Heroic 4,000km relay concludes at Wembley Stadium having successfully inspired almost 20,000 fans to start learning lifesaving CPR

Daily Mail24-04-2025
The Sky Bet 'Every Minute Matters' campaign culminated at the home of English football on Monday following 28 days of almost non-stop walking, running and cycling.
The unique relay – which covered an incredible 4,000km over 28 days – set out to unite the football community behind the vital mission to save more lives by equipping football fans with confidence and skills to perform lifesaving CPR.
Backed by a host of football's biggest names – including Glenn Hoddle, 'Big' Sam Allardyce and Graeme Souness – the relay struck a chord with football fans across the country spurring an incredible 24,230 to start learning CPR in just four weeks.
Cardiac arrest survivor and Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer who has played an integral role in the campaign, said: 'It's been a rollercoaster few weeks and an incredible effort from so many determined former players, fans and employees of EFL clubs.
'My message to them and all the fans who gave up just 15 minutes of their time to learn CPR is, thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
'They say football is a results business. Well, this is just about the best result I could have ever hoped for.
'In just four weeks we've seen thousands of fans give up their time to learn CPR. I've been supporting this campaign every step of the way and what has been achieved over the past year is nothing short of remarkable. It's a true testament to the power of football.'
Legendary former Liverpool player and manager Graeme Souness, who participated in the final leg of the relay form QPR to Wembley Monday, said it had been a truly humbling experience to be part of this campaign.
'What the Sky Bet Relay has shown once again is that football can bring people together in a way that few things in life can,' he said.
'We called on football fans to give just 15 minutes of their time and they answered us in their thousands and for that I'll be forever grateful because CPR is a vital skill that saves lives.'
The culmination of the relay comes almost a year after Sky Bet teamed up with the British Heart Foundation to launch 'Every Minute Matters' with the goal of encouraging an incredible 270,000 to start learning CPR by the end of the 2024-2025 football season – equivalent to three Wembley stadiums. Sky Bet separately pledged £3 million to fund the vital work of the British Heart Foundation.
And with a month to go to the end of the season, the British Heart Foundation confirmed today that the campaign has encouraged 288,885 people to use the charity's online RevivR tool and to start learning the lifesaving skill of CPR.
Having smashed the original target of 270,000, the year-long Every Minute Matters campaign, is setting its sights on a revised target of 360,000 people committing to learn CPR by the end of the Sky Bet League Two Play-Off final on Monday, May 26.
Comedian and lifelong Leeds United fan, Maisie Adams, who participated in the final leg of the relay, spoke to the importance of the campaign.
'It's been an incredible 24 hours – it's hard to say what I'm more chuffed about Leeds United getting promoted or knowing that I've played a small part in something that's frankly more important than football, she said. 'Something that can and will save lives.'
'Having smashed through the original target, we've got one last job to do and that's make sure we reach that perfect number and no I'm not talking about Leeds getting to 100 points – although that would be nice – I'm talking about getting 360,000 people to start learning CPR.'
Fans can show their support by learning CPR in just 15 minutes with the help of the BHF's free, simple and easy to use online tool, RevivR.
Each month more than 2,500 people suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK and tragically less than one in 10 survive, often because those around them don't have the confidence to perform CPR. Every minute that passes reduces the chances of survival by up to 10 percent.

Boss Enzo Maresca has a squad that would be the envy of most teams. The difficulty is overtaking the three other outstanding sides, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City. Maresca played down talk of the title when his side closed to within a few points of the Reds last year. But he will find it harder to shake off the expectations of fans and owners in his second season. Chelsea's array of attacking talent is incredible. And, in Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, they have two world-class midfielders. Defeating PSG in the CWC final was a positive sign. Gary Neville names two Man Utd transfer targets to solve 'most difficult position'

