Séamus Power stays in contention at John Deere Classic

RTÉ News06-07-2025
Séamus Power remains in contention among the chasing pack at the John Deere Classic after a third-round 68 kept him within three shots of the lead.
The Waterford man had been within three strokes of Doug Ghim after the halfway stage on Friday but with defending champion Davis Thompson now assuming the summit following his 67 on Saturday, Power remains within sight of the new leader by the same margin going into Sunday's final round in Illinois.
Power's front nine on Saturday was a mixed bag as he started to build momentum with back-to-back birdies on five and six. But he followed that up with bogeys on seven and nine.
However, he found form on the back nine, with another set of back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12 before finishing with a flourish on the 18th.
That leaves Power on 12 under in a four-way tie for sixth going into Sunday's tournament climax at the TPC Deere Run course.
Meanwhile, defending champion Thompson established a one-shot lead after his four-under 67 took him to 15 under for the week in Illinois, one ahead of fellow Americans Brian Campbell, Max Homa and David Lipsky, as well as Argentina's Emiliano Grillo. Ghim dropped back to nine under and a tie for 21st after a 74.
Homa, who has dropped from the top 10 to 99th in the world rankings over the last year and recently found himself carrying his own bag during US Open qualifying, was pleased to be back in contention.
"Golf is just been very boring for me this year," he said in quotes on pgatour.com.
"I haven't had a whole lot of stress, and you want to be stressed out.
"So I look forward to the butterflies in the morning; I look forward to the first tee shot.
"It's just nice to get to feel that again. It's been a while."

How loaded Liverpool can afford mammoth summer spending spree – and STILL break British transfer record on Isak

MONEY talks and Alexander Isak is listening hard to Liverpool. And regardless of the Reds' summer spending spree, there is still cash to splash to get the Swedish star out of 7 Liverpool are ready to make a record bid for Alexander Isak despite their mammoth spending spree Credit: Getty 7 The Reds have already splashed out on fellow striker Hugo Ekitike Credit: Reuters This week saw That includes the mammoth £100m acquisition of Bundesliga 'wunderkind' Florian Wirtz. Boss Arne Slot's splurge is already spectacular but it is threatening to turn eye-watering. READ MORE IN FOOTBALL For Liverpool are rolling in it, with the greatest purchasing power in the club's history right now, ready to break all financial barriers to create a team to strike terror into the hearts of not only their domestic rivals but throughout those in Europe. FSG and principal owner John W Henry always tend to quietly go about their business, their purchases are usually secured early before the annual spending spree turns desperate towards the end of transfer windows when huge fees are bumped up. But this time they might as well be shouting from the rooftop alongside the Liver Birds high above the banks of the River Mersey. Thanks to the Americans' superbly-run financial ship — and a brilliant transfer strategy hatched by Michael Edwards, who returned to the club 16 months ago as CEO of football — they can now outbid any rival. Most read in Football BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS Their former sporting director went back while Liverpool were still wondering who to appoint as Jurgen Klopp's replacement, and he has overseen a stunning operation that has given the club money to burn. Last summer, only £10m was spent on Federico Chiesa as Klopp's successor Slot decided, alongside Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes, to stick and not twist with the squad the German left behind. But they did bring in an initial £47.5m in sales. Newcastle contract blunder could cost them Isak 7 Liverpool casually dropped £100m on Florian Wirtz Credit: Reuters 7 Luis Diaz will raise plenty of funds if he joins Bayern Munich Credit: Alamy This year, astute dealing meant Liverpool even got £8m out of Real Madrid for letting free agent Trent Alexander-Arnold leave a month early to play in the Club World Cup, while £50m has since been raised by the sales of Caiomhin Kelleher, Nat Phillips and Jarell Quansah. There is also huge money about to go in the bank for those Slot is now dispensing with — Uruguayan flop striker Darwin Nunez could bring in around £55m, midfielder Harvey Elliott is linked with a £30m switch to West Ham, and full-backs Kostas Tsimikas or Andy Robertson will go for £15m. Slot does not want to see Luis Diaz leave but the Colombian attacker has made it clear he is after a new, bigger and longer contract elsewhere and is unhappy no one has talked to him about extending his current deal which has two years to run. Bayern Munich are certain to return after a failed bid of £58m but another £7m will see him out of the door to the Bundesliga. 7 7 Add that little lot up and you can take a £180m chunk out of all the money required to bring in Ekitike, midfielder Wirtz, wing-back Jeremie Frimpong and left-back Milos Kerkez — meaning a potential net spend of a far less eye-watering £90m. Last season's gamble of trusting the same squad Klopp had, bar Chiesa, also brought in £174.9m in Prem title–winning prize money. And Champions League football means even more cash for Liverpool. Not to forget that since FSG finished enlarging Anfield to accommodate 61,000-plus fans, a cool £3.12m for every home game is guaranteed. And the Reds are only £40m into the allowed £105m of losses allowed in a three-year cycle. Signing Isak — even at over £120m — will not really create sleepless nights for Anfield chiefs, nor is there the impression that failing to get full value for Diaz or Nunez is going to trouble them that much. Anyway, with the South American pair on the way out another top striker is needed — something that would not have been the case but for the tragic death of Diogo Jota this month. Life moves in mysterious ways. But there is no mystery as to why Isak has told Newcastle he wants to explore a move away — or why Liverpool can bust the British transfer record. And the Magpies are listening to him, too. 7

