'Perplexed': What EAM Jaishankar said on Russian oil purchase amid Trump's tariffs; 'India not biggest purchaser'
NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said that India was not the biggest importer of Russian oil and expressed that he was "perplexed" as New Delhi's purchase of oil from the US had in fact increased. The statements came in as Donald Trump has been putting pressure on India to stop buying oil from Moscow, claiming that the move was fueling Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Speaking at bilateral meet with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow, Jaishankar said, "We are not the biggest purchasers of Russian oil, that is China. We are not the biggest purchasers of LNG, that is the European Union. We are not the country which has the biggest trade surge with Russia after 2022; I think there are some countries to the South." "We are a country where the Americans have said for the last few years that we should do everything to stabilise the world energy market, including buying oil from Russia. Incidentally, we also buy oil from the US, and that amount has increased. So honestly, we are very perplexed at the logic of the argument that you had referred to," he added. Trump imposed additional 25% tariffs on India over its continued purchase of Russian oil. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bawshar: You Could Earn Another Income With Companies Like Aramco TradeLG Undo India has repeatedly defended its move as something driven by "market conditions". Moreover, the two leaders reaffirmed India-Russia ties amid US tariff pressure. Jaishankar noted that the two nations had been the "steadiest of the major relationships in the world after the Second World War." Jaishankar also took up the issue of Indians serving in the Russian army and urged for speedy resolution of the pending cases. "I took up the issue of Indians serving in the Russian Army. While many have been released, there are still some pending cases, with some missing persons. We hope that the Russian side will expediously resolve this," he said. The two nations also reaffirmed the commitment to expand India's exports to Russia and address the "non-tariff barriers and regulatory impediments". "We reaffirmed our shared ambition to expand bilateral trade in a balanced and sustainable manner, including by increasing India's exports to Russia. This requires swiftly addressing non-tariff barriers and regulatory impediments, enhancing India's exports to Russia in sectors like agriculture, pharma, and textiles will certainly help correct the imbalance," Jaishankar said. On Ukraine, Jaishankar reiterated India's position of peace and said, "On regional issues, we discussed developments in Ukraine, West Asia, the Middle East and Afghanistan. India's approach continues to emphasise dialogue and diplomacy as essential to resolving differences."

Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) cracks down on illegal land plotters; takes action against unauthorised colonisers
VARANASI: To curb illegal land plotting in the city, the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) is preparing a list of individuals and organisations involved in such activities, with special focus on listed colonisers. Authorities said that in various areas under the Varanasi development region, multiple landowners, developers, and colonisers are illegally dividing land into small plots and selling them to the public without layout map approval from the VDA, violating Section 14 of the Uttar Pradesh Urban Planning and Development Act. The VDA stated that these colonisers carry out irregular planning and development without following the master plan's land use rules and minimum plot sizes. They often fail to provide basic infrastructure facilities such as sewers, drinking water, roads, electricity, parks, and green spaces. Illegal plotting also damages agricultural land and natural habitats. Buyers of these unauthorised plots risk financial losses due to legal actions such as demolitions. The VDA's enforcement unit regularly follows legal procedures to carry out demolitions and take action against landowners, developers, and colonisers involved in illegal plotting. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Officials noted that these individuals often operate like land mafias in specific areas. Vice Chairman Pulkit Garg instructed all zonal officers to identify and compile details of illegal colonisers, including their organisations and contact information, in their respective wards. The list will be used to ensure proper legal action is taken against those dividing land illegally and deceiving the public. It will be updated bi-weekly and regularly reviewed by VDA officials. Rupee slips as oil importers step up dollar purchases
The Indian rupee fell on Thursday as aggressive dollar buying by oil importers towards the end of the session pressured the local currency even as persistent greenback sales by foreign banks helped offset some of the losses. The Asian currency closed 0.24% lower at 87.2700 per U.S. dollar on Thursday against its previous close of 87.0650. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Url Test Change Title Tabbola Undo "There were some debt inflows which had masked the impact, but with that done, we saw the impact of dollar bids," a trader with a brokerage said. Meanwhile, foreign banks were on the offer side in the dollar/rupee pair again for most part of the session on Thursday, extending the pattern seen over the past two days - a move that has puzzled traders. The persistent selling by foreign banks coupled with the Indian government's proposed tax cuts and U.S. President Donald Trump 's talks with Russian and Ukrainian Presidents helped the rupee move higher than 87 for the first time this month on Tuesday. Live Events However, the upcoming August 27 deadline for the implementation of additional 25% U.S. tariffs on Indian goods is expected to pose a fresh threat to the rupee. "The expectation is that the rupee will be on the weaker side till September," said Dilip Parmar, currency analyst at HDFC Securities. Earlier this week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's accusations of India profiteering from purchases of Russian oil during the Ukraine war further hurt the rupee. Also closely watched will be U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole symposium on Friday, in which market participants will look for clues on interest rate trajectory in the world's largest economy. Asian currencies traded mixed on Thursday while dollar index was flat at 98.238 as of 1536 IST.