Gary Neville has identified the position that Manchester United must strengthen in the transfer window for Ruben Amorim's team to be successful this season Gary Neville has warned Manchester United that they risk missing out on European football unless they sign a new goalkeeper. The pundit believes that Ruben Amorim must upgrade on Andre Onana in the final weeks of the transfer window. The Red Devils have been busy in the transfer market, with Benjamin Sesko joining the ranks and potentially forming part of a new-look front three under Amorim. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who netted a combined 35 league goals for Wolves and Brentford last season, have also arrived at Old Trafford. United are eyeing a move for Brighton's highly-rated midfielder Carlos Baleba as they look to bolster another area of their squad. However, Neville insists that without a new number one - amid links to PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma - United could fall short of their ambitions. "You've got to get a goalkeeper. If you've got a goalkeeper and a midfield player, I think fifth or sixth will be achievable," Neville stated on the Stick to Football podcast. "I think without a goalkeeper, it's eighth or ninth. "That is the number one most difficult position in English football, Manchester United goalkeeper. I think it's the most scrutiny that anybody comes under." As for potential replacements for current first-choice Andre Onana, Neville suggested: "Donnarumma or [Emi] Martinez. When they said about Martinez from Villa earlier in the season, I wanted him. His personality. He's got guts. He's got that presence." Martinez appeared poised to depart Villa this summer following tearful scenes towards the end of last season at Villa Park, but he seems to be remaining with Unai Emery's squad. Meanwhile, Onana has endured substantial scrutiny since joining United as David De Gea's replacement in 2023, though he has won the FA Cup and reached the Europa League final during his time at the club. Donnarumma has surfaced as a potential target for United late in the transfer window following his recent dispute with PSG. The Italian shot-stopper was omitted from the club's UEFA Super Cup triumph over Tottenham Hotspur and the 26-year-old posted what appeared to be a goodbye message to PSG supporters on social media. "From the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain," he wrote. "Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success. I am disappointed and disheartened. "I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done. If that doesn't happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it." Donnarumma is in the final year of his deal and has yet to pen fresh terms, leading PSG to snap up Lille shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier during the transfer window. However, United's cross-city rivals Manchester City could possibly make a move for Donnarumma, despite welcoming James Trafford back to provide competition for Ederson. PSG's choice to axe Donnarumma from their Super Cup squad suggests the keeper is set to depart the French giants. When asked about his client's future, Donnarumma's agent Enzo Raiola didn't dismiss the prospect of a switch to England. "Gigio is very disappointed, I'm shocked, I didn't expect this from PSG," Raiola said, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport. "We've had so many seasons of respect and success, a castle of four years has collapsed in ten days. "The situation went on for a long time because PSG had offered lower terms in the spring, which Gigio had accepted out of respect for the club and the fans. However, in March-April, once we had decided to move forward together, the club changed the rules again. So we preferred to talk about it again after the Champions League final. "We spoke again after the [Club] World Cup, they confirmed the situation, and I replied that Gigio would respect his contract but would not renew. Then, in the last ten days, PSG changed everything again. It's a lack of respect, beyond the technical decisions the coach talks about, and in the coming days we will also discuss with my lawyers how to address the situation. "We will consider solutions now, maybe in the Premier League there will be clubs able to pay what's needed. Paris Saint-Germain are asking for big money. They talk about respect, but it's only about the money."

Why Gianluigi Donnarumma will struggle to get ANY Premier League transfer, despite showing up English clubs in Europe

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA has this habit of playing brilliantly against English clubs. So it might seem a bit weird that even though the Italian goalkeeper is dreaming of a big-money move to the Premier League from PSG, he might end up being left high and dry in the French capital. Donnarumma broke England's hearts in the Euro 2020 final penalty shoot-out at Wembley by saving Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka's spot-kicks. In the Champions League last season, he continued his spell over England as he was outstanding against Aston Villa, Arsenal and Liverpool. This was a huge reason why PSG ended up winning the competition for the first time in their history. A player with just 12 months left on his contract, that has not stopped him from being dumped by PSG boss Luis Enrique for new arrival Lucas Chevalier. Donnarumma knows he is now toast at PSG. And he would love to play in England but the problem is that despite his fine reputation, he could still struggle to find a Premier League club. The player's agent, Enzo Raiola said: 'It's true, the Premier League is very intriguing to us. I saw that many of my clients who play in the Premier League think it is the best step, being the most competitive league in the world. 'As of today, I have not received even the slightest hint from Italy that clubs could start negotiations for Gigio in this window. I won't exclude anything for the future, but so far no Italian clubs have stepped forward. 'On a purely financial level, nobody has the means to take a step towards Donnarumma.' Intriguingly, the only English club to express an interest so far are Manchester City although there have not been concrete talks. This is despite the fact that Ederson, Stefan Ortega and the newly returned James Trafford are already at the club. Donnarumma makes some spectacular saves in big moments but equally, he is not great with the ball at his feet which is one reason why PSG manager Enrique has bombed him at PSG. And let's not forget that Donnarumma is not even that good at dealing with crosses. People might say he is the best keeper in the world but he really is not. He is decent, but Alisson at Liverpool and Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois are better. 11 11 Donnarumma helped PSG to the Champions League title last term Credit: AP 11 Liverpool are sorted for goalkeepers with Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili Credit: Getty 11 Man United have Andre Onana who would need to leave first Credit: Getty Maybe if City sell Ederson, Donnarumma might have a chance of playing in England but this looks unlikely. So, elsewhere, what are his other options? Manchester United do not want to sign him, although even if they did, Ruben Amorim would have to move on Andre Onana first. And those huge Donnarumma wages would be a problem. Chelsea are not looking for a keeper. Neither are Arsenal, who are happy with David Raya. Liverpool have Alisson while new keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has arrived from Valencia, having been bought a year ago. Newcastle have signed Aaron Ramsdale to compete with Nick Pope while Spurs are happy with Guglielmo Vicario. So, maybe Donnarumma could take the money and head off to Saudi Arabia but it would not be ideal for Italy that their team captain would be playing in the Middle East ahead of a World Cup. Although he will not sign a fresh deal at PSG, maybe he could still return to the side. This seems unlikely but his replacement, Chavalier, hardly covered himself in glory in the Uefa Super Cup against Spurs in Udine on Wednesday. Donnarumma is only 26 so maybe he will still get that dream move to the Premier League but right now, it looks as though it is unlikely to be this summer. 11 Donnarumma was Italy's penalty shootout hero against England in Euro 2020 Credit: AP 11 Lucas Chevalier has taken Donnarumma's spot at PSG Credit: Getty 11 Chelsea are happy with their stockpile of goalkeepers Credit: Alamy 11 Ruben Amorim may be left with his current options Credit: Getty
