to facilitate the movement of 21.6 million tons of additional cargo, leading to a savings of Rs 2,551 crore in logistics costs. It will also contribute significantly to fuel conservation by saving 2.14 crore litres of diesel every year. Live Events In the broader context, the Aluabari Road – New Jalpaiguri 3rd and 4th Line project is poised to not only strengthen transportation infrastructure but also act as a catalyst for economic growth, regional integration and enhanced quality of life in the Northeast. This project will enhance the overall efficiency of the transportation network across Bihar, West Bengal and the Northeast, easing congestion on this crucial corridor that serves as a vital gateway between the eastern and NE region of India.

Moderate 3% rise in global gold demand

Global gold demand increased three per cent year-on-year to 1,249 tonne during the April-June quarter of the current year, amid a high price environment, World Gold Council (WGC) said in a report on Thursday. Strong gold investment flows largely fuelled quarterly growth, as an increasingly unpredictable geopolitical environment and price momentum sustained demand, according to WGC's Q2/2025 Gold Demand Trends report. 'Gold ETF investment remained a key driver of total demand, with inflows of 170 tonnes over the quarter, compared with small outflows in Q2 2024. Asian-listed funds were major contributors at 70 tonne, keeping pace with US flows. Combined with record inflows in the first quarter, global gold ETF desmand reached 397 tonne, the highest first-half total since 2020,' the report added. Meanwhile, the total bar and coin investment also increased 11 per cent year-on-year, adding 307 tonne. Chinese investors led the way with a 44 per cent year-on-year increase to 115 tonne, while Indian investors continued to add to their holdings, totalling 46 tonne in the second quarter. Divergent trends emerged in Western markets as European net investment more than doubled to 28 tonne, while US bar and coin demand halved to 9 tonne in the second quarter. Central banks continued to buy, adding 166 tonne in the April-June quarter this year, led by Poland, Turkey and Azerbaijan. Despite this deceleration, central bank buying remained at significantly elevated levels due to ongoing economic and geopolitical uncertainty. 'Our annual central bank survey shows that 95 per cent of reserve managers believe that global central bank gold reserves will increase over the next 12 months,' the report said. Jewellery demand continued to decline, with the volume of consumption down 14 per cent and nearing low levels last seen in 2020 during the Covid pandemic. Jewellery demand in China was down 20 per cent, and Indian demand fell 17 per cent year-on-year. However, in value terms, the global jewellery market increased to a total of $36 billion. 'The overall jewellery has dropped to 341 tonnes but increased in value to about $36 billion, which is interesting. From a Chinese demand perspective, it's down 20 per cent in terms of volume. In by 17 per cent in terms of volume. But again, in terms of value, it's significantly higher than last year,' Sachin Jain, WGC Regional CEO - India, told PTI. Further, the report revealed that the total gold supply increased 3 per cent to 1,249 tonnes, with mine production up marginally to a new second quarter record. Recycling increased 4 per cent year-on-year but stayed relatively subdued considering the high price environment. 'Global markets have navigated a volatile start to the year marked by trade tensions, unpredictable US policy shifts and frequent geopolitical flashpoints.