Adam Svensson scorches to 60 at 3M Open; Séamus Power seven back

Séamus Power carded an opening 67 at the 3M Open, but is seven shots behind leader Adam Svensson, who posted an impressive round of 60. Canadian Swensson had already nine birdies on his card before an eagle at the last moved him to 11 under at TPC Twin Cities. He is two shots clear of American Sam Stephens, with compatriot Chad Ramey a further shot back on eight under. Ricky Fowler is among a group of four players tied for fifth on six-under par.

‘One of the most astonishing PR moves in tennis history' – Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner slammed for coach decision

JANNIK SINNER has rehired the fitness coach that played a key role in his failed drugs tests last year. Naldi is then said to have contaminated Sinner with the substance while massaging his feet. The world No1 was not initially suspended, and in August last year an International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) tribunal determined that he bore "no fault or negligence" for the contamination. Following the decision, Sinner axed both Ferrara and Naldi and went on to win the US Open and Australian Open. READ MORE IN SPORT The Italian went on to hire Novak Djokovic's former fitness team Marco Panichi and Ulises Badio - but parted with both prior to his Wimbledon triumph. Sinner has since filled the vacancy by turning back to Ferrara, in a decision that has raised eyebrows among the tennis community. Former doubles Grand Slam champion Paul McNamee wrote on X: "Jannik Sinner rehiring Umberta Ferrara has to be up there as one of the most astonishing PR moves in tennis history. You can afford to hire anyone in the world. Why oh why Jannik?" Sinner eventually served a three-month ban after this year's Australian Open following the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) decision to appeal the ITIA's previous verdict to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Most read in Tennis BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Prior to the appeal reaching a courtroom, an agreement was reached between WADA and Sinner for the reigning No1 to serve a three-month ban - which enabled him to return in time for his home tournament in Rome, Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Upon axing Ferrara and Naldi last August, Sinner said: "I'm not feeling that confident to continue with them." Carlos Alcaraz vs Jannik Sinner interrupted as umpire forced to make 'most Wimbledon announcement ever' Since then, Ferrara appeared to attempt to shift the blame towards Naldi during an interview with Italian outlet Sinner's fitness coach said: "I very clearly communicated to Naldi both the nature of the product, and the fact that it must not come into contact with Jannik for any reason." He then went onto add: "I suggested that he use it because he had a cut on his finger that wasn't healing and was affecting his work. I only allowed it to be used in my personal bathroom. "Naldi did not deny being told about it, but he said he did not remember." Confirming Ferrara's return to the team, a Sinner statement read: "Jannik Sinner has reappointed Umberto Ferrara as his fitness coach with immediate effect. "The decision has been made in alignment with Jannik's management team as part of ongoing preparations for upcoming tournaments, including the Cincinnati Open and U.S. Open. 'Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level.' Sinner has withdrawn from next week's Masters 1000 event in Canada. The Wimbledon champion is next scheduled to appear in Cincinnati, before his US Open title defence begins next month. 3 Physio Giacomo Naldi, left, and Ferrara, middle, were axed from the team last August Credit: Getty
