Liverpool's Nunez nears Al Hilal move as Isak bid looms

The Sun2 days ago
LIVERPOOL forward Darwin Nunez is reportedly close to sealing a transfer to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, with the deal potentially facilitating the Reds' push for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.
Signed for 75 million euros in 2022, Nunez has struggled for consistency, scoring 40 goals in 143 appearances across three seasons.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports Al Hilal will pay an initial 53 million euros for the 26-year-old Uruguayan.
His playing time was expected to drop following the arrivals of Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz.
The sale could raise Liverpool's total transfer earnings this window to nearly 200 million euros, following the exits of Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Newcastle are said to value Isak at 150 million pounds, which would break the British transfer record.
Harvey Elliott has also attracted interest from RB Leipzig, though Liverpool are holding out for 45 million euros.
If completed, Nunez would join a high-profile Al Hilal squad that includes Ruben Neves, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Aleksandar Mitrovic.
The club recently reached the Club World Cup quarter-finals under Simone Inzaghi. – AFP

Liverpool manager Slot refuses to rule out fresh Isak bid with Nunez set for Al Hilal

LONDON, Aug 8— Liverpool manager Arne Slot refused to rule out an improved bid for Newcastle's Alexander Isak as the Premier League champions consider adding to their formidable firepower, with Darwin Nunez set to leave for Saudi Arabia. After a quiet first year in the transfer market under Slot the Reds have spent almost £300 million (US$402 million) on forwards Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike as well as full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. Nunez is one of a number of significant exits that will help recoup much of that outlay as the Uruguayan closes in on a £46 million move to Al Hilal. Liverpool reportedly had a £110 million bid for Isak turned down by Newcastle, who are seeking a British transfer record fee. The Swedish striker has not been part of the Magpies' pre-season preparations and has been told to train on his own by Newcastle. 'You never talk about players that are not yours,' Slot said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday's Community Shield against Crystal Palace at Wembley, the traditional curtain-raiser for the season. 'I think we have a lot of attacking power in our team. When I think about Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike, Mo Salah, Jeremie Frimpong, who can play as a right-winger, Florian Wirtz, who can play as a left-winger, -- I already feel I have a lot of attacking options in my current squad. 'But, as always as a club, we are always looking at the chances in the market.' Liverpool celebrated a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title but were devastated last month by the death of forward Diogo Jota. The Portuguese international was killed in a car accident alongside his brother in northern Spain as he began to make his way back to England for pre-season. A series of tributes have been paid to Jota at every Liverpool game since and will continue throughout the season. A 'Forever 20' emblem, referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number, will be printed on Liverpool's shirts this season, while a permanent memorial will be installed at Anfield. 'First of all, tragedy impacted us but it impacted far more his wife, children and parents,' said Slot. 'But it impacted us as well, definitely. The tributes that have been done since were all very emotional and impressive, every time we were somewhere. 'It started off in Preston and in Asia as well. It's been emotional, but impressive as well.' — AFP

Soccer-Former City boss Taylor named head coach of Liverpool women

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) -Gareth Taylor has been appointed head coach of Liverpool's women's team, the club announced on Friday, five months after being sacked by Manchester City. The 52-year-old coached City for five years, leading them to FA Cup and League Cup triumphs, and a narrow second-place finish to Chelsea in the Women's Super League in 2024 that was decided by goal difference. But he was fired by City in March, just five days before their League Cup final against Chelsea, with the club citing the team's underperformance. City went on to finish fourth in the WSL this past season while Liverpool were seventh. "Everyone in football knows about the history, size and potential of (Liverpool), and I am really looking forward to the task ahead," Taylor said. "Our aim is to create a team that supporters can be proud of, which plays good football and which will hopefully bring success along the way." Andy O'Boyle, managing director of Liverpool's women's programme, hailed the appointment, saying Taylor "has a proven track record of building successful, identity-driven teams and his ability to develop players and help them reach the next level is second to none." Taylor will take charge of Saturday's closed-door friendly against Aston Villa at Bodymoor Heath. The WSL season kicks off on September 6. (Reporting by Lori Ewing; Editing by Andrew Cawthorne)

Ringgit continues to retreat against greenback on profit-taking after recent gains

KUALA LUMPUR — The ringgit continued its retreat against the US dollar on profit-taking after recent gains to close lower on Friday. At 6 pm, the local note eased to 4.2420/2480 against the greenback from Thursday's close of 4.2340/2385. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said mixed signals from the US Federal Reserve (Fed) have also affected market sentiment, amid growing expectations for an interest rate cut. He noted that Fed officials remained divided on the timing and necessity for such a move. 'Some believe inflation could remain persistent, justifying the need to maintain a restrictive monetary policy. Others, however, feel that a rate cut should happen sooner to stabilise growth momentum,' he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam also pointed out that the upcoming release of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for July, scheduled for next Tuesday, is likely to intensify the debate among Fed members over the direction of interest rates. 'The consensus estimates have pegged the inflation rate at 2.8 per cent, which is higher than 2.7 per cent in the prior month. As such, we will continue to see debate among Fed members on the direction of interest rates,' he said. At the close, the ringgit ended mostly higher against major currencies. It edged up against the yen to 2.8720/8763 from 2.8732/8765 at the close on Thursday, and improved against the euro to 4.9381/9451 from 4.9411/9463. However, it dropped versus the British pound to 5.7034/7114 from 5.6596/6656. The ringgit trended lower against regional peers. It dropped against the Singapore dollar to 3.3014/3064 from 3.2973/3013, declined against the Thai baht to 13.1173/1419 from 13.0954/1146, and was lower against the Indonesian rupiah at 260.3/260.8 from 259.9/260.3 previously. It slipped against the Philippine peso to 7.43/7.44 from 7.42/7.44. — BERNAMA
