Adrian Mardell retires as JLR CEO amid leadership shift and uncertain future

The Sun17 hours ago
ADRIAN MARDELL, the executive responsible for rebranding Jaguar Land Rover into the streamlined identity now known as JLR, is stepping down from his position as Chief Executive Officer. After more than three decades with the company, Mardell's retirement arrives at a pivotal moment for the British automaker as it faces a landscape marked by shifting market demands, delayed product launches, and strategic uncertainty.
Mardell's career with JLR began in 1990, and he rose steadily through the ranks to become Chief Financial Officer in 2018. He assumed the role of CEO in 2023 following the resignation of Thierry Bolloré. Over his two-year tenure at the helm, Mardell oversaw a significant restructuring of the company, repositioning its three core nameplates, Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery, as standalone brands within the JLR portfolio.
This strategic pivot brought renewed profitability to the business following a period of instability exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, Mardell's departure now leaves a leadership vacuum at a time when JLR faces a series of pressing challenges. A successor has yet to be named.
Jaguar, in particular, stands at a crossroads. The brand is undergoing a dramatic reinvention as a manufacturer of ultra-premium electric vehicles, following the discontinuation of all prior models. Its upcoming all-electric lineup, priced well above $100,000, aims to reposition Jaguar as a rival to the most exclusive EV offerings. Yet the brand's relaunch campaign last year failed to resonate, drawing widespread criticism and casting doubt on its ability to secure a stable foothold in a luxury EV market that appears increasingly resistant to high-end electrified vehicles.
Land Rover, on the other hand, has continued to perform well, with the Range Rover and Defender models maintaining strong sales and profitability. Nevertheless, the momentum may be tested. Range Rover's first foray into electric mobility – its debut EV – has already been delayed until 2026, reportedly due to a tepid response from the market.
Complicating matters further are international trade barriers. The United States imposes a 10 per cent duty on up to 100,000 UK-manufactured vehicles imported annually, a relatively modest rate compared to tariffs faced by other nations. However, the Defender and Discovery models are produced in Slovakia, subjecting them to a 15% tariff when exported to the US. This differential could impact pricing competitiveness and overall profitability in JLR's key overseas markets.
While Mardell exits having stabilised the company and initiated a bold rebranding strategy, the challenges ahead remain formidable. JLR must now contend with the broader pressures faced by the global automotive industry, chief among them the uncertain trajectory of electric vehicle adoption, while navigating its own internal transitions.
The identity of the next CEO will likely determine how well JLR weathers these mounting complexities. Whoever takes over will inherit both a restructured company and a heavy portfolio of unresolved questions.

Klang Valley to remain mainstay of industrial hubs

Knight Frank Malaysia said that between 2020 and 2024, annual industrial transaction values in the Klang Valley and Johor Baru grew by an 18% and 40% four-year compounded annual growth rate, respectively. PETALING JAYA: Klang Valley will likely remain the largest industrial hub in the country on the back of its relatively more mature industrial parks, infrastructure and strategic access to ports, according to Kenanga Research. Specifically on Johor, the research house gathered that its industrial and data centre boom commenced with the launch of YTL Green Data Centre Park in Kulai in August 2022. This kick-started interests by large multinationals in the state, further fuelling its investments into that space, it noted. The research house said with the officiation of Johor's Forest City Special Financial Zone in September 2024 and Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone in January 2025, in addition to the increase in cross-border activities with Singapore stemming from the upcoming launch of the Rapid Transit System link, it believes that activities and investments into the state could remain buoyant in the near-to-medium term. According to property consultancy company Knight Frank Malaysia, between 2020 and 2024, annual industrial transaction values in Klang Valley and Johor Baru (including Kulai) grew by an 18% and 40% four-year compounded annual growth rate, respectively. While this could be attributed to pent-up demand coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic, it ties in with the increase of capital investments injected into the mentioned regions, Kenanga Research said. Kenanga Research believes Penang remains a hot spot for industrial activity, mostly dominated by the technology and semiconductor sectors. The brokerage recently co-organised a real estate event with Knight Frank on the property consultancy's exclusive launch of its half-yearly real estate highlights for the first half of 2025. Focusing on high-rise residential trends, Knight Frank highlighted that transaction volumes and values in Kuala Lumpur had picked up mostly in 2022, coming out of the pandemic. Knight Frank found it worth noting as well that the growth of average transaction values had outpaced volumes, reflecting a higher appetite by homebuyers for higher-priced homes. From Kenanga Research's checks among property developers and mortgage lenders, the pick-up in transaction volumes in 2022 could have been made up by more affordable offerings (RM300,000 to RM500,000) which led market launches at that time, owing to development being stalled by the movement control orders between 2020 and 2021. On the data centre front, there was a surge in data centre investments post-Covid-19, with total investment reaching RM160bil in 2024, more than triple the amount in 2023. However, the sector is now entering a more mature execution phase of announced plans, Knight Frank noted. In the first half of 2025, digital investments totalled RM42.6bil versus RM66.2bil in the similar period last year, with over 70% allocated to data centres and cloud infrastructure. While Johor continues to lead in data centre development, Klang Valley has also seen healthy activity.

Nunez nears Al Hilal switch as Liverpool prepare Isak bid

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is reportedly closing in on a move to Saudi club Al Hilal, which could allow the Premier League champions to make a fresh bid for Newcastle's Alexander Isak. Nunez joined the Reds for an initial 75 million euros (US$87 million, £65 million) from Benfica three years ago but has failed to live up to that price tag. The Uruguayan has scored 40 goals in 143 appearances but slipped down the pecking order at Anfield under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Al Hilal will pay an initial 53 million euros for the 26-year-old. Nunez was likely to play even less this season after Liverpool signed Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz as part of a 300 million euro spending spree that also includes full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. However, the club could still break the British transfer record by signing Isak, with Newcastle reportedly demanding a fee of up to £150 million for the Swedish striker. The sale of Nunez would take Liverpool's income for transfer sales this window to nearly 200 million euros after the departures of Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tyler Morton. Harvey Elliott is also attracting interest from RB Leipzig, with Liverpool wanting at least 45 million euros for the England midfielder. Nunez would become the latest big name to join Al Hilal, who shocked Manchester City to reach the quarter-finals of the recent Club World Cup. Coached by former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, the Saudi club's squad includes Portuguese internationals Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo, Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly and former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.--AFP

Liverpool's Nunez nears Al Hilal move as Isak bid looms

LIVERPOOL forward Darwin Nunez is reportedly close to sealing a transfer to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, with the deal potentially facilitating the Reds' push for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak. Signed for 75 million euros in 2022, Nunez has struggled for consistency, scoring 40 goals in 143 appearances across three seasons. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports Al Hilal will pay an initial 53 million euros for the 26-year-old Uruguayan. His playing time was expected to drop following the arrivals of Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. The sale could raise Liverpool's total transfer earnings this window to nearly 200 million euros, following the exits of Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Newcastle are said to value Isak at 150 million pounds, which would break the British transfer record. Harvey Elliott has also attracted interest from RB Leipzig, though Liverpool are holding out for 45 million euros. If completed, Nunez would join a high-profile Al Hilal squad that includes Ruben Neves, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Aleksandar Mitrovic. The club recently reached the Club World Cup quarter-finals under Simone Inzaghi. – AFP
